Gas-like odor permeates Manhattan

Featured Replies

NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities were investigating the source of a mysterious gas-like odor Monday that stretched across a large part of Manhattan, including Rockefeller Center.

The Fire Department began getting calls about the odor around 9 a.m. Monday, said spokesman Tim Hinchey. No source had been identified.

Across the Hudson River, Jersey City, New Jersey, mayor's spokeswoman Maria Pignataro said officials there were told the odor was due to a gas leak in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, just north of Greenwich Village.

"The smell was very strong. It was very scary," said Yolanda Van Gemd, an administrator at ASA, a business school near the Empire State Building that was evacuated as a precaution.

Utility officials with Consolidated Edison had no immediate comment.

In August, seven people were treated at hospitals after a gaseous smell in the boroughs of Queens and Staten Island.

At least, I think that.

Um. I hope they find out where it comes from. :)

Hmmkay, it's nothing to worry about. Chances are if it spread a very wide area it would've thinned out to much to catch alight to anything.

Has anyone tried lighting a match yet?

It's Mercaptan, the odor additive in natural gas so people can smell it. It may or may not be a gas leak, and it may or may not just be a Mercaptan leak.

Nothing to worry about.

It's quite obvious the government has done a good job scaring the holy hell out of people, though. I've heard on CNN several times now that people were afraid to go into Manhatten because they thought it was a terrorist attack.

Yea, terrorists love to attack with non-deadly things. Those pranksters.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

Leave it to the media to blow things out of proportion and scare everyone  I'm sure it wasn't as bad as CNN tries to make it sound..

Has it always been the media's job to terrorize people?

I'm telling you - the government gets so much control just because they play on people's irrational fears that the media exploits.

Well that's not news. The government created "THE TERRORISTS" and they haven't hit us in years. I heard in a poll that 60% of Americans believe they'll get hit by terrorism this year though. I wonder why? Especially since there's only been one attack in such a long time span.

People are irrational and worry about the wrong things. And it doesn't help that they sit in their houses watching 24/7 news stations that seem like they must be paid off just to scare and worry Americans. Then Americans allow the government to waste our money combatting our biggest risk - obviously terrorism, so we invade terrorist countries like Iraq. Because Iraq was behind 9-11, of course. Get everyone under one big "TERRORIST" label to make it even more convenient.

So they're spending all our money fighting nonexistent terrorists, while funds for educations, the sciences, and other good uses for money are lowered in priority so we can defend ourselves against all of the terrorists trying to get us.

The gas I use in a house is methane.

I used to have a link to my school's project to provide fresh water to a Kenyan Village, but the sig police changed the link to say something, which, if followed, leads to an "ahem" adult website. Let me ask you. Which do you think is worse?

Try not to inhale

So, if the US doesn't spend any money on defending against terrorism, there wouldn't be terrorism. Now it's just a never ending cyclus. :?

We should still defend against it to a degree. I just don't think it should be the country's number one priority, which it seems pretty close to.
