Elf City Batch 2 - FAQ

The loot of the Elf Workers is really underwhelming. Would it be possible to discuss, with the players, the chance to change the current loot in future for more suitable loot for the high requirements to thieve these elves?

Mod Osborne: – We are in the process of discussing the loot. We’ve got a meeting booked and we’ll be hammering out our plans! In the meantime, your ideas of drops on the tables would be valuable. Essentially, the problem exists because the skill focuses of the elf clans do not lend themselves to common but desirable items that can be given out via pickpocketing. Agility, Herblore, Summoning, Prayer and particularly Dungeoneering have few items that would be desirable, suitable and robust enough to keep a decent value on the Grand Exchange.

Why was it decided that we can't gild a Crystal pickaxe or make an Imcando version?

Mod Stu: Only a crystal hatchet and pickaxe were commissioned for this project.

Could we obtain a version of the Crystal hatchet and pickaxe Lady Ithell mentions that does degrade and cannot be stored to our toolbelt, but does not require a Dragon hatchet or pickaxe? This way, poor players can access the new level 70 pickaxe/hatchet that requires constant maintenance but is afforable for them.

Mod Stu: We made an exception for the hatchet and pickaxe, in order to accommodate player demand for the next tier for these items. Crystal items are generally degradeable, and we don’t plan to deviate from this rule again. The dragon hatchet and pickaxe were used as the “seed” of this item in order to retain their value, and having a cheaper alternative would impact their value.[/b]

Could we sacrifice our Dragon equipment in order to create Crystal weapons and armour that does not degrade? If this can be done with the Dragon hatchet and pickaxe, surely it works with other Dragon equipment, allowing us to make, for instace, non-degradeable Crystal halberds, daggers and battle staves.

Mod Osborne: I don’t feel this is the right answer to a common problem that players have: that the weapons are not a feasible alternative to chaotics and other similarly levelled items. It’s something that we are discussing, and you should see our plan on the forums soon. I believe there are better – and simpler – answers to the problem than contributing dragon items.[/b]

Why does Copernicus Glyph tell us he forgot which champion is for which god, when he states in earlier dialogue to the elves that he came here to build the statue of their queen?

Mod Rowley: He’s a forgetful gnome.

Now that Prifddinas itself has been completed, what other elven updates will you work on? We know that there will be Seren spells and prayers, as well as a Tirannwn task set, but are there other Elven updates that we expect to be released in the nearby future?

Mod Osborne: The Elf City was decided largely by you guys, so it’s important that you get a say in what you want improved or changed. That’s the stage we’re at now – deciding what should be changed, forming a forum post to tell you, and then bringing the changes out over the weeks or in one larger batch of changes. You’ll hear more this week. These changes are separate from the Task Set, coming out this year, and the spells and prayers, which will be out next year.

Why is there no recipe that combine the effects of a Super Defence potion and either Super Ranged or Magic potion to create a Ranged/Magic equivalent of a Super Melee Potion? It's quite unfair that meleers can have all of their combat potions in one inventory space, but mages and rangers can not.

Mod Hunter: There’s no specific reason for that. It wasn’t a potion type that was cut from initial designs, just wasn’t a potion type considered.
Mod Osborne: I have added it to the list of potential additions. It is a good feedback point.

Why did Bilrach/the Dragonkin build two resource dungeons beneath Prifddinas?

Mod Osborne: Think of the resource dungeons as warehouses created by Bilrach, then tossed away to areas that people wouldn’t care to look, to keep them secure. Most of the time, these warehouses are locations in Daemonheim that Bilrach then throws to the winds. Other times, he opens a portal to other locations and uses them as a pre-fab warehouse. The Elf City ‘warehouses’ were both from Daemonheim originally. The 95 resource dungeon is a warped floor, I believe, while the 115 resource dungeon is – like the Daemonheim fortress itself – a dragonkin construction.

Through the Voice of the Elders, we learn the first names of the current Clan Elders, with the exceptions of Lord Crwys and Lady Trahaearn. What are their first names?

Mod Osborne: Lord Crwys is Piquan, and Lady Trahaearn is Tangwen

Lady Hefin's page of the Voice of the Elders speaks about light creatures and their unnamed creator race. What was the race called? Can we learn more about this mysterous race in the future?

Mod Osborne: Perhaps. No plans at the moment!

Can you remove Rune items from the Motherload Maw reward List? They aren't really "good" rewards which are meant to help those going for a Completionist cape.

