I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the strange looking NPC in one of the screenies. It looks like a mermaid with legs.

Isn't a mermaid with legs just a normal human?

The one in the screen shot, and the mermaids from the quests, have different colored skin so I'm going with no.

They did mention in live QAs and such about shores of Eastern lands being home to many of the big mythological sea creatures like Kraken, Siren's etc.

Given her colouring does see slightly off from other mermaids, assuming it's not a racial thing (like humans skin tone), I'd wager she falls into the Siren category as Siren and Mermaid are very similar.

We already know what Sirens look like.

[hide=Remember Remora?]B1xEW.png[/hide]

I say they're almost identical from their physical traits. It's a siren.

(Mermaids and Sirens aren't very similar at all btw. The only common thread between them is the habitat and the female appearance--or half appearance in the case of mermaids. And the fact that they're mythological.)

In some folklore, mermaids are associated with floods and storms and are responsible for just as many shipwrecks as sirens.

btw - have you ever noticed how many dangerous mythological creatures are female? Sirens, mermaids, the Medusa, fairies/pixies (admittedly more mischievous than anything), succubi, banshees, etc... Ancient story writers certainly had a low opinion of the fairer sex.

Remora was a mermaid, confirmed in lore.

And whilst mythology do vary many depict Siren's as essentially a singing mermaid.

If anything Remora only supports mermaids and sirens being one in the same.

It's important to note that most of those quoted monsters come from western traditions, which even before Christianity had lots if mysongyny problems. At any rate sirens and mermaids are similar in that they prey on the sexual desires of sailors when they are away from their significant others.

hope this clears up some things with the whole sirens/mermaids issue

The 10th century encyclopedia Suda says that from their chests up Sirens had the form of sparrows, below they were women, or, alternatively, that they were little birds with women's faces. Birds were chosen because of their characteristic, beautiful voices. However, later in history Sirens were sometimes also depicted as beautiful women (whose bodies, not only their voices, are seductive), or even as mermaids (half woman, half fish). The fact that in some languages (such as Spanish, French, Italian, Polish or Portuguese) the word for mermaid is Siren, Sirène, Sirena, Syrena or Sereia adds to this confusion. In English however, "Siren" does not commonly denote "mermaid".

It seems that through history sirens have had many interpretations, but were at some point depicted as mermaids, all depends on what depiction Jagex decide to take there lore

This site discusses the origin of both words/creatures if anyone is interested

Remora was a mermaid, confirmed in lore.

There are conflicting reports on her race, then. Her race is actually listed separately as a Siren on the official RS wiki and it was created by Mod Michelle.

1xR3p.png

Mind you the lore also calls Remora step-sister when talking about the other mermaids. Still don't think they would make mermaid & siren the same race, otherwise why wouldn't it be listed as mermaid in Remora's entry? She might be a halfbreed I guess. Or an error with the lore. Wouldn't be the first retcon they did, and this article stub was made after the lore entry.

Mind you the lore also calls Remora step-sister and never directly refers to her as mermaid. I still believe this best indicates that sirens and mermaids are different in RS, since there's more evidence labeling her as Siren than mermaid.

hhmm good point.

Makes you wonder how she became a 'step-sister' to the 3 mermaids. Suggests a biracial connection of sorts; though of course it is possible mermaid vs siren is going to be a minor race thing.

Eg Mermaids are akin to white humans whilst sirens are asian humans.

To be fair, a lot of these have male counterparts, mermen, male fairies (Cosmo), incubi, not to mention that there are plenty of purely male mythological beasts.

Depending on your source pop culture for fantasy creatures pits sirens and mermaids together. I think this might be the case with jagex. Your typical mythological siren would be more appropriately called a harpie based on looks.

I've read somewhere, forgot the source that a siren is an evil mermaid that lures sailors to there death with her song, a mermaid though does not lure sailors to there death, although I've read somewhere else that a siren is part bird, not part fish...so many contrasting accounts make it hard to be 100% clear the difference between sirens and mermaids (if there is indeed any), knowing Jagex they will probably combine sirens and mermaids into one species, which as urza said seems commonplace in most pop culture dealing with mythological creatures

People really need to understand the fundamental problem of bots is not really solvable.

Just asking them to do something isn't useful because there really isn't a solution. It continually happens because every "fix/solution" provided gets worked around.

Don't talk about bots here. There is a thread on this. I don't want a good speculative conversation derailed over bot discussion.

Bot programs and communities are highly adaptive by nature and that's the best answer you will find. If you want to discuss it go here:

I am slightly surprised no one has mentioned how the mechanics of the ports work in both use and attraction of the captains. Now I'm sure it won't be exactly like this, but I would imagine that ports might be something much like how we built our jadinko habitats. Now I'm sure it won't have a pay option obviously. But I would imagine that the better your port and ships are built the more productive your workforce might be at obtaining the things you desire.

Edit: that depth comment would be a slight reference to how the borrow mechanics from past successful game content.

Edit 2: I would imagine that, for example, max production would be 110% (get the pun? Give it your all plus some). Suppose a chart house gives you initially 5% production increasing with better builds to maybe 30%. Next you'd be looking at a lighthouse to keep lookout for treacherous paths vac into the port giving 4% initially all the way up to 20%. After that you might want to build a dock which starts at 10% going to 30%. Then depending on what your boats been equipped with might determine the last 30%. Of course this is a simple concept and could be compounded with the types of crew or where your headed.

Definitely looking forward to this update! Does anyone know what you can get on the Herblore side?

No one knows anything. I would speculate more time specific potions like the overloads. Prayer renewal and antifire potions.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be?~ Marianne Williamson
