I'm aware that it's a generalization, but I tend to just not read anything written by a strongly religious person.

As I said, I'm aware that it's a generalization, but it's always served me well... confirmed yet and yet again.

"Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security."

Support transparency... and by extension, freedom and democracy.

EDIT: As I thought about it more, I realized that this post may not have been about me, though I assumed it was as I mention my faith in my profile and am open enough about it in the forum as a whole. If it wasn't, then I am confused as to where it is coming from. Also, it's a horrible reason to discredit anyone. Attack their info, not the person.

And you came into this conversation just to discredit me why?

My information comes straight from my Research in Psychology class at a severely NON-religious campus(AKA top 20 most Godless campuses as ranked by the Princeton Review).

Besides that, I was just making sure everyone was doing okay on the statistics involved, not making an argument either way. If you care, I am very much in support of gay rights.

Looks like my questions were ignored, guess I'll ask again.

Can a business refuse to hire homosexual people? If so, can they refuse to hire black people? Following that line of thinking, can a business deny service to customers based on race?

Can I make a policy that says "We won't ask you about your religious beliefs, but if you bring them up, you can be kicked out"?

Are heterosexual couples more "special" or more "deserving" than homosexual couples?

Don't know who exactly you were asking this of, but all of those shouldn't be allowed.

Yes, business can deny business to ANYONE they want. There was a court case about this regarding a racist hotel owner way back when. Forget the name.

However, they cannot deny employees it. Unless they're gay.

Zomg the Catholic Church is so bigoted because it won't allow gays to marry!!!!!11!!!one

Lets get something clear here:

The Catholic Church teaches that sex is for procreation. That's the reason it is completely against contraceptives or abortifacients of any kind.

They also teach that marriage is for procreation. The sacrament of marriage is for two people to go forth and multiply.

Finally, they teach that everyone is called to be and remain chaste. This means if you're single, you're not masturbating, looking at pornography, having premarital sex, etc. This means if you're married, you're staying faithful to your spouse. It also means that when you do the "marital act", you finish to completion (no pulling out early).

Why doesn't the Church allow gay people to marry? They can't naturally conceive a child, plain and simple. There is nothing hateful or bigoted about it. If the Church were to change its position, it would ruin the sacrament of marriage.

As far as the list of things gay people can and can't do - I'm glad they made the point about money. That's all the purpose of the debate has ever been. The "rights" or rather, privileges of married people weren't always there. In the past 60 or so years in the United States, legislatures have enacted laws that make it easier for nuclear families (meaning Mom, Dad, and children) to live on a single parent's income, with the idea that the other would be at home raising the children. Some of the laws are common sense, and others are abstract and don't make much sense. Either way, its taken about 60 years for nuclear families to get these privileges. The only reason gay people want to be called *married* is so in one fell swoop they'll have all the *rights* of nuclear families, instead of the 60 years of legislating it took for everyone else to get.

People like to tell me that "you can't legislate morality," and point to prohibition. I like to think you can't legislate respect - you can't forcefully make people respect each other. Even after getting "marriage," there will still be gay bashers or haters or bigots, whatever you want to call it. How long has it been since the civil rights movement?

United States Federal law prohibits employment discrimination based on a persons' color, national origin, race, religion, or sex (gender.)

There are also laws in place to prohibit discrimination based on age, disabilities, and sexual orientation.

At my place of work, if we refused to hire someone based on the fact that they were gay, not only would my company be held responsible, I could personally be held responsible in a court of law, and could end up having to pay that person millions of dollars out of my own pocket.

Unfortunately, as long as the Catholic Church has the power it does there is no chance of homosexuals of having completely equal rights to heterosexual people.

And yea that .pdf is pretty spot on. (Heck when I put my proud to be gay thing in the middle of my sig people accused me of pushing my gayness onto them on the forums. *sigh*)

I don't really get the whole proud to be gay thing, it'd be like me having 'proud to not take it up the arse' in my sig. It doesn't serve any purpose and only shows what my posts prove anyway.

This is completely ridiculous. People could have said the same thing about descrimination against blacks...

It wouldn't be like that at all. Maybe if gays were seen as equal to straights, it would be the same thing. Saying you are proud to be gay is letting the world know that it is time for a change; that being gay doesnt make his life any worse than yours.

If I put "proud to be straight" in my sig, I'd be called a bigot, yet I'm saying the same thing - because where I live, legally homosexuals are equal to heterosexuals.

If I put "proud to be straight" in my sig, I'd be called a bigot, yet I'm saying the same thing - because where I live, legally homosexuals are equal to heterosexuals.

"Where you live" doesnt change the fact that there is still a negative social stigma towards gays in a majority of the world.

And again, you can't just look at the words and take the meaning from it. "Proud to be ___" doesn't just mean what the dictionary definition of those words are, thrown together. "Proud to be _____" is a way of people saying that they have a minority lifestyle (which is usually descriminated against) and they aren't letting idiots ruin their self esteem.

If you want, I am sure saru would change his sig to "I am a gay person, and despite the adversity I face, I feel great about myself" but it is just much easier to take the format that has been used for years ("proud to be black, gay, deaf, paralyzed, etc").

And what the hell is your point? If I had a religion that said when I turn 18 I should get a slave, would you say my religion isn't doing something hateful?

My point is that the Catholic Church's position isn't to *hurt* gays, and that changing its definition of marriage would ruin the sacrament of marriage, and it would contradict many of its teachings. Unfortunately, there are people that can't see past the fact that the "Church hates gays".

And what are you on about "legislating respect"? Nobody is saying we need to make a law that says you can't have illogical opinions about people. Gays just want legal equality...

My point about respect is that asking for "gay marriage" has never been about respect, it has always been about money. Anyone that believes its about respect is delusional, or an idealist (same thing, really).

Ok, I can accept that a large percentage of people don't accept homosexuality - but it doesn't give them extra rights.

I have every right to put "proud to be straight" in my sig, just as he has a right to put "proud to be gay".

Yet It's looked down upon - just like the person who started a "Caucasian club" was called racist, even though there are black clubs, asian clubs, brown clubs.

Equality means equality - nothing more, nothing less.

You are missing the point.

"Proud to be gay" does not just mean that someone picked a random thing about themselves to be proud of. The phrase is used by gay people to reinforce their self esteem, and let other people know that it is time to accept homosexuality.

The same thing is true for "black clubs". It isn't just a group of people who happen to be black. It is a group of people who want to push an agenda of making sure that their minority culture is heard. They typically want to back up black issues in society.

When you have a "poker club" it isnt just a gathering of people who like poker, the poker club PLAYS poker together. When you make an ethnicity club, your goals usually focus on awareness of your culture. White culture does not need to be spread, is not facing opression, and is not a minority.

Ok, and what If I feel that my self esteem has been lowered by the prevalence of gay people? (obviously this is ridiculous, but it's just an example). Are you saying I don't have the right to be proud of an attribute I have?

An ethnic club celebrates their ethnicity. It may have other motives, but the base celebration is there. Do white people not have that right?

In fact, in Canada, it's widely expected that within 50 years, white people will be a minority. And in the world as a whole, white people are a minority.

They've already lost that power. Separation of Church and State is the new norm. If the Catholic Church really had power over laws(in Canada at least) abortion would be illegal, gay marriage would be illegal, contraception would be illegal, divorces would be illegal, and more.

I'm not sure where you're going with this. I've already proven to you that in developed countries the church has no power over law. No, this isn't the case in every single country, but more and more it is the norm.
