Henri LLoyd is pretty badass, but if you get anything, try to be sure it's not too sportswear-y, they *are* a sailing company.

Their shoes are okay, nothing to stare at, but that pair of high boots is pretty cool.

Actually I can't see LB's socks anywhere.

So I've got a formal event coming up and I bought a sports coat for it. I'll also be using it for a few years to wear to the various interviews I'll be having. A suit would be ideal, but I don't exactly have the money for one. But I bought a plain black sports coat that fits very well, and now I'm trying to decide what to wear it with. I was thinking of having a white shirt, dark gray slacks, and possibly a gray or blue tie. I've still got a few weeks left to decide, which is nice.

 

What would you guys wear with a black sports coat to a formal event?

A black blazer I assume? Or an actual sports coat? And how formal is this?

Yes, it depends on just how formal.

Sportscoats have a looser fit, than blazers, and are made out of slightly heavier materials and are slightly longer. Am I right?

 

Also, i'd probably wear the blue tie.

That being said, i've only ever seen a white tux been done well once.

Remember, white is bigger. If you go with a white tux (very daring), make sure it fits properly. Same with the black tux, but black will always look slimmer. I'd go with a black tux with something a little special. A satin shawl collar for example. Don't look like an attention [bleep].

Shiny, sports coats were originally meant for hunting. They're made of tweed, corduroy, etc. They may have elbow patches. They're not formal.

The semantics of menswear is far too ambiguous these days :( By sports coat I guess I really meant suit jacket, one that looks similar to this one.

 

In regards to the formality, I suppose if you could pick one outfit to go with a black suit coat/blazer/sports coat/jacket/expensive piece of cloth that looks similar to the one above for various interviews for jobs or schools or semi-formal to formal occasions that would happen to pop up in which a full suit might not be ideal, what would you pick?