Mod Osborne: It was never our intention to make EVERY drop a completionist cape item. That said, we’re in discussion with balancing about the drops, as there has been a great deal of feedback on the shard drop table in particular.
Mod Hunter: While the maw is aimed to help with completionist requirements and has certain weightings towards requirements you need, it offers no guarantees of giving exactly what is needed, fitting largely with the chaotic nature of the maw and having non-completionist related rewards available is a necessity for balance.

Does the new Blood necklace upgrade work like a Ring of Recoil?

Mod Osborne: Yes and no. If It worked purely like a ring of recoil it would not be able to activate if you were using ranged and magic without being under attack. As such, it has a chance to activate both when you attack and defend, with an appropriate cooldown between activation periods.

Are the shadows found in the Divination section formerly part of the Dark Lord?

Mod Rowley: No, they are light creatures that were corrupted by the Dark Lord. At least, that’s what Lord Amlodd believes if you talk to him about them.

Aren't the XP rates for serenity posts and harps rather OP?

Mod Osborne: We’ve had just as many comments that the XP from these two skilling areas is not enough. We’re inclined to think that the harps and posts are about right, while other skilling plots might receive a tweak.

Why is the Hefin course just one route all over again? Why not different routes instead of shortcuts, like with the Dorgesh-Kaan course?

Mod Osborne: Shortcuts and velocity do enough to deviate from the traditional agility course. Adding alternate routes would be one mechanic too many.

What is the purpose of velocity? It saves one click every two laps.

Mod Rowley: You’ve answered your own question there.

Are the Voice of Elders volumes the lore books you announced or is there more stuff like the books from Lletya?

Mod Rowley: This is what I meant when I’ve mentioned it.

With Crystal teleport seeds containing so many destinations now, why is the selection still a scroll-through dialogue box instead of a big, single list like the Games necklace?

Mod Osborne: The simple answer is time. I have added it to a potential list of future changes.

What is the advantage of killing a stronger Edimmu (can randomly spawn) that is 3 times stronger than a normal one, when it hardly gives more XP than the normal ones? Does it give a better chance to receive a Blood necklace as a drop?

Mod Hunter: It has a much higher chance of dropping the blood necklace shard, and drops less of the other drops meaning its regular drops are also more valuable on average. The stronger version is also the only way to get the Edimmu pet, although that’s still a rare drop!

Any chance of a non-degrading, or at least more charges, teleport seed?

Mod Osborne: I am afraid not.

Will a way to obtain Dungeoneering and Slayer (excluding Elf assignments) Golden rocks within the city be implemented?

Mod Osborne: We debated the idea of giving golden rocks in the resource dungeons for non-Dungeoneering tasks, but it felt erroneous. You can gain slayer rocks by killing elves, shadows and edimmus on-task.

Why did you bother putting a Bloodwood tree in the Elf City when they've been dead content since prior to EoC's release?

Mod Osborne: It’s a nice visual focal point for the dungeon, and many players felt like they would use the bloodwood tree if it was more accessible, which it is now. And you never know – a bakriminel improvement may come in the future!

Why do people with 120 Dungeoneering or 200m experience have to grind through some more dungeons in order to get the recipes?

Mod Hunter: They’re the most common with 120 or 200m, but the recipes weren’t intended to be particularly common to find. Access to the motherload maw (which now gives a higher chance of finding recipes) and consistent yak cards from the level 95 dungeon also make it easier for higher levels to obtain recipes without doing as many dungeons.
Mod Osborne: We’re discussing the rarity, particularly the way that Dungeoneering levels affect it. More news soon.

What updates have been made to the pre-existing part 1 of the Elf City?

Mod Osborne: A full list pf Batch 1 patch notes can be found in Recent Updates.

Why don't the Crystal sandstone mines use new graphics? They are Crystal!

Mod Osborne: We want to update these, but it may be some weeks before we find the time.

Is the function to climb the clan towers scrapped or delayed?

Mod Osborne: Currently scrapped. It may become merely ‘delayed’ if we get to add the Tower Chimes.

Will the seren memories still get voiced in the future?

Mod Rowley: Yes

Why didn't you make it possible to see the amount of laps completed?

Mod Rowley: - We have now. Roll over the checkpoint counter.

Why is the Gorajo, who gives out a daily card, also at Daemonheim?

Mod Hunter: The gorajo has a fascination with the experiences of those who use his cards. Those used within Daemonheim have particularly caught his interest, enough that he’s willing to travel to make it easier for you to use them.
Mod Osborne: We thought you would appreciate the ability to gain the cards at Daemonheim, rather than travel to Prifddinas once a day

Are you planning to add talk options to various amount of elves in the city?

