I'll be honest, I went there the other day (to find some more topics to post the heck out of; you know me) and I literally was so confused at what was going on. I couldn't follow a topic at all.

Yeah, same here. It hard to just "jump in" to that section of the forums.

If the quote spans several paragraphs it's very difficult for me to know exactly which part you want to put across. If quoting a one liner from a great thinker clearly gets your point across, by all means. If 90% of your post is a quote from some two-bit blogger or a completely unknown publication and you're putting up more than half their post without context... I can't read your mind; I don't know why you're posting that. Give me context, filter what you liked about it, summarize it or derive your own point from it.

And I really regret telling you about the Julie that is me. My friends thought that one was the funniest, but I forced them to go back to the previous one, which was actually a male name. You have no idea how many odd looks I got from people when I responded to Julie that day.

Speaking as someone who regularly gets called Shelby, it's not that bad. If you just play along, it can actually be pretty funny.

The nicknamed was garnered Freshman year. I had a class with a couple of specific people. One was a friend of a friend, I guess. The other was the school ditz. She had a discussion one day where she was like, "I want to take birth control because it makes my boobs bigger." The best explanation for her is that she is actually pretty smart, but rather than use any of her neurons, she chooses to instead pretend like she's an idiot, and she's kept up that fantasy for so long that she has become a self-fulfilling prophecy - she truly believes she's an idiot.

 

So one day, towards the end of the semester, she turns to me, having sat next to me for 3 months, and proclaims to the general quiet that "This kid looks like Shelby!" One of her friends turns around and looks at me, and she's said something along the lines of, "That one Shelby from the one class?! Yeah, he totally does!" The friend of a friend busts out laughing, and decides he's going to use the name, and manages it since we had a class together next semester.

 

Fast forward to next year. I'm not good friends with the friend of a friend, so he hasn't introduced me around as Shelby very much. However, he has told our mutual friend, red headed girl, and at some point I made fun of her. So red headed girl is like, "I'll give you to the count of three to run. One..." And I just stood there bemused, because I'm like, "[red headed girl], you're scared of my Taekwondo abilities. You're probably the only person I know who is, including the people who have seen me break boards and free spar. What can you do to me?" "Two...Three. Everyone, let me introduce you to Shelby."

 

And so all of red headed girl's friends came to know me as Shelby, because only about half of them knew my real name, and none felt the urge to correct things. And that's the story of my nickname.

 

In a slightly more humorous story, the ditz was in the musical this year. The other kids in the musical managed to convince her that the Navi from Avatar were real, and that they were coming to the opening show. Apparently she showed up at one practice having asked around about it, and wondered why only her family didn't know they were real, and everyone else did. So, even people not in the musical played along, purely based on her reputation. It was beautiful, tbh.

I hate in war video games when they completely ruin the immersion or the feeling of being a useful part of the war effort by having YOU PERSONALLY accomplish EVERY FRIGGIN' OBJECTIVE OF THE ENTIRE WAR. CoD is probably one of the biggest offenders. This is why I love Grand Strategy games, you don't know how it's going to go.

For example, today at my job, a wonderful little lady called up, her name was pronouced cuuuu-neeeesaaa. It was spelled, Kanessa. You know, like Vanessa with a K at the beginning. She bugged out when I asked her to spell it. Hah.

I think I hold the ghetto-est name record...or, a friend of mine does.
