RuneScape Latin American Spanish: Now Live

Today sees the release of RuneScape Latin American Spanish: our fifth localised version of the game. Spanish-speaking players can now enjoy RuneScape in dedicated game worlds with all in-game text translated, as well as a Latin American Spanish-language website and wiki. We'll be supporting this alongside the English, German, French and Brazilian Portuguese versions of the game for all future content.

 

Bear in mind that - as with the other language-specific versions of the game - RuneScape Latin American Spanish uses the same game save as the others. If you've completed a piece of non-repeatable content - such as a quest - in another language, you won't be able to complete it again in the new version of the game.

 

To access RuneScape Latin American Spanish, simply visit www.runescape.com and select the Spanish flag from the drop down menu at the bottom of the page. Then, log in and start playing!

I've always wondered why Brazilian Portuguese existed before Spanish. I think Portuguese may rank higher than Spanish for most spoken languages, but at that Chinese ranks the highest and so far there is no dedicated servers for that. So at the very least I expected it to have been there with Portuguese.Nonetheless I think this is good. Time to brush up on my espanol.

 

I know they said Latin American Spanish server, but I hope it really is the Latin America Spanish; the Castilian variety wold throw me for a bit of a loop.

Wow, was quite funny seeing the translations, but there are some that are incorrect

 

I'd change Alcance to Arqueria [Ranged]

Fletching is currently Arqueria, not sure what to put there

Dungeoneering is Mazmorras [Which means Dungeons], so I'd change it to Mazmorreria

Firemaking is Dominio del Fuego (Fire's dominion), so... Yeah

Arcane Spirit Shield is Escudo Espiritual Esoterico, I'd change to Escudo Espiritual Arcano

Tricker got translate to malandro, which is pretty much a street robber, not sure if that one's correct but it just made me laugh.

Armadyl page is Armadyl pagina, should be Pagina de Armadyl

Wilstalker helm is Almete acechador salvaje, no words on that one L

Could be, but it doesn't make sense to put it like that, since that means 'lighting fire' or so

I've always wondered why Brazilian Portuguese existed before Spanish. It has to do with demographics, I imagine. There are fewer RuneScape players in China, so even though more people speak the language, there's less demand. I think they did Portuguese before Spanish because more of the people who speak Spanish also speak English already...or something like that.

I must be missing something here. RuneScape has been localised in French, German, and Brazilian Portugese, which should make Latin American Spanish the fourth localization, not the fifth. Unless they count either English or that there is a version of the website (not game) in Dutch.

GE searches do not require that you search for the first part of an items name anyway, so I don't see how that would help :P.

 

Anyway wooot, going to play right away. Maybe I'll learn Spanish :D.

Grammatically that isn't correct. Pagina de Armadyl make more sense since well, when they search for it they'll be typing it in as Pagina de...

It would be the equivalent of saying house white or ball bouncy in English, it may make searching a particular database easier but translation is more about immersion and feeling at ease in one's native tongue rather than ease of use.

Off topic I know, but as native Spanish speakers, what is the thing that bothers you THE MOST when non native speaker use Spanish. Kinda curious since I know I butcher a ton of stuff.

Pretty much when people use words such as "nacho", "ole", "bueno", or just add o to the end of each word to "make it sound spanish". Or when people use phrases/features characteristic of certain spanish speaking countries as a whole, when talking to people who speak spanish (like people who says "nacho" when speaking to someone who isn't from mexico, etc...). Basically, how ignorant most non-spanish speaking people are towards spanish speaking people and how incredibly racist it sounds when they try hard, and fail horribly at it.

 

As for the quick chat system, haven't tried yet, will do tonight tho.

Spanish is my second language, not first, but I fully expected odd, awkward translations. I've never really met any Brits in or out of the game that had any knowledge of Hispanic language or culture. I was thinking they'd go with Castillian at first, but then I noticed a RSOF thread measuring interest for this sort of server, and the responses were clearly from Latin Americans. That said, however, unless they've recruited more employees from the Americas (I say "Americas" because I'm referring to anyone speaking Spanish in North and South America), I say I'm not surprised they're still fumbling.

 

The only other thing is that Spanish is not completely the same throughout the Americas, either. I don't exactly have a lot of faith in Jagex to choose what might be considered "standard" Latin American Spanish... or what the majority of their Spanish-speaking players will agree on. We'll see, right?

 

Right now I'm looking at the website and the wiki in Spanish... my translation skills aren't that good by comparison, but it seems so clunky.