Mod Osborne: Not at the moment. The amount of work to add meaningful chat options is crazy across multiple disciplines – editing, localisation, QA, development. That’s not to say that we won’t do it, but it’s currently unlikely.

Why is Construction so neglected to the point where we can't even get a Priff-style tileset or a graphical update for our player-owned houses? Or even a new room?

Mod Hunter: From a technical standpoint PoH were created a long time ago, with greater limitations than we have now. While creating a different tileset sounds like it would be a small update, it would actually require every possible room to be copied, updated and plugged into the Construction code. Similarly with a graphical update just updating all of those assets alone is a huge job, and building them to current standards would also have issues, especially where it comes to the heights of ceilings and such. Even for a project as large as the elf city, these are much too time consuming to involve.

New rooms would be more likely to be added, however with recent talks of reworks to Construction as a whole it doesn’t seem worthwhile until the scope and possibilities of that project are known.
Mod Osborne: We’re talking about a choice between a whole elf clan and a new look to your POH. Hopefully, a construction rework would make this disproportionate cost a thing of the past.

Roughly, what are the chances of finding a recipe during Dungeoneering?

Mod Hunter: The base chance to spawn is equivalent to 5 large dungeons, or 320 rooms. This increases slightly for each level below 120.
Mod Osborne: As mentioned before, we are looking into this – in particular, how the chance increases as you get higher Dungeoneering levels. More info soon.

Will Construction be given ways to be trained within the city, whilst not counting the PoH portal that is there?

Mod Osborne: I think a lot of people were looking for a non-expensive, potentially even free method of training Construction for long periods. Unfortunately, this would mean undermining the entire skill’s design. It was intended, from the ground up, to be a gold sink.

Will Farming be given a more reliable way to get Golden rocks during the Voice of Seren, such as guaranteeing growth and safety of some plants?

Mod Rowley: No. Your best bet is to plant things that produce a large quantity of crops, which may well mean allotment patches outside of Prifddinas are still the most reliable method.

Which sector's Voice of Seren are non-Crwys sector patches in Prifddinas affected by?

Mod Osborne: The farming patch in Meilyr is affected by the Meilyr Voice of Seren. The Trahaearn patch is affected by the Trahaearn Voice of Seren, and so on.

Why is there no cape rack for the elf clan capes?

Mod Osborne: We are looking into adding this.

Would you consider rebalancing the tiny extra 2 points from the Supreme Overload potions? It doesn't really justify their use.

Mod Hunter: I’d primarily expect them to be used where you really need the boost, such as in bossing. We’re wary of the impact going too large on boosts will have, so have no plans to go higher at the moment.
Mod Osborne: I can understand the desire to get to a nice, round 120, but it’s not something we are looking to do for the reasons above.

Is there a way to increase your chances of receiving a recipe from Dungeoneering?

Mod Hunter: Using the perfect herblore potion gives a 10% higher chance of a recipe spawning. A consistent yak card guarantees a recipe will spawn.

Why can you not fail Hefin course obstacles? That's a great opportunity for hilarious animations.

Mod Osborne: Imagine the stacks of bodies at the bottom of the mountain! It would be terrible!

How were the elves able to smuggle things out of Daemonheim (Motherload Maw, Plants, Edimmu)?

Mod Osborne: You could say the same about a number of items from previous resource dungeons – the frost dragon drops, etc. It seems the resource dungeons are not as strictly limited.

Why aren't all of the emote options for the Serenity posts in alphabetical order?

Mod Stu: They’re in the order that the sprites were drawn. At the time I made the emotes work, it hadn’t been decided what they’d be called.

Why can't we pick up Anagogic Orts when playing the Harp? It is really inconvenient having to click away and stop what we're doing just to pick up the Orts, instead of being able to pick them up from the same spot.

Mod Stu: Your hands are too full of harp to pick up other things. While playing a harp, you keep performing the action to sync up with the harp and audio, and switch seamlessly back from tuning to playing. You’ll need to step off the harp to perform other actions.

Are there any plans to buff Edimmu's Slayer XP since they have more LP than Celestial dragons(which give more XP)?

Mod Osborne: We will be looking into this, as we have received a lot of feedback about it

The musician songs added with Batch 2 are all great, in part because of how flavourful they are. Can more songs like this be produced?

Mod Bond: I believe we have every intention of doing so…! blk.gif

What are the compost-filled and supercompost-filled plant pots used for, since tree seeds aren't diseased while in pots and their yields aren't affected by compost?

Mod Osborne: Our bad! We’ve added a fix for this, which should be going live soon.

Could the Perfect Dungeoneering Juju potion also provide a boost to finding a Dungeoneering journal on a floor?

