they don't "have" to bot them, they choose to so they aren't forced to grind 100 + hrs just for a virtual nonexistant number that represents how long your character has performed an action.

I really don't understand this whole "i don't like the game but I bot 200m cooking". That's like setting your microwave timer for 3 days and letting it count down then destroying your microwave and claiming on a public message board that you didn't like microwaves anyway.

What exactly is so hard to understand about this? The entire premise of RS is and has been that you do activities, which are for the most insufferably dull in exchange for some social-status or item/rewards of value. That's the "legitimate" way to play the game. Naturally, however, there are those who want the reward as desperately as anyone else but are incapable of actually doing it legitimately, or refuse to do so; so they take shortcuts. I don't engage in this behavior myself(I don't bot or abuse bugs), but it's not entirely perplexing or irrational behavior. They like one aspect of the game(rewards), but abhor another(the work/path required to obtain said rewards). There's no contradiction or anomaly about these sorts of people, you encounter them in real life all the time and some of these people happen to play the game. Have you never encountered the sort of people in school who cheat on exams or plagiarize assignments, or have them ghostwritten?

I think they're holding on to the game they used to love. Even though a lot of people have botted through their entire time on runescape it still means a lot to come and play. Like Yoko said, they like the rewards but can't do what is needed for them by themselves. I like the idea of the rewards, but have never been able to get them fully so I've never been a very high level.

I think it's mostly that they're turning it into a game they do enjoy - a game of how much they can get away with before anybody catches on. Similar reasoning with people who do crazy things when they feel the current options they have are too unfavorable to continue playing by the rules. The reward isn't what the accomplishment originally means, but the fact that they can make it look like a joke so that they don't have to care about it anymore.

As I explained prior to this, when people say "ZOMG, I don't like RS so I am going to go bot", what they are implying is that they still want the reward/end-game stuff, but they don't actually want to work for them and consider it a waste(in many cases, it is a waste). To go back to the "people who cheat on exams" analogy and modify it somewhat: I don't like writing exams or tests, but that doesn't mean I don't recognize they have instrumental value or that I don't like the reward(grades, passing classes) and so I still write them. The difference between someone like me and these other people is, whereas I play by the rules, they simply take their distaste of the structure of the game to it's natural conclusion: they cheat.

I realize that's why players bot.

 

What I was getting at was that some players try to pass off the notion that they really don't care about anything in the game despite investing time into it, probably in an effort to as Randox pointed out save face.

Also not everyone on that list was botting Castle Wars.

 

I for one was doing it for xp and at least 3/4 of us on that list were doing the same. All of us reached 200m cooking together and moved to firemaking if you've noticed runetracker. And no the bot detection didn't catch us, it was our stupid mistakes to show off on runetracker to get us banned by naming and shaming on hlf.

This, there is no bot detection.. All of us got spammed about on hlf because we each had 40m + xp weeks for 1 month lol

For starters IDGAF. I charged back $350 worth of SoF spins, Solomons, and membership I bought from Jagex within the last 6 months, a few hours after I found out that I was banned. The joke is on them. Second, I have to disagree with Snuggzz. I bragged about botting 2 years ago. By the time I maxed and got HLF access 99% of people knew that (from all the screenies I gave to my friends over Skype that got leaked). Jagex knew about this and didnt do shit. In fact they reprimanded people for naming and shaming me. Its safe to say that 90% of the bannings were from the botwatch and the other 10% were from the "bragging" and "notoriety" IMO.

 

Also, Loyal and I mins after we got banned, compiled a list of people who we knew botted and reported them to Richard. As a result, like 90% of the people on our lists were banned that same day (sorry moh :P). Turns out that its 95% now with the recent bannings of Safer el7ob (you copied my comp cape colors; I snitched on you) and Gang.

 

The game is lame as [bleep] now. That's why I resorted to botting CWs because there was literally nothing else to do. Glad I only had like 958 games and not something close to 5k when I got banned. I woulda been even more pissed. I wanted to get banned; and my wish was finally granted after 2 years of RWTing and botting. My only regret is that since I knew I was suicide botting, I should have moved my wealth I had on my account to one of my mules. Anyways, time for me to have more of a life and not be a virgy anymore xD

No it's highly amusing that you have to keep a bot running 24/7 hoping to get banned before you can actually call it quits.

Ahahahahaha what is there to achieve? It's a game. You take all of this way too serious.

Shame Jagex haven't banned the high profile players that have quite clearly abused the PoP bugs as there is no way to reach what some people have legitimately this soon.

offtopic: i think the definition of having a completionist cape in an mmo is an utter joke because mmos change often and there's really no way to be "done" with it except quitting

 

in that sense the 5000 castle wars games is completely logical because at that point you're just making shit up to claim that there's some way to complete the game

 

the relative prestige you would gain is what would fit in a thimble

 

the things that jagex has done in order to satisfy the addiction to insignificance just disappoints me
