Texas: You just can't make this stuff up anymore.

Featured Replies

Good God, you guys are so inconsiderate.

It's perfectly thought out and safe. They have a guide with them. The laser sight is not for the blind man, it's for the guide. The guide tells him which way to move the rifle or bow, so that he can fire.

It's been legal all the time for a blind man to hunt, but the problem that this bill addresses is that it is illegal for all hunters in Texas to use laser sights. Since there is no other way for blind men to hunt than to use lasers, this law allows blind men only to use them.

Does that help explain it, or do you want to make fun of a completely fair law anymore?

Although the idea of a blind man hunting in the forest eith me in kinda scary  i can see no problem allowing them to use laser sights, this gives the guide the abiltity to accuratly direct the blind hunters fire

Meh. If I were running the world there'd be no sport hunting allowed.

I personally don't see the point. Why not just fire at a firing range or something? :?

I don't have a problem with the bill, but quite why a blind man would want to hunt is beyond me. I mean the guide could tell him he hit it and he wouldn't know any better.

I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
If you're not blind, then you probably shouldn't judge the ability of a blind person.

Because I am not mentally impaired, I should not judge your ability. :|

I don't imagine a lot of blind people wanting to hunt, but go ahead if you want. When someone aims the gun for you, does that not take the fun out of hunting (not that I would know seeing as how I have never hunted)?

Thank you 4be2jue for the wonderful sig and avatar!

Yeah I really don't see the point in someone being blind wanting to hunt...

I could something like this turning bad too.

"Ok... now move over there. To the left. Left a bit more.... ok shoot!" and the guide gets the blind man to shoot another person.

In all serriousness though I don't see why a blind person would want to hunt. Kind of.. takes all the fun out of it.

Note that this applies to LEGALLY blind people. These people can still see, just not well.... at all.

When you shoot at a target with basically any wepon it's only fun for so long. It's more of a challenge to shoot an animal and track, just waiting for it to die, it as it runs off into the woods.

Well shooting at the target range isnt nearly as fun as it would be to shoot a bird. I mean, I dont really want to eat a target.

My dad and uncles go hunting and yes to them it is fun. But they dont just shoot the bird, cheer and move on. They acually cook it up and put the meat in a stew or something. (which is delicious!)

So yea, its for fun, but they are putting the bird to use. I know there are people out there that only do it for the hell of it, but most hunters (at least the ones I know) dont do it only for that reason.

Wait...are you saying 'legally' blind people can see? So I guess my uncle is illegally blind because he cannot see at all?

I think he's confused. 'Visually impaired' is a different legal category than blindness. They don't count as the same. Visually impaired means you can still see something. Hearing impaired is not the same as deaf either.

In Texas, killing an animal and not removing the remains is considering a crime punishable by up to 8 years in Huntsville Prison. Hunting is for sport only, and if nothing else you have to turn over the body of the animal to wildlife authorities to dispose of it properly.

In addition, there are criminal codes for game. Our animals actually have rights when it comes to hunting.

Okay, personally, allowing blind people to hunt in the first place is just mentally disturbing. Its like letting blind people drive. "Okay now watch out for these kids and that bus and that tree and oh look out for that dog"

This is just unfathomable.

Just to make clear, everyone here knows that blind means "Unable to see" correct? (Which is usually helpful when aiming). Most hunters arent very good shots when they have decent vision.....How is a guide going to help? Seriously this is THE dumbest thing.

mcchrissigaw8.gif

Everybody lovin' it, but ain't no body touchin' it

And even with a laser sight, what possible range do they expect to get?

Wait...are you saying 'legally' blind people can see? So I guess my uncle is illegally blind because he cannot see at all?

I'm not saying your uncle isn't blind :x . Just saying that this law applied to legally blind people who aren't completely blind and thus can take advantage of this law. A person under the following definition can still probably see the outline of a javelina or turkey or an elk, but still need a guide. And no, hunting animals isnt fun for the hell of it, but the food tastes a lot better knowing you killed it yourself.

In North America and most of Europe, legal blindness is defined as visual acuity (vision) of 20/200 (6/60) or less in the better eye with best correction possible. This means that a legally blind individual would have to stand 20 feet from an object to see it with the same degree of clarity as a normally sighted person could from 200 feet.

Being legally blind is have your vision past a certain point where even with the best glasses, you can't see very well.

I forgot what it is though, I think it's like 5000/20.

Comparing hunting and driving is a terrible analogy. The amount of sight required in driving far surpasses that of hunting. In driving, the reaction time between what you see what your actions are far faster than that of hunting. If an animal is standing still, you have enough time for someone to help you aim correctly and then shoot before it runs away or whatever.

I don't really see the harm in allowing a blind person to hunt given that they have a guide alongside with them (which I am assuming is required). Let the person enjoy hunting if should they desire to do so.

turnip3zk1.png

I don't think sport hunting should be legal.

That said, as long as it is legal, I'm all for provisions being made so that the legally blind have the same opportunities as those who have the privilege as being "not disabled" (though I have a huge problem with the word "disability" to begin with... but...)

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

siggypooro0.jpg

I don't know who I'd rather be.. The blind hunter or the guy trying to tell the blind guy where to aim.. "Up.. Left.. Too far.. Damn.. It ran off.. Again.."

More to the point, I'd certainly not like to be the guy to say "OK, fire. ... Nope, looks like you just wounded that one in the flank. Never mind off you go after it and finish it off cleanly".

I really don't see why legally blind people shoot, other than for the twisted kick of murdering something. How can it be a 'sport' when the only skill you need is knowing how to hold a gun straight? Oh, and being able to listen.

Wow, the right to have your corpse dragged away and eaten rather than left in the forest. I'm sure the animals are just delighted!

In a little hilltop village they gambled for my clothes

I bargained for salvation and they gave me a lethal dose

I offered up my innocence, I got repaid with scorn

"Come in'', she said, "I'll give you shelter from the storm"
