Salamander Research

So... I'm really sick of seeing dragon scimitar and dagger pures who pray scimitars. When I made this RS account I intended never to PK with that combination.

And now, what comes a long but a flamethrower that is built to penetrate both armor AND prayer? Well, I found some people training on red salamanders so I asked them to give me a few. I found a awesomely quick way to collect tar, and now I'm doing some tests on them.

First test:

Hypothesis: Strength mode counts as fighting with a standard weapon, using the strength bonus and level, while magic mode is like a spell, doing the same amount regardless of magic level.

Test information

(Me)

75 strength, super strength potion, Max hit 18 (40 tests)

82 magic, Max hit 18, (40 tests)

(Friend)

89 strength, strength prayer 15%, Max hit 20, (20 tests)

92 magic, Max hit 20, (20 tests)

Analysis:

Right off the bat, it seems to me that the max hit with strength and magic are the same. This might be because of the fact we only tested such a low number of attacks with each. According to Tip.It's max hit calculator I should have been able to hit 21s with those circumstances. The weapon seems semi-accurate. It hits its fair share of 0s, especially with melee. However, with mage it seems to hit very accurately.

The speed of the weapon is approximately the same as the scimitar. However, ALL modes have a range of 1, meaning you must be exactly adjacent to your target.

Another interesting fact. I collected 120 tar in roughly 10 minutes. As the tar is selling 500 each right now, that's approximately 60k in 10 minutes or 360k an hour. Pretty amazing considering I'm level 62 with 1 defence and 13 prayer.

I haven't drawn any conclusions yet. In my opinion, 120 shots total isn't enough to confirm any guesses as to how this strange weapon works. Back to the swamp I go.

If anyone wishes to help test these salamanders, post your results here please. Just list max hit, number of shots, magic or strength level and circumstances. Thanks!

Second Test

Hypothesis: Maximum hit with melee is NOT affected by potions.

40 shots, No Potions or Prayer, Max hit 17

40 shots, Super attack and strength potion, 10% Strength Prayer, Max hit 22

Analysis:

LOTS of good information. My hypothesis for this experiment was definitely wrong. Once I put on prayer and potions, my maximum hit even exceeded the maximum from the last experiment.

This proves, strengthwise, potions, level and prayer DO matter.

Very likely, my original hypothesis regarding how the lizard behaves as a standard melee weapon.

That just leaves information needed on magic...

Third test:

Hypothesis: Magic is based on magic level. Therefore, strength and attack potions should not affect my maximum hit.

60 Shots, No potions or prayer, Max hit 18

Analysis:

This was a pretty quick test. My maximum hit without potions is 18, the same as it was in the first experiment, WITH potions. Therefore, magic attack has NO affiliation with strength or attack levels.

Miscellaneous facts:

After it being pointed out, I tested it myself, and interestingly, the 3 attacks have different speeds.

The attacks sometimes strike diagonally. I'm not sure why but it does.

I've recieved 2 or 3 pms about where to collect swamp tar. My advice is to kill cave slimes. I'm 1 defence and I can kill them fairly easily. My friend with 80 defence collected 1k tar with just one monkfish, no antipoison.

As for the herbs, collect them from chaos druids. Most of the herbs they drop are low level, so just save those herbs that you normally drop. :)

Nice stuff, interesting to see swamp tar going for so much, its not hard to get :?

Actually, with the people crowding around for it, if you want to get them in lumbridge swamps it's overcrowded and it'll take you forever.

Most people don't realize Mort Myre swamp is filled of swamp tar spawns. :)

where did you get that tar so fast? slimies? :P

Actually I didn't think of slimes. It turns out the only reason they were hard to get is the crowd, and so few people have been using mort myre so it's really easy to get there.

is the drawback to them the fact that you need to refill them every 15 shots?

No. Actually, the shots go into your quiver.

1 herb + 15 tar = 15 "arrows".

And they're stackable and like arrows, you can equip as many as you want.

And about the prayer noobs... yea, and for bypassing armor as well.

maybe you wanted to know this but im 96 range i pot to 109 then use eagle eye and my max hit with it so far using the range style is 23 which is -1 my normal max hit with rune arrows with a magik short(without spec). so it might be like that for all the range levels.

I have several thousand pastes... Lol.

BTW Cave slimes drop a lot of swamp tar for those of you short on it.

The Range attack seems to hit about the same as a crystal bow.
