Ancientsone
How would the languages work? Would the npc's and text be in diffrent languages? Because you still have to interact with others and most speak english unless they plan on bringing servers into the game with diffrent languages. Very intreasting, cant wait to see how it turns out. chaosgone
Thanks for the information! It sounds like it was a fun presentation. Even though I only speak English, I will probably check out the German server when it comes online in the spring, to see what it is like. I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m glad to hear that Jagex is doing so well, since I like Runescape, and would like the company to be successful. I will probably try out the new game when it comes out in 2007. http://www.chaosgone.blogspot.com

Y2g2003
I'm shocked by anyone who thinks that working for jagex "Is the opportunity of a lifetime." Diffferent people have different opinions. And you'll probably find that the younger users of this forum would see it as just that. The younger players more then likely just want to work for the company because they think they could get every item in the game with little to no effort (which I'm sure on the test servers they could). That and they probably have superiority issues amoung other normal players of the game. And if they aren't young, they're just simply obsessed with the game. Its not a bad thing, really... they just want to be a part of nearly every aspect of the game (and maybe for some of the reasons I stated in the above paragraph too). Now as a grown up and programmer (like Craven is)... this is just a nice little job to maybe help pay the bills. No where did I see him claim this is an opportunity of a lifetime. So yeah... try not to be "shocked" by it all... you have to consider the source. R.I.P Shiva
richpoepaap
Wonder what the new game will be like... And personally (and you might find this odd) I do not like the idea of runescaoe in other languages, even my own native Dutch. Ah well... :? Bubsa
The main purpose of the talk was to recruit people on my course to work at Jagex in the customer support unit. ROFL Good will hunting. This is how much you all raised for charity. Thank you.
Milo88
i wish i could work for jagex for customer support from my home :S it's a bit too hard to get to cambridge every morning from capital of finland, helsinki. i never would have guessed runescape had been written in totally different language :/ but i bet it has lots of scripts what is common to JS or c++ maybe even python and perl scripts being mixed, you never know ;) i wish they would make official client version for linux and mac :/ and if it has language packages for each language i would still keep playing with english package because with my knowledge of translations, finnish looks TERRIBLE when some consoles and control panel texts gets translated.. windows looks readable when it's in english, and easy to find stuff if you happen to need help or if you help someone.. same with linux, but when they're translated to finnish, you're totally lost where is everything. you remember spots stuff but you start trying to figure out the real names :/ real pain in bottom. Arthu
If they release RS on german or even dutch, it will greatly raise my grades :) Must hope that they do the language versions. I am already seeing pmods everywhere... I am unsure about that part :? 99+ all 23rd March 2012 - 2496 total 13th June 2012.9000+ dragon drops! killkill1234
hopefully with the new languages you will be able to change when you like between them. Should be a great way to learn and practice new languages, might even be able to convine a few teachers to let you play during school for educational purposes. That's a great idea. If they release a spanish version I would be set. My final was a D. I got into trouble for that.
jaklumen
Or recode the text into the language of choice. Which is why it is probably taking so long. Then once that is done, they would probably have client options for the languages. Who knows, maybe the language options could even be changed via the in game options. I'm leaning toward the new client idea though... I agree. Restricting alternate languages to servers would limit their growth capacity... they'd have much more flexibility coding it to a new client or hardcoding it into game options. I'm not a programmer, so don't flame me... I'm guessing that the code regarding all game text (as it stands presently in English) would have to be reworked to a standard for all languages that the client would then handle. In other words, I'm thinking that the text (in English) isn't set up to be controlled by a client. I'm looking forward to seeing RS in Spanish... I am American, but I do speak Spanish. Since they are expanding into other languages, they might be able to rework the censor so that legitimate text is kept and cussing (in the other languages) is censored. I was at the Fishing Guild the other day and someone started cussing in Spanish... and listed just about all the Mexican Spanish swear words I knew of. I was also told by a friend here that the censor currently censors parts of text in Swedish (apparently since the censor handles text strings in English only). The website link reminded me how bad webpages used to look when I first started accessing the World Wide Web with Mosaic and Netscape back in 1994. I'm guessing that Andrew is close to my age. Im just starting into programing, and even though waht i use is way diffrent to even java, it still follows slightly the same path. It woudl be very hard to make an in game option. Youd have to rework everything into the code, and make translations for everything. It would be much easier to make diffrent servers. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Y2g2003
It would be much easier to make diffrent servers. Think thats how Star Wars Galaxies have theirs. And I agree... it makes much more sense. The problem there is... it'll require more servers. I think Jagex can afford them by now though. I tend to still think that jagex is a small company, making little profit, when thats probably inaccurate at the moment. I definitly think they'll be going with individual clients though, now that people are agreeing with what I said. :) Both the other games I played had separate clients for different languages. It just sounds like thats the route they'll be taking. That and they'll probably run into less conflicts that way. They only real problem I see is... new updates will almost have to take longer to make. Because they would have to rework at least the text for each language. So players might be kissing those weekly updates good bye for awhile. Then again... I could be wrong. R.I.P Shiva

desipardesi
If anyone was curious, the only other MMORPG with a larger following than runescape (besides WoW) is Everquest (the original). Runescape is larger than Everquest II. hohto
I truely hope they release that German version asap, would be a grea way to selfstudy that language :P I know the basics, but that would be really helpful to my vocabulary. I wouldn't mind if I got a place from their customer support. I'm probably going to an university after army, so a scholarship to Cambridge wouldn't be that bad thing :P I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.Name Removed by Administrator ~Turtlefemm
timmay929
It's pretty cool that they are releasing it in new languages, even though i'm not going to use it since English is the only thing I speak.
