Xbox 360 RROD

When I tried to turn on my 360 today it gave me a red ring of death (3 segments on the ring). This is the second time it has happened - What is my best option? - asking for a repair or demanding a new 360?

3 Rings is considered RROD.

Your best bet is to get it sent off to Microsoft for repair. If this is the second time, they normally give you a bunch of stuff to say sorry anyway (I received 1 month free online play, a game and a controller). You could buy a new one, though I've no idea about how reliable the new versions are.

Only by people who don;t get what rrod is.

rood is called red ring of death because it means exactly that: Your xbox is dead, it cannot be repaired.

1, 2 and 3 red segments are all repairable issues.

Finished reading your post and I curious how to force cause a RROD, I fancy some free stuff! and apparently the new xboxs break less as when they are close to over heating they shut down.

Smash it with a hammer and buy a PS3.

I'd send it away for repairs, assuming you still have warranty.

as for this grammar-nazi-ness of RROD. Its a ring, that is glowing red. thus = RED RING OF DEATH. not full ring, half ring. A ring shaped that is glowing red, regardless how many sectors is still RROD. (breathes in and out)

The ironic thing is, my PS3 is broken as well. We've had the PS3 and 360 for the same amount of time, it's convenient that they both decide to break now

I rang up Customer Service and went through the process of getting it repaired, and said it was the second time in so many months and is a tad annoying, so they put me on the phone to a superviser who said he'd be giving me a bunch of items to say sorry.

Smash it with a hammer, yep.

OT: My friend did the overheating trick, and it's worked ever since.

Worse, it sounds indicative of something like a power surge. I have to ask littleboy, do you keep your gaming consoles shielded behind a surge-protected power strip, and/or perhaps a full-blown UPS?

lol you just [cabbage]ted on pawclaw. yea, 3 red rings = done son. 4 = just give it time. i assume pawclaw owns a PS3? that's probably why he thought 4 rings = the REAL RROD.

have you tried the youtube fix? you wrap a towel around it, and the thing overheats itself and automatically resets to factory settings or something like that

Yeah, i tried the towel trick when my first Xbox got the RROD. It worked the first time i tried it for about a month and a half then the RROD returned and the trick never seemed to work again. Got rid of that xbox and got a new one.

I decide to send mine in, and it said it was still under warranty. So I send it in (after 2 weeks of having the shipping label lol), and come to find out they want to charge us to repair it, even though THEY SAID IT'S UNDER WARRANTY. I say f that, cancel repair, the next day just buy a new one. Go home, start playing and have a good time. 3 days later, a box comes, and inside... a brand new xbox. With one of those 1 month subscription cards. And they didn't charge us. So now I'm trying to sell this one... no cables or anything so it's kind of hard to...

TL;DR send it in, cancel repair, profit.

Just get the new console.

Your most likely going to get one of the new ones anyways.

Yeah, send it back for repairs, they might give you free stuff.

The towel trick is a horrible idea. Microsoft can probably tell when somebody has purposely overheated the machine, and probably wouldn't fix it for you after that, if it stopped working again.

That only lasts a little while, and lasts a shorter and shorter amount of time the more you do it.

yea i know. its a temp fix. id use it once, twice at the most.

and ross, after towel, might as well get the xbox 360 slim. no RROD "guaranteed"

Each ring means something different. All 4 means you have a AV cord problem, most likely your cord is faulty. If it is 3 rings it means hardware failure. On the majority of consoles the CPU and GPU heatsinks fail, or the Solder Joints become brittle. I have fixed a couple by tearing into them but I only did so if the warranty was up. My personal experience was a 50% chance of repair. I bought a 3 red ring of death console pretty cheap and I still have it and it runs fine. Was manufactured in like 2007. If it is 1 ring and it is in quadrant 4 that means it is a E-74 error and it will tell you so on the screen. That is somewhat harder to fix but is the same concept as the 3 RROD.

As for the towel trick what happens is when you overheat the console it melts the compound that is between your CPU or GPU and the solder joints back together and when you let it cool down it sometimes will make a connection. When I repaired the ones I had I simply removed the old compound and replaced it with new compound and used washers to hold the X-clamps tighter on the CPU and GPU.

Best of luck with your xbox.

Yeah don't go towelling your xbox 360 unless the waranty is out as I'm pretty sure that breaks the warranty on it...

Idk what you're gonna do but what i wouldn't do is send it in for repairs, i had my xbox flashing 3 red segments a few times, my xbox doesn't runs some games and sometimes i get long ingame freezes that strangely recover back after a minute or two.

I learned to coop with it but heck for 50 you can get a brand new xbox that hasn't been used yet, if you search long enough there's always people who sell unnused consoles for odd reasons.

I learned that if you send something in for repairs you better be ready to wait a couple of months before you get it back.

But then again, looks like you could get a free controller and a game if it's not repairable, if you play smart you might even get to select that game or color of controller.

Meh xbox are so cheap nowadays you could even get a second handed one for 25 euro but those might also have some system errors lol, who knows.

I won't send in my xbox because it's life is hanging on a thin wire that can just carry enough weight, i think if they try to fix it they might break it entirely.
