This is a ridiculous rule. I typically either play RS on a decent computer that has a dial-up connection or on an old, somewhat weak computer that has DSL.

Far too many of these ads are Flash-based. Several others have constant motion which annoys me. Not only that, but a large majority of them are completely unrelated to the game. Who wants to enter a dating service or buy a mortgage when they're playing a game? Not I. Thus I block the ads, using the HOSTS file(which is a built-in part of windows).

On the decent computer on dial-up, loading the flash ads cause a signifigant lag. On the DSL computer, the flash-based ads take up far to much resources to let RS run properly. Even if I move them out of the screen, they still take up enough resources to mess up RS.

If my f2p accounts get banned when I play them for ad-blocking, I will complain, but I will keep in mind that it was a F2P account. However... if my P2P main gets blocked for this reason... I'll quit. No sense in playing a game if the makers ban a LEGITIMATE PAYING CUSTOMER for blocking their horrid adverts.

how do they detect you blocking their ad? illegally impost web bugs or scan your cookies?

i will still block them with zone alarm untill some nice mod can spot me blocking their ads and report me...

Forget that, I'm not lowering the security on Zone Alarm Pro or my IE security everytime I go on the main RS page, I've got it running on maximum security, theres no way I'm lowering it just to keep Jagex happy. had to pay out ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã60 to get my PC reformated after getting some spyware from an advert on a major companys website, I'm not risking that again just because Jagex has decided to add a lame rule.

They hardly do anything about scammers, so why punish people who don't want their PC riddled full of spyware? How about they go after the players that are ruining this game, instead of the people who just want to keep their PC secure.

Anyway, why should I have to pay for all my free accounts, just so I don't have to turn down my firewall, I already pay for my main account, that should allow me to disable their laggy dating agency adverts if I want to.

this is a really stupid rule, i understand it. but for people who have anti virus that blocks the ads, this means.. that u will now have to unblock ur ad blocking which may bring up pop up adverts !! which are so annoying in my case.

Eh, I have norton security package. I have NO ads what so ever. If JAGeX is going to whine when I get on their free servers and not play thier ads I DONT CARE. I pay 5 bucks like any joe here with members, and I dont think I should have to deal with it. They dont seem to realize that thier ads eat bandwith or uses tons of processor power, or maybe they do and they really dont care. I agree they DO need to tell us such things.

Then dont play the game :D As soon as Jagex started to make money they went with the flow and its gonna be like that until Jagex well is over.

Thats a good point - they might be just saying this to keep the advertisers happy, and dont actualy care if we block the ads or not. Depends if they are pay-per-click or pay per month.

This may have been done to satisfy the companies buying the advertising, to make the space more valuable. It's probably less about the actual advertising.

that would make sense why they didn't announce it.....

i REALLY doubt they can detect you blocking ads without putting very illegal stuff on your pc.

Unless the adverts and the game itself somehow 'talked' to each other? I'm sure they could set something like that up. A bit of code that checked to see if the advert was there on the page should be possible for them, although i believe the advert is in a seperate iframe, which might complicate it. nothing would surprise me though.

i think they are just working there way to what i think is the only real way they can enforce using no third party clients. which would be making everyone use a downloadable jagex produced rs client.

i dont want to start up a huge debate or flame fest over this but how can they not consider ie and firefox 3rd party clients when they do __________(not mentioning the "illegal client name") even though if you break them down all 3 are only different webbrowsers and if set up properly you can make firefox work pretty much the same as the client that they ban everyone for.

within six months i bet were gonna have a rule 16. You must use the approved jagex produced rs client.

Still i block them no matter what...

Seeing as the official Runescape makers and Jagex visit these forums, (hiddenly) don't rant if you get banned.

Come to think of it, Jagex is the first company ive seen "publicly" stating not to block adverts in their site...

Ive also seen waaaay bigger internet based companies who rely on adverts for revenue, and they dont care about ad blocking...

It boggles my mind... :wall:

i do not understand this, there cant be a logical way to tell if your blocking ads without jagex installing some sort of "Spyware" thereself. that just doesnt make sense.

There are two ways adverts are being paid for, either you get paid per person that clicks the ad, or you simply get paid for the fact company X has there ad on your website. With jagex, i think it is the latter, that's why they didn't announce it.

Jagex will probably have made a deal with the company's that host these ads, to add a rule forbidding the blocking of these ads, in exchange for more money. it's the only reason i can think of that jagex didn't announce it with a huge article on there front page.

Right now, i think about 5% or less of the runescape population will know about this rule, and even less will abide by it.

Jagex has just put that rule there to make both the ad hosting company's happy, and there own wallet. They will not enforce this rule, i think, because of two reasons:

1) they can't

2) they don't give a flying if you block there ads or not, they'll get paid anyway.
