michiel2
I totally agree! I don't read posts with bad grammar, and Tip.it helped me so much with English, one of the reasons English is one of my best subjects. :D By the way, Dutch is my native language. Don't quote me if I used any wrong grammar. 8-) At least, I think that.
Ragen
I think that people should take the time to at least try and make their posts easy to read. When people don't use commas, I can read it, but when people type out their posts in ALL CAPS or without any full stops at all - That annoys me. Also things like putting capitals at the start of a sentence isn't too difficult is it? Chat speak is ok, sometimes; but when someone writes in chat all the time, it becomes unreasonable. BlueLancer
If you do not read a post based off of Spelling and grammar, then you are pre judging the poster, and anyone that knows me on the bored, knows that i dislike pre-judging. Oh wait, they dont, cause no one reads my posts, cause they have bad spelling/grammar? Nope, but just because you have a good point, it doesn't mean your text is bearable (not talking particularly about you but everybody else too). Even if you could prove Einstein's e=mc2 wrong, without a coherent body of text, it looks like a pile of trash. A stack of tiles is not a house just because it has the same materials A disorderly mob is no more an army than a heap of building materials is a hut The same applies to text. No, of course I don't 'insult' or look down upon people who simply can't spell. Many of my good friends have horrible spelling. But correct wording and avoiding unnecessary mistakes IS needed if you seriously want to say something you want others to comment and add to. I totally agree! I don't read posts with bad grammar, and Tip.it helped me so much with my English, one of the reasons English is one of my best subjects. :D By the way, Dutch is my native language. SirHartlar
I try to use as much good grammar and spelling as possible, because I know it helps other people read my posts. Everyone makes mistakes though, so I don't immediately get on someones back because two letters were the wrong way round.
____
The only times I really take notice of peoples use of english is when they're trying to get a point across - especially in debate topics. If they're failing at forming basic sentences then I'm really not going to take their post(s) seriously. And a real spelling nazi I came across was, ironically enough, in Battlefield 2 earlier today. My Squad Leader had just taken off in the attack heli, and he had the commander as gunner (why the commander took gunner instead of commanding is beyond me - damn noobs). I was his gunner of choice for the past 7 rounds, and for his sake I meant to send "I hope your got a good gunner there" via squad chat, but sent over team instead. And the gunner is all "what the hell is YOUR" followed up by a few replacement words which didn't make sense in place of it anyways. I HAD to follow up with: "I meant 'you' - idiot" Half the team sent 'lol' following that. Then he proceeded to spam my squad with the in-built put-downs :uhh: Seriously? Can people not recognise typo's when reading an entire sentence these days? End message: Reading and comprehension also useful. And generally a little bit more important overall. How2PK
You don't have to use big words to be grammatically correct :P Besides, it's usually better to skip posts with those huge words because they're just people massaging their ego. ;) I know it doesn't have to do with eachother. But often I see people using hard words, and I just think, you could've said it so much easier. Saves a lot of people time to look everything up. Just felt like saying it. :P Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!

cadburys_egg
I'd just rather not waste valuable seconds of my life translating someone's crappy sentences into English. Plus shorthand makes you look stupid. Really stupid... Win. But really I always look at a persons location before possibly telling them they've slaughtered the English language. If someone is unconfident or not sure of their English (assuming it's a second, third etc. language) should really state. Otherwies people assume they're English. I don't really mind about some spelling errors, but really you should check something before posting. Just tlkin lik dis makes u luk stupd n no1 wil tak u srsly. If you have a very limited character space to type a message in just either split it or shorten it as best without going chat speak. But forums generally don't have a character limit, or it's usually a very high one. One thing I don't like is people using words they don't know just so they will look smart, or even people putting "(sp?)". If you are unsure of spelling, use a word processing program to check or even just use an online spell checker. It doesn't take long.