Mod Hunter: It makes sense, I don’t see why not!
Mod Osborne: I’ll add it to our list of potential changes!

Why can't players use Potion Flask potions to make the new Crystal Flask potions?

Mod Hunter: Decanting NPCs will soon be able to decant 5 and 6 dose flasks back into vials if you wish to use them, so using flasks directly won’t be necessary!

How rare are the 3 parts of Penny the Pet from the Shadow creatures? Can we get all 3 pieces from the same type of Shadow or does 1 piece drop from each type?

Mod Rowley: You need to get one part from each type of shadow creature. The parts are very rare. It’s 1/1000 from the higher level shadows, for example.

This was the perfect opportunity to make Barbarian potions useful by increasing their LP healed and making them flask-able. Why didn't you do this?

Mod Hunter: The offset cost to barbarian potions healing was them being in smaller doses than other potions. The values they heal can probably be looked at to make sure it’s useful, but it’s unlikely they’ll ever be made available in flasks.
Mod Rowley: We had enough to do with juju, skilling and combination potions. Barbarian potions were outside project scope.

Why wasn't there a Super Summoning potion added?

Mod Hunter: A summoning potion wasn’t included in the original designs, and wasn’t noticed in feedback on any iterations. It seems as though it wouldn’t be that popular of an item, but could be considered if there’s enough interest.
Mod Osborne: When we were determining the list of combination potions, we made forum posts and asked you for the ones you wanted. Summoning simply didn’t come up often enough to get added.

What happened to the clan that may not entirely be made up of elves?

Mod Osborne: This was originally intended to be the Trahaearn, as we were considering making them all automata. It became a little dark as a storyline, and we instead decided to only include the automata with the god statues.

What happened to Crystal chimes?

Mod Stu: If you mean Tower Chimes, Mod Osborne answers this above. If you mean crystal chimes, the Path of Glouphrie chime still exists, and can be reverted to seed or attuned to saw at the singing bowl. You can also make a nicer-looking crystal chime from a tool seed, though it’s functionally identical.

What happened to Rhiannon returning to life after the Max Guild statue is rebuilt?

Mod Osborne: Like the Tower Chimes, this fell by the wayside as development was ongoing. We still want to do it, and we know exactly what the story will be, so there may be more news in the future.

How was Arianwyn unaware that Prifddinas had reverted to Crystal seed prior to the events of Within the Light?

Mod Osborne: Perhaps he wanted to keep it secret from you until he could truly trust you.

They seemed to have ignored half of the important questions and answered a bunch of silly questions instead. I don't feel they really properly addressed anything except saying they'll 'look into a few things'.

One person in my clan got all 9 recipes from 1 attempt at the MAW (he just kept on re clicking after each recipe), like a day or two ago. Ridiculous.

Oh man. And I thought my friend's 4-in-a-row was ridiculous.

But yeah, it seems like you can't get another go at the maw anymore, if you got a recipe from it.

i don't get how their project management works anymore. are they hiring contractors or something? what's this about "commissioning" content? is this game just going to be one lopsided jigsaw puzzle now?

also lol at how all those skills that people voted for turned half of elf city into dead content

"well, we know the players want these skills represented because of various design reasons that players want to correct, but we can't give it to them because runescape is married to every single poor decision that has been made about it, so let's just let them choose it and then do absolutely nothing with it, it'll save us time and we can claim we did more work than what we actually planned"

"with this new polling system, this also allows us to entirely avoid responsibility for these poor design choices because we basically baited players into choosing them with the illusion that anybody in this process ever had free will"

It's called a win-win. Too bad it's a lose-lose from our perspective.

I really do feel as though instead of having only public voting, runescape should have some sort of a player-'government' consisting of elected and chosen members (about 30-50 of them) to advise jagex on the balancing and general direction of content. But meh...

I do realize there would be issues to overcome to make something like that work but there would also be clear and distinct difference between a normal democratic government and this sort of arrangement- they wouldn't have any actual power, they wouldn't be getting any direct benefits (except for, say, a chat badge) for doing it and you'd also be able to just blame them for everything.

Of course the point that will train wreck it is you cannot even remotely hope to represent a playerbase on thousands upon thousands with different play styles, cultures and priorities with only a handful of people.

Plus of course the 'elected' and 'choosen' would inevitably be the youtuber/famous players that are really really unrepresentative of the community as a whole.

^or simply high level players, which are not representive of the community as well. And it is impossible to keep a team of low level players, as they become medium leveled players quickly, which become high level players a while after that. Meaning you would need a constant change in team members. Not to account for the amount of people wanting to be in the team, creating lots of spam and frustration of other users.

