Male vs. Female Vocals

Featured Replies

Depends purely on the artist/band.

Can't stand vocalists like the lass from evanescene, errgh. makes me cringe.

generally i like husky broken voices in singing. dunno why, just always been my thing 8-)

I tend to listen to more male vocalists

Of course, I'm going to say it depends on the song! :P

A lot of people have remarked on how a female vocal, like Enya, is so beautiful. That's very true, however, I'm also in the opinion that Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong have equally beautiful voices. ;)

That's what I said :) I think the warm, deep voice of a man is something that perfectly fits rock music and jazz/blues music. But a woman's voice is often a lot better in classical-ish pieces as they have to bear some kind of divinity. And if there's something divine in this world, it's women ;)

Yeah, I love the jazz-male vocalists too.

Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so.

Once again, it depends what kind of songs you're singing and the music you're playing. There are different types of good singers with different styles so it is still hard to judge the best, the most prefered and your personnal preferences at the same time.

Oe of my favorite bands is The Hush Sound whic incorporate both the female and male voice into the same songs and create great harmony. Ofcourse Amy Lee is one of the most popular and recognized. But did you know the girl in Paramore is only 16 and very attractive.

based on what I've herd... it seems more common for female vocalists to have bigger ranges, my band's bassist (a girl) can sing from death metal to angelic to even sounding like a guitar, but some male vocalists have insaine ranges as well. Incredible male vocalists are harder to find, but just a couple of my favorites list:

Mike Patton - Listen to "i started a joke" by faith no more, then follow with "midlife crisis" (same band), and egg by Mr. bungle to hear just a bit of his vocal power.

Manyard james Keenan - do I really need to say anything?

Rob Halford - the man who started the high pitched metal scream, but could also sing a deep and dark sound. "victem of changes" and "Painkiller" are good performances.

My preference has always been female vocals. The first song with (classical) female vocals that I enjoyed was, oddly enough, a rap song. I can't remember the name or the artists, but in between verses there were samples of a woman singing a part of the Russian opera Prince Igor. However, I *really* dislike female singers that sound, for lack of a better word, 'common' (think Amy Lee), or female vocals used wrongly.

Depends on so many factors. Song, pitch, genre, scene, band, etc.

Usually the problem with female vocals are that they often sound quite same, there's alot of exceptions, of course. Also, one major point is that female singers often stick with pop and country music, so their full voice scale is rarely being used.

with female leads, one which hits me is lacuna coil. I don't know why.

But with male singers there are alot of those whose singing makes you shiver in a good way - IMO my personal favourite is system of a down, their duet songs are just a delight for my ears.

yea, just flame me but I really also like robbie williams and tom jones. I think they still have awesome voices, whatever you may think about them. I still pity the states for their lack of robbie williams, he has sold like more than beatles in the europe, right [click for his duet with kylie minogue]

Also, Till lindemann (sp?) of Rammstein has such a cool voice too

I think you can't really what the overall best, because I couldn't imagine Evanescence with male vocals, neither would I hear Green Day sung by a female :?

I prefer female's since they're rarer and more of a specialty(but at the same time I don't want a lot of them since then the not so great females will ruin the purity of the select few who actually do make it into decent bands)

*points out the old NightWish to that female vocal list*

*cough* TARJA TURUNEN *cough*

Sorry bout that, I have a nasty cough today. It depends on the type of music. Rocker chicks are awesome. Not Arch Enemy grunty thing, like Lacuna Coil. Harder then most female voices :). Tarja Turunen of course *points at sig (duhhhh)* and Amy Lee is awesome. Overall I prefer female vocals (as long as its not that pop crap)

maxsig28nv.gif

I prefer good male voices over good female voices, if only because they're more distinct, at least in the genre of music I like. I can't honestly tell the difference on any given song between many female artists.

hey.. angella gossow has a real talent like that. i think she may e the first succesfull female death metal singer. as, believe it or not, its not very easy to get your voice into that pitch (for men OR women)

one which hits me is lacuna coil. I don't know why.

+ 1. I just love Cristina Scabbia's voice. It's...yeah special, for lack of a better term. :P

Another female voice which stands out for me is Joan Baez. She's fabulous. And yes, Tarja Turunen, who is not over rated at all, hell no...she has an amazing powerful voice the likes of which are very hard to find *looks at the calendar since NW has been looking for a new vocalist...:P Right moving on ;d

I tend to prefer guys' voices lately though, I don't know why, sorry. I just do. One of my favourite voices atm is the dude from Falconer, Mathias Blad I think his name is. He has such clear epic vocals, it sends shivers down your spine. (if you're into this sort of stuff, of course....)

"Metal isn't about violence or faggy whiny lyrics. It isn't even about who plays the heaviest and fastest. It is about invoking a sense of wonder and magnitude that no other genre can depict."

bluarosezk0.jpg

I can't say I like one over the other.

Female vocals are much softer and easier on the ears (usually).

Male vocals on the other hand can get through a lot of different emotions much more easily. I have a harder time believing that a female vocalist is angry when I'm so used to hearing them in a happier/sexier tone, though I'm used to hearing male vocals be happy/angry/sad/etc.

I think it depends on the song, entirely. Generally I listen to more male vocals, but some of the most beautiful songs i've heard have been sung by female vocalists.

Eva Cassidy, Enya, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield and Doris Day spring to mind.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

Most of the time I can't stand female vocals. There are some exceptions though.

Same.(except it's kinda the other way round - I like female vocals with exceptions) It depends on the voice, the song, the key...there's stuff like Sugarbabes, Girls Aloud - :-X But then soprano choir, Jewel, Katie Melua, Hayley Sanderson, :3> vs my favourite male singers (bass choir! wow!!!!) Antionio Banderas :3> :3> (but that may just be his accent...)

But hm, I would probably say Female. Though it really does depend on what kind of singer they are.

Female vocals.

Especially when its Jazzy and or theatre music.

the vocalist Depends on genre like Cristina Scabbia from lacuna coil has a great voice and a good male Vocalist is Maynard James Keenan form tool

I tend to prefer female vocalists. Although there are some genres where a male vocalists just tends to suit better.

The genre definitely is the decider for me, for example I don't like females singing rock. I think I am also put off of female vocalists by the fact that so many girls in my school insist on singing loudly, and most of the time they can't and it sounds horrible.

xseismicx5dw8.png

I don't think I have a single song sung by a female on my playlist.

Definately male.

Supermonk, proving you wrong since 1992.

Supermonk rocks, I want to have his children.

Music is like candy. You always get rid of the rapper.

Male vocals.

With females they try to draw out the note too much and they go over the top.

It honestly depends on what kind of music they are singing. Men tend to do better at rap and heavier rock, but women do better at just about everything else. Every once in a while a man that can sing pop comes along and all the girls fall in love with him.

it doesnt matter to me it just depends on wat the song is like.
