cadburys_egg
Do we need them? Are you one? Here's an argument for them; They promote good grammar (evidently from name) and possibly encourage people to type like a normal person and not like a dyslexic cat having a seizure across the keyboard. It's not only good to use correct grammar so you won't be persecuted by the particular person, but its good practice for typing skills. When I first joined TIF I typd lyk dis cus it ws fst. But, I soon learnt otherwise. I found that it took long to do homeworks considering I needed to type normally. I was actually so lazy at one point that I set all of my autocorrect options so when I typed in chat speak, it corrected it to normal. But I soon learnt that my typing wasn't getting any better. Now, I am a self-taught typist and can average a 100wpm. Here's an arugment against them; They can ruin the environment of a forum. Having a friendly, light-hearted conversation is great, but when one person makes a grammatical error... BAMTHEYGETATTACKED. Sometimes usually contributing nothing towards the topic. Pointing out errors is one thing, but flaming them so much that global warming happens isn't going to help any more. Some people just want to type like they do. Just because they type like a 6 year old doesn't make them a bad person. Most people see chat speakers as some chav who only goes on the internet to cyber, go on forums and update their "space". (Trying to get that across without dodging the sensor) But, what do you think? Discussify.

BlueLancer
I never make a post purely based on somebody's bad grammar, I don't even mention it at all. But...Then there is the occassional post (even here on tip.it) that is SO horribly written you simply can't understand what the person is saying. The thread loses it's meaning and becomes a contest of who has the best intepretation, and people start flaming each other about what the original poster meant. Pete_the_Viscous
Of course I could be pedantic MMMM yes. Shallow and pedantic. EDIT: ! Commited a cardinal sin! Bad grammar in a grammar post! Hahaha. On topic, I find it annoying if someone corrects something that was obviously just a typo. That is, if it's obvious that someone generally knows what they're doing, but made a litle mistake like that, then it is just pedantic to pick them up on it. If it's something consistant, though, like using their, there or they're in the wrong place, then it annoys me and I like people being told what they're doing wrong. I'm generally not bothered about real hard-core grammar things, though. People using less when they should use fewer, for instance, doesn't really bother me; to stupidly split infinitives sort of gets on my nerves, but I don't think it's something for which people should be jumped. To sum up: I don't like grammar nazis, but I quite like the odd grammar... well, what's less extreme than nazi but in the same vein? One of them. deviantart account
Tigra00
I like grammar nazi's, but not the crazy ones that will go on about like college english stuff that noone cares about. People who type like an idiot need to be told they do, because it isn't cool. I used to type like an idiot when I was like 13, and I can't imagine doing it again, it's too much work NOT spelling things right. The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me! ThurinEthir
I guess you can consider me one. I mean, how exactly is it faster? It saves you what, 5 letters? I usually don't point it out, but I sort of get mad in my head. The only excuses I'll accept for using it are: 1. My English isn't so good (As in worse than a 6th grader's). I don't know the rules of it, and my spelling isn't so good. (Unless they don't capitalize...Since almost every language requires capitalizing.) 2. It was typo. Nothing else. Not even "zmg pmg dys s lyk d bst wy t spk!!!!!" In fact, there's this kid I've known for a while, and all of a sudden he starts typing without vowels. His excuses: 1. I just got a Gameboy. (Seriously, who actually plays Gameboy that much anymore?) 2. I'm getting ready for when I get a cell phone and can text message people during school. (Wow...During school? And it clearly shows he doesn't understand how text messaging works, it's not like there's a keyboard...) ctp080188
I mostly use correct grammar and spelling as far as my knowledge of it goes, occasionally I'll get lazy and spell something stupidly on purpose (if you catch my drift... i.e. gonna and all that). But to be fair, I don't really care how other people write, if I can understand it then it's fine. However, those that don't use correct grammar, in a forum where the only way of judging someone is not only by content of the post, but how they spell and use grammar, a poor impression can be given off by these people. I don't mean the odd word or the odd apostrophe left out, I mean those posts where every word is spelt how it is sounded or with numbers and all that malarkey. I'm probably demonstrating bad grammar now with those humongous sentences but hey, deal with it. SHH HUT YUH MUH. DERKHED.

knives669
I'm not a grammar Nazi. :P As far as I'm concerned, if you read something that is misspelled and you can understand the meaning of what the person was saying, then there's no need to correct them. However, if you can't understand a word of what they say, then you can ask them what they meant, but not flame them. It's not something worth getting your blood pressure up, or losing sleep over... Which is what I think some people here do.
