Mostly it's the same attitude that your post contains - that optimism in any form is childish, so they seem to think that cynicism is inherently 'adult'. What's wrong with having a positive outlook to life? What's wrong with grabbing the chances you get in the hope they'll turn out well? Sure, sometimes things will go wrong, but what will you have gained in your life if you didn't try at all because it wouldn't lead to anything anyway?
