The ability to produce lumber at an industrial scale allowed the Dutch to become the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world during the seventeenth century. Scruffy5389
Time? And by time, I mean our ways of measuring it and keeping track, right down to individual seconds. People all arrive at work exactly on time at 5:00:00, any later and they're late. That's a big defining factor of our lives.

Guest GhostRanger
In a world with less porn... omg its true, so much imformation at our fingertips, and people use the internet for porn... people can use the internet for what ever that pleases them, its not for you to decide what people can do. i find metal to be pretty useful, i guess the first bronze that was made was pretty cool. humans didn't invent "metal"... i guess you could say the processes for extracting the ore though. Humans didn't invent the wheel either... just the process of carving a stone into a round shape.

Necromagus
It might be a good idea to split this up by time period/century, it would make it a lot easier to pick... Zonorhc
Agriculture. Once humans learned that they didn't have to move around to get their food anymore, they settled down, built cities and started thinking about more than just where their next meal is going to come from. In time, lands became prized for agriculture, and people had to create more imaginative ways of killing each other in order to protect their territory and keep themselves fed. If we had not developed agriculture, we would still be largely nomadic, and would never have discovered those things that were crucial for an established urban area or could only be feasible in one, such as pottery, metallurgy, engineering, roads, writing or high diplomacy. Without cities, we could never have had organised conflict, and remember that a lot of the technology we take for granted today was developed in order to aid a war effort. In effect, if we hadn't learned to grow our own food in the first place, we wouldn't have any problems with famine, because we would just move on to better areas. Agriculture also degrades soils over time, and this backs up my previous statement. ____
Slash and Burn was probably the best technique ever created. Pity the tempation of mass agriculture ruined it all. Why couldn't people just grow enough food for themself :(

pattycake
well im a little confused now did u mean an ivention or a concept. like 1 guy said agriculture but it wasnt like 1 day ......... "Say Joe, how bout we like invent some kinda system in which to farm our crops more efficiantly" says fred "Dam homie pass that S@#^ thisa way DawG"replies joe nar just mucking f00l. honestly if its a object then i would say the map. because without maps there is no sence of bearing and people would of been getting lost all over the place. if its a concept i would have to say conspiracy. Think about it conspiracy has weeded out all those little nasties in our world- witchcraft -the devil+his associates -bananna flavoured marshmallows. for the worst concept i would have to say monarchy, though i do agree with that other guy- are cloths REALLY neccisary. that is all children.   el patto
Necrofuss
agriculture isn't an invention its a skill/technique, an invention is someone made by hands, you dont really make plants, you grow em, so it shouldnt count. Oh ya another would be wires cause that is in almost everything today.

How2PK
The whole sanitation thing (probably not the most infuential though). I've seen it in a movie (Donnie Darko of course), but it seems to be pretty logical that it is important and infuential.
