Lost 250m.

Got hacked and lost 250m, however that doesn't mean i'm quitting. I Just want to say one thing however.

Jagex needs to sort out the recovery system, I had put in all the correct information and afterwards it said the info was correct apart from the membership details of which was on my account (The hacker had put it on it)

I did get my account back by calling Jagex after the 5th attempt of recovery.

Jagex fails with security!! They should atleast make it optional to write in password on a scrambled on screen keyboard. That makes keylogging and pishing much harder!

A system like maplestory logon, if you have ever played it.

My lame drops:
6 Effigys
1 D Med - 1 D Dagger
1 Verac's Helmet - 1 Guthan's Platebody

I think Maple Story's only safe as there's little point to none for hacking accounts compaired to RS and the amount you call sell stuff for.

Still, sorry to hear about it man. Happened to me about a month ago and lost 40m. Nothing compaired to you but was still 1/5 of my wealth.

...I have IMMENSE bad luck with drops :|

Honestly I thought Cheesy getting hacked would be enough for Jagex to sort out their recovery system.

Sorry about your loss its always a shame to get Jagex'd out of your bank

I'm unsure if jagex has updated in the past few years their recovery system, but when I was hacked I was stunned how easily I could get my account back (I did this to test the recovery system, purposefully only giving some information)..

I gave only "static" information, information that I am unable to change (4 passwords in the past, email used to sign up etc). Not information I had power over, and shockingly I was given the account back. Unsuprisingly about 9 months later I was hacked again (this was just 2 months before free trade was removed). I was even accused from real world trading and my prayer stat was wiped. (back in 2007) - in total I think I lost about 100M. After that I didn't notice anything happening (during 2007 I saw constantly people trying to log in - especially if I went to falador selling stuff in large quantities).

Just be very careful, the first year or something to keep a bank pin at all times and play "low profile". You'll get back on track sooner or later, and just remember to keep enjoying the game.

ON a side node: did they drop everything? I remember getting very, very pissed that this botter dropped even my untradables. I had a big stack of quest items, which I lost all. This made me more angry than the cash: I couldn't see the point.

First they came to fishing

and I didn't speak out because I wasn't fishing

Then they came to the yews

and I didn't speak out because I didn't cut yews

Then they came for the ores

and I didn't speak out because I didn't collect ores

Then they came for me

and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Why is it that all of a sudden a bunch of players are coming back to Runescape to find they've been hacked? Can't you keep your account secure? It's not that hard, just don't download phishy looking links, set a good password, don't tell it to anyone, scan your computer for viruses and keyloggers regularly, keep a bank pin and set recovery questions. Now that I mention it, maybe it's not that simple for some people... I mean, look at that list, that's more tasks than I can count on my free hand!

Not trying to offend anyone, but there's certainly a reason you're getting hacked. There's only so much Jagex can do.

...what? MS gold is bought and sold all the time. There is an extremely high reason to hack both accounts, because both have thriving RWTing markets.

Which, if anything, should be an indication that people will be hacked when there's a desire for their stuff, whatever the reason.

I've got to agree with you here. I share sympathy with the TC, but...well, yeah.

Yeah i was recently hacked for 90m (my bank.) but they ignored my chaotics, effigies, void, firecapes... All my untradables. They even left my imbued berserker ring, i'm guessing that was because they're too stupid to unimbue it instead of being kind, though. (They also left 3m MOB points and 700 slayer points, worth a total of about 6m if they were exchanged for items, again, i'm assuming stupidity over kindness)

If they took my chaotics i probably would have quit that account for good and focused on my zerker, but they didn't, so i won't!

yeah, i have my account back now and have made about 15m back, i am also trying to get 80 dungeoneering so that i am able to kill frost dragons and get heaps of gold :) my dungeoneering level is currently 60.

I too think jagex should have a major security update. Also i dont know how my account was hacked, my account was incredibly secure and with a maximum character password of which contained scrambled up letters and numbers, plus i have never told or have given even hints about what my password was. nor have i done any rwting of any kind.

Actually, you need 85 for Frosts. It's also heavily botted, so it'll be really frustrating.

Honestly... for the longest time I would have said I agree with you 100%. But I know too many people who have done all of those things and STILL have had their accounts compromised. Maybe part of it is their fault for having *something* insecure, but I am also inclined to think that it is partly Jagex's recovery system. It seems far too easy to recover accounts. It shouldn't be that way.

Jagex really needs to implement some sort of 2 step verification system.

Their recovery system is garbage, which is why it's a good idea to keep all recovery answers completely irrelevant. It makes the account just a bit safer in case someone was to get some of your personal information and use that against you.

It's very easy to recover an account if you haven't logged in fo a few months.

I had a friend recently who hasn't played Runescape in years and forgot/lost all his account details... didn't enter any recovery answers or the billing info or the email address... they still allowed him to recover the account o.O

It does greatly worry me how easily people could get your account if you do not have a email linked to it...

Yeah, I just recovered my account. It was really simple. Gave a few old passwords and an approximate date of when the account was created and I was pretty much let back in around 10 minutes later. Glad I got it, but jeesh was it easy O.o

Wouldnt be suprised if people found a way to fake recover accounts somehow. Like, type random crap info and wait til they can change a password. But Im also not tech savvey, that may be impossible! XD

Friend of mine has been hacked three times in the past month. The first time he was hacked the losses were minimal. He scanned his pc and found a few funny things which were removed. He changed his pass and went on with his thing. A few days later he was hacked again. This time he lost close to 300m and a Chaotic. He lost it in a 30 minute period while he was at Subway, so it must have been someone he knows on Runescape. We talked on skype for a few minutes and i helped him set up new recoveries and a new password (by that i mean i gave him tips on what to use). he set up a new e-mail address to link to his Runescape account. His password also got changed. He used to bot, so i told him to make sure that there was nothing bot related on his pc anymore. Went alright for a while until he was hacked again a few days ago. He only lost about 5m this time but it shocks me that even after everything we went through to ensure safety, the account is still not safe. He tried recovering his account (whomever hacked him now changed his pass). He couldn't recover it using the e-mail nor the recovery system. His account got locked and he only managed to get it back last night.

  • 4 weeks later...

I decided to try and recover my password recently for fun, and apparently all it asks you is to enter your email address, and it basically lets you reset if from there. I don't see the point in recovery questions anymore?

maybe if someone changes your e-mail account for rs? or isn't that possible without you noticing at your e-mail?
