Holy, wow!

I want... no I am getting one of these when I build my house!!!

I don't want to spoil it, read everything on the site

Okay, now for those who read up on it, is that not the sweetest thing you ever saw?! I mean flip through the catalog, page 4 has all the opening mechanisms

Dibs on the clock, that when set to midnight, leads to a hidden staircase \'

Ah, but alas it all costs lots of money. :(

Bah, the bookcase (2nd sweetest one after the clock I would say) is only $4,500.

Houses cost hundreds of thousands, I mean heck an alarm system costs like 8 grand to wire, this is half the cost and I think a lot more secure... not to mention sweet.

And as the site points out it will drastically increase the resale value of the house.

I could make one of these. Anybody could, and sell it for 8,000.

Are these automatic? Or Hand-opening?

EDIT: Nevermind, they are automatic.

That would be so fun to just have a friend over and ride that up and down

My grandmother has 3 secret doors in her house - two of them lead to the same hidden room, one is a bookcase and the other is a spice rack. Another panel of a wall lifts off to reveal a safe. They are nowhere near as cool as the ones on that site though.

In my opinion, there's only two ways to make those things worth it:

1) You build the secret room below your house. The image of a revolving stair is an excellent example, causing the room to end up on your basement. Which you don't have. No, the house does most empathically not have a basement. You don't see a basement door do you?

2) You have a... what are they called in english.... souterrain house? Both floors on the ground level because the house is built in a slope? And then you sort of make a back room into the ground. Depending on where the house is, this kind of secret room would be completely undetectable from anywhere else, yet be able to be quite large. My personal favourite way of making a secret room.

Subterranean. That's the way my grandmother's is. It may sound cool but it is a bit underwhelming, it is just a tiny office room. It isn't that cool because it doesn't employ a classic secret-door-opening mechanism like pulling a book or twisting a candlestick - you just push on the door.

Wow, nice idea for number 2. Good points on both, you don't want people to notice the extra wall. I would probably do it in a way that the secret room less than 6x6 feet. Just a small room where I keep all a safe and a shelf/bookcase full of my gadgets.

Call me anti-social, but the way I always wanted my secret room - the entire back wall of the bottom floor of our house is against the ground so to speak - is big enough to stay in, close the door, then just sit there with a good book (and a computer with internet access. If I ever get enough money to do something like this, I'd build it big enough to contain some household servers) until I felt like reemerging into the world again.

Coolest thing ever!

Clock and the stairs are too cool. I mean, I'm just so hyped now.

Iris scan and elevating stairs eh!

Yea, its right out of those "Myst" games. Especially the ones where you have to do something, like set a clock, and then a wall panel slides to show a hidden keypad. Enter the right code (usually found in a journal nearby in the games) and suddenly the clock slides back showing a staircase that leads to a time machine or something ^_^

I've already sent this link to a friend with a huge Batman collection (up to the point of having two different Batman pinball machines). When he buys his first house, he wants to put his entire collection into a room that can only be accessed in Batcave style.
