Ouchy
Lol: The abbreviation of 'Laugh out Loud'. Since long ago, in the early days of the internet, and texting, abbreviations have been used by people through out the world, as a form of quickly writing something, and because of sheer laziness. In the beginning, Lol had a meaning. You were saying it, as you found something generically funny. It made you laugh. You literally laughed, loudly. Now days, Lol is one of the most common terms used on the internet. Young and old. It has become so popular, that it has even broke into the real world. When something funny happens, they will say Lol. Lol was spreading like a virus, everywhere. But with the contagiousness of it, it soon lost its true meaning. Lol become the beginning of sentences, the ending of sentences, and sentences themselves. People would shout it out whenever something happened. They didn't even have to find it funny. They would just type Lol meaninglessly. It has become an ironic statement. They don't find it funny, but type it any way. I can recall someone say "Lolq" Laughing out Loud Quietly, and "LOLI", Laughing Out Loud Inside. Or as to Demetri Martin puts it now "LTMQ" Laughing to myself quietly. It is an internet ice breaker. So easy to type, with no thought process required. Yet it can keep conversation going. For a short period of time before more Lol must be used again. If something is unfunny, or a situation is awkward, a Lol will be used. It is an internet ice breaker. So easy to type, with no thought process required. Yet it can keep conversation going. For a short period of time before more Lol must be used again. If something is unfunny, or a situation is awkward, a Lol will be used. Fellow men of Tip.It, I am asking you to stop using Lol. Think of something else to use instead. It makes you seem unintelligent, and is just stupid. Men, do it for yourselves to stop using it, and do it for the internet. My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

obfuscator
lol But seriously, I may use it while typing, but never irl. Or at least I can't remember doing so. "It's not a rest for me, it's a rest for the weights." - Dom Mazzetti

tripsis
I have like a ranking system for my abbreviations  Lol = If accompanied with an emoticon, it means I found it funny. If not, I said it to someone who said something that THEY thought was funny but I didn't.. I say "lol" to make them feel better.. XDLmao = Really funny, I probably laughed out loud.Rofl = Similar to "lmao" but maybe one step up. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

DragnFly
But it didn't originate on the internet, it originated from text messaging. Wrong. LOL become popular thru places like Usenet and IRC, infact it was well common use in 1998 when I had started using the internet. Some of the terms and abbreviations used in internet slang appear to derive from fanspeak, the slang of science fiction fandom; which seems unsurprising, since a significant portion of computer programmers and users have historically been science fiction readers. In 1975, Raphael Finkel of Stanford University compiled a collection of hacker slang, the Jargon File, from technical cultures, such as the MIT AI Lab, the Stanford AI Lab (SAIL) and others, of the old ARPANET AI/LISP/PDP-10 communities. Two items on this list in current use as Internet slang are "flame" and "loser". By 1990, the Jargon File had been enriched with examples of shorthand used in talk mode between two terminals, (for example, "BTW", "FYI", and "THX") as well as some slang expressions in use on Usenet and new commercial networks like CompuServe (for example, "LOL", "ROTF", and "AFK".)[1] A Computerworld article, discussing the origin of several current web slang terms, cites a still-online FidoNet article from 1989,[2] which displays emoticons in addition to all-caps shortcuts like "LOL", "BRB" and "TYT".[3] Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_slang As you can see, it was in use at least by 1989.The first text message was sent in 1992, and texting was not widespread for years later. Texting stole from internet slang, not the other way around. D's guide to 1 Item objects

nine naked men
I still use it every now and then, but it's nowhere near as bad as I was like, several years ago. Tesset
Why abstain from Lol? Sure, it doesn't really mean, "Laughing out loud" anymore, but it's still got a meaning. Kinda like how "gay" doesn't always mean homosexual anymore. Except, you know, lol isn't needlessly offensive to people, I hope. Telling someone not to use a word because its meaning has evolved is stupid, in all honesty.
