Read Ender's Game since everyone on that last book suggested it. It's one of my favortite books now and I'm going to read the rest of the series.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Right now I'm in the middle of Salem's Lot- Stephen King. My friend lent it to me about a month ago and for some reason I'm moving through it really slowly. I just have to be in the right mood to read it. It's really great for getting immersed in the little town that he creates.

I usualy have two books on the go at once - one thatI read at home, and one thatI read in my free periods at school. The one I'm reading in my free's is Honore de balzac's "Wild [wagon]'s Skin", which I a pretty awesome book so far.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At home I just bought two books by Bertrand Russell (well one is by him, the other is a compliation of his spreeches, pamphlets and essays), and I am reading "Why I am not a Christian" first, which will work me into his mind so I can read his "History of Western Philosophy". Surprisingly for a philosopher, he writes very clearly and eloquently - unlike Kant, Mill, Bentham, Aristotle (although he can be forgiven as it is translated from the Greek :P) and Nitzche who's books I kind of started then gave up on after about 2 or 3 pages. Why I am not a Christain has me hooked already, and his breath taking logic is awesome. Whilst I can see flaws in the arguments presented, it is still amazing.

Oh, wow, I completely forgot. I had that recommended to me and I was supposed to pick it up this week.

I don't really know how to express this, but by far the best books I have ever read in my life have to be Leaving Poppy by Kate Cann and Hungry City series by Philip Reeve. Hungry City, in particular the fourth one, Darking Plain, are really, really sad and emotional. :cry:

Gotta read one of those sometime. Completely agree most "philosophers" just seem to write utter nonsense. Kant is a prime example. He writes huge volumes, where i have to read every sentance thrice to understand it and i read the originals (german) mind you. I wrote a paper about Nietzsches "Will to power" last semester and just starting one about Aristoteles "On the soul". This time it's gonna be something deconstructive, ikonoclastic. I have the urge to annihilate these overidealized views about the works of people like Aristoteles, that even professors seem to harbor.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I prefer Discworld novels or idk something like the "Dune" series over Kant and Aristoteles anytime - also liked the few books by Huxley i read so far.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I value movies and music equal to books. Movies like idk The Matrix, Dogville or Dark City (just the first that came to my mind) as well as lyrics by Bad Religion (above all) or NOFX ("The Decline" is awsome!) or music videos by Linkin Park or Evanescence for example carry deep meaning imo.

Oh yeah, and Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. Amazing, beautiful book, must be read slowly over about 6 weeks preferably with a small group of friends to talk about it with.

If you want something that needs thinking, I'd suggest Orhan Pamuk's books. "My name is red" is truly amazing book, but perhaps pretty hard to follow. Another very good book is Paul Coehlo's alchemist as mentioned. These books make you think, and well, make you grow as a person. I didn't know that a single book could do that, but when I finished those books, I realized that it was possible.

 

 

 

If you want good fantasy books, I'd suggest abarat books and althalus. Can't remember right now who wrote them, but good books anyways.

I'm currently reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It's enjoyable and quite interesting. I'm just finished reading The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene and The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Both likeable in each different ways.

Anyway, I'm surprised no one has mentioned J.R.R. Tolkien yet. Read the LOTR Set + the Hobbit and the other prequels to LOTR (ie. Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and the rest of the History of MiddleEarth set [compiled and edited by his son]). It's amazing how he created such a detailed world.

i suggest The Morrow Day series by Garth Nix. :D

Try reading 'The Last Light of the Sun' by Guy Gavriel Kay.

I forgot one of the best books I've ever read. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. His books are amazing, I want to learn Russian so I can read his first novels. Also, Look at the Harlequins is also really good book, and very 'interesting'.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Also, if you want an interesting, but can be boring book, than I recommend Crime And Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky(sp?). It's a good book, just long, and it tends to drag on here and there.

I know I say this in every book topic but read Catch 22. Its incredibally funny and it really was worth reading for me.

Two of my favorite books of all time are "The Silver Kiss" and "Blood and Chocolate" by Annette Kurtis Clause

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

"The Silver Kiss" is about vampires and stuff, and "Blood and Chocolate" is about werewolves. Seriously, don't turn them down. They're amazing novels. I couldn't stop reading them. They take you on a marvelous journey of suspense, sadness, and the writings of a true writer and poet. Amazing.