Nadril
Usually I won't make a big deal about someones grammer (unless they have mutulated it beyond belief). @Darkrick: I had a simmular experience on Guild wars the other day. I was trying out a new Healing monk build, one that's purpose is to keep up enchantments on your team. Anyways, I got in an argument with a guy (running out of time here... gotta run to class) and I accidently typed "realy" instead of "really". The guy instantly brought that to my attention, of course, while the rest of my writing was plenty readable and in good grammer. But what can I say, I miss an "L" and he gets bent out of shape. Anesthesia
For me it isn't about intelligence; it's about courtesy. If you can't be bothered to make your post easy to read then I can't be bothered to read it. Making a post with terrible grammar is expecting your readers to do the work of making it readable so you don't have to - why should they? Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be. Kwisatz
Lionheart, you say that pasting something into Word to check it detracts from your posting experience. It's a matter of putting others before yourself. "Hmm, should I take 45 seconds, maximum, to do a simple spelling and grammar check and save everyone the trouble, or should I convey a bad impression?" Like I said, it's one thing if your first language isn't English or you are making a genuine effort that is still intelligible, there is no problem. However, if you routinely make mistakes that are easily correctable by Microsoft Word or don't bother to look a word up if you are unsure of the spelling, then that's just stupid. It's alright if you misspell something one, two, or even three times, but after that you should have at least took half a minute to go to dictionary.com and look it up for future reference. Humans have the ability to recognize their own shortcomings and correct them, and not doing so is a gross abuse of the sentience invested in us by our creator(s). I don't usually make a point of picking people on grammar unless it's either a) really bad or B) they have little ground to stand on in a petty argument. You would be the latter case. Perhaps if you made a subtle effort to improve your writing skills and didn't make such a big fuss over people picking you out then maybe people would stop. *EDIT: Just noticed this in your sig: I have beeten FFIX. I have learned to cherish life over everything. Date of beating, Aug. 16, 2006. You spelled the same word with two roots. Right next to each other. It's either beeten and beeteng or beaten and beating. That's a prime example. It's almost as though you have lingual memory loss or something... handed me TWO tissues to clear up. megadedhed
The only thing that I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t like is how some people just use "easiness of spellchecker" as an argument, believe it or not, spell checkers can make errors as well, (it kept trying to tell me the sentence "why, he needs to go eat cheese" should be "why, him needs to eat some cheese", S/G checker's don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t exactly look at context, so it can make grammar worse. Nadril
Also, I should add a bit to my point. I view it like this: You can have the damn best grammer in the world, not misspell a single thing and get every bit of punctuation correct, but, if your point doesn't make an ounce of sense or is just beyond idiotic your grammer won't help you. However, you can also have the damn best point in the world, something no one has ever thought up of before and is brilliantly explained. However, if you type it up in shorthand and have horrible grammer no one will take that point serriously, let alone be able to read it. The two go hand in hand. Yeah, if you just misspell a thing or two here and there, it's fine. Humans can make errors and i'm pretty sure there are those words that you "think" you have correct, but turn out wrong (or, a typo). Another point i'd like to make. If you are all judging people on their spelling and grammar (Which for you seems to equal another's intellegence) that is just plain wrong. Are you saying you are any better then those in special ed. classes? If you see them around the halls of your schools or on the streets, do you point them out and say "Hey, that person is less intellegent, lets make fun of him, and make him feel like a lower life form."? Aww muffin, am i asking for not even 2 seconds? Lion, you failed to see his point totaly. He did not say "I laugh at anyone who can not type properly" he said he judges them based off of it. Do I know handicapped people are not as smart as many of us? Yeah, I know that, I aknowledge that. I don't run around laughing at all of them. Either way, it was a bad analogy. The fact is is that most of us have the ability to type in a way others will be able to understand. If you have a middle school + education you should know how to spell most basic words and write in decent grammer. You see, I'm fairly sure you are a smart guy lionheart. As I've gotten in your posts, you want to be a teacher, which means you must enjoy learning (or just teaching others). Either way, i'm sure you have a good head on your shoulders. Not even going over what you wrote once is just lazy. I'm not telling you to open spellchecker each and every time you make a post, and make sure its 100% right. I'm talking about just reading it over when you are done typing and double checking to see if there are any big, obvious gapping holes in your writing. Either way, the fact is is that you are just lazy. Again using the special ed. kid's, most of them try very hard. Are there some slackers in it? Yeah, deffinitly. But for the most part the analogy was very weak, and wrong at that.

If i use spell cheack, that will not teach me how to spell anything. I need to be able to use a word in a sentence in order to learn how to use it, and if a program just gives me a correction, it wont work.