The elected and chosen was meant to say that some would definitely be popular players chosen my the masses (likely top pagers/streamers), but there would be a nice balance to them being chosen to represent every sub-community (for example, tif) aswell. It's also naive to think you need to be low leveled to represent low leveled players, neither do you need to be homeless to represent those that are...

Ah yes of course - because it will work so much better when Jagex randomly selects players for no real reason who have no support base behind them and then automatically assumes these people represent the entire subsection of the community they were selected from with no real evidence of such.

If anything that method is worse because it's like dunking your hand into some M&Ms getting and green one and therefore concluding all M&Ms are green because thats what random chance caused you to select.

No one player can speak for any major subsection of the community accurately - about the only place it'd work is with clans where 1 clan leader can understand/know what the clan as a whole would like, but even then it gets a bit strained when clan sizes get up into triple digits.

I've never suggested random selection. More in terms of different election groups: one group being picked by the whole community (likely a power to the players poll) and another being picked by separate runescape communities (like tif), maybe even a few top clans. The point is that as of right now, jagex is basically crowdsourcing ideas off of everyone, and those ''everyone'' are a random group of people. I'd like them to channel their focus to a more select group, being based on atleast some substance.

But even if we 'elect' one person from each community it doesnt cover the entire player base and it doesn't even cover the whole community.

Just look through half of gen discussions and you can easily see 'tif' does not have 1 unified set of views or priorities even if you just look at the big name regulars.

Everyone having a voice works nicely to give all equal chance, especially with the runelabs system due next year to help player suggestions work through a framework to be given dev focus.

Plus look at all the ninja fixes that come directly from player feedback.

Sure everyone may be a random group of people, but it's advantage is everyone includes everyone - every playstyle, every voice every priority is represented. A select of random does not.

Sure everyone may be a random group of people, but it's advantage is everyone includes everyone - every playstyle, every voice every priority is represented. A select of random does not.

I think tif has a unified voice, I think we can all agree that "some things probably definitely kind of suck most/none/part/all of the time but all the other times they're somewhat extremely ok sort of"

R.I.P. The olde nite. A legend is gone but not forgotten.

It's also naive to think you need to be low leveled to represent low leveled players, neither do you need to be homeless to represent those that are...

Even if there's literally nothing but precedent for the opposite? I haven't really seen many high level players do so much as acknowledge that lower-levels exist, let alone have interests that are worthy of being represented. And Jagex currently seems to believe that tweaking completionist requirements is higher-priority than fixing blatantly unbalanced and useless content... I wonder where they got that idea.

Really, you're asking the wealthy what it's like to be homeless and expecting the answer to be anything but inaccurate.

Ask someone who runs a large clan with an average total level that is sufficiently low.  They should know if they're halfway competent.

^that sounds nice in theory, but in practice it can become really nasty, just look at politics arounds the world.

And in my opinion your idea is naive. I think there are to many pitfalls for it to work, and the chances that it will backfire are just to big. Although it doesn't really matter if we think it will work, what matters is if jagex will ever implement such thing as you described, which I doubt :P

The main reason i would even be suggesting something like this is, contrary to what sy describes as a well oiled machine, i see as a disgraceful mix between nepotism and russian ''democracy'' when it comes to a large portion of player feedback to mods. And this comes from years of experience and knowing someone who had very close relations to a number of jagex mods (and his suggestion was actually turned into the duelling arena). The ninja fixes are a great example, actually. If you carefully look at many of them over time, you can see that there are specific themes where the interest of a few is being served in order to accomplish trivial things. All this accomplishes is, as we have seen over the years, is that the mods have an extremely skewed and simplistic view of the game, which is why i don't think they should be picking the part of the community they will listen. ''Power to the players'' hasn't improved the situation one bit.

To the low leveled argument, you could also argue that someone who has an university degree shouldn't be teaching a first grader but then again... Sure, you can't decide whether they should be taught, but what and how? sure.

On the contrary I would have to disagree with that.  The more knowledge and experience you have, the better a teacher you will be.  Maybe you could argue that they shouldn't design the curriculum, but I think any school would have to be crazy to take a high school dropout over someone with an Education PhD to teach first graders (as an example).

In some examples, yes, if someone has to much knowledge they are not able to teach the students the information in the correct way. The students wouldn't understand what the teacher is saying. Of course the teacher should have more information than the students. But I don't think the analogy really fits the problem.

Also we were promised a better power to the player, in the way that we can vote for ideas of other players. I assume that some of the issues will be fixed by that.
