wakka102
** DISCLAIMER: The Opinions Expressed Here Are My Own and Do NOT Represent Tip.It Management ** This was such an interesting question that I wanted to get involved a little bit. I hope you all realise that Admin The_Tallest1 isn't trying to make life difficult - he's trying to take positive action on an issue you've identified, and make TIF policy consistent. So try not to take it out on him, okay? ;) I'm rather surprised that the "Getting To Know You" topic was allowed, honestly. My only concern with it is that users have posted their home cities on that thread. (edit: oh, didn't realise it was new. well. see next paragraph.) All anyone needs to find you is your first and last name ... OR the name of your school and your photo .... a person can walk right up and say "Hi, pokemama, I saw your name on TIF! Can I buy you a hamburger at McDonald's?" With your city name and your age, only a handful of schools are likely, so again someone can find you fairly easily with a photo even without knowing your name! I personally would not identify my location any more specific than a state (I used to just say "the Southeast". Many folks I know say "New England", "the Northwest", etc.) I most definitely advise AGAINST giving your hometown name, ESPECIALLY a small town with only a few schools. A Huge nearby city might be ok (nobody is gonna find you if you live in a town that's a suburb of "Atlanta" or "an hour from Baltimore", lol.) Okay, now on to real life pictures. At Another Fansite, they allowed real life pictures. HOWEVER, there were several caveats: The first was that no personal information could show in the photo (one guy included his dog in a picture, with his dog's tag accidentally showing his home phone #, lol. He felt pretty stupid.) The second was the NO COMMENTS OF ANY SORT WERE ALLOWED, good or bad. Think about this. Would you really want someone commenting that you were ugly, pimply, scrawny, fat, stooped, disabled, [bleep]ty, had a bad hairstyle, wore too much makeup, or dressed funny? And it's not always flattering when someone tells a person that s/he is hawt, cexy, being drooled over, has a nice (body part), would-you-be-my-gf/bf, etc. SO. IF the Admins decide to revise the current policy (wherein Getting to Know You is allowed but RL pics are not), some changes and restraints would need to be enacted. 1. Don't post your city or any specific RL information other than your first name and your age. A state or major city in USA or Australia would be tolerable; province or major city in Canada; I dunno how generic places in the UK are identified but definitely not city (unless it's London or Edinburgh I s'pose); and so on for other countries. 2. NO COMMENTS on other people's pictures. AT ALL. PERIOD. Nice or Not Nice. So .... some serious self-restraint and policing is in order. These are my opinions and experience. Thanks for listening. ** DISCLAIMER: The Opinions Expressed Here Are My Own and Do NOT Represent Tip.It Management **Notice the bold. You meantion that people can find you with a name and a picture. Or a place and a picture. But you fail to expalin how they can find you with just a picture :-s . I can see no way of this happening. They are more likely to get you with the info in the "getting to know you topic" then they will with a picture. Also, Pedophiles generally use chat programs such as AIM or MSN rather then a Runescape fansite. I believe that tip.it is just being a little overprotective in not allowing pictures to be posted as they are way less harmful then other things being posted. People are allowed to show there MSN, AIM, or E-mail addresses for anyonme to click at anytime. People are allowed to post there hometown's, names, and other personal info right on the left side of every post they make (the stuff in the profile section). You must agree with me that all of this would be way more harmful then a picture. A picture shows a person, you see people all over the place. my conclusion. As long as a picture does not reveal anything about you (your street address, school, etc.) then it should be allowed. It's not like anyone has to post a picture, its optional. If someone is worried about it they don't have to participate.
Mercifull
I know where Parabola lives from doing a simple search. If I wanted too i could search the electoral roll and find the address of any UK citizen on the list. I dont need to know their pictures or for them to post information for me to find it out. All I need to know is a name. I belive that restrictions and a clear disclaimer needs to be put into place, I.e No pictures of under 16's or 14's for example. You shouldnt even be on this forum unless you are over 13 (COPPA). However I feel that the choice to post a real life picture is up to the user and should be allowed. I dislike the idea of a sticky where you all post pictures of yourself but posting holiday pictures or pics of you doing something cool in a valid thread should be perfectly ok. Faux
You shouldnt even be on this forum unless you are over 13 (COPPA) People openly admit they're 12 *cough* Issy *cough* and they're still allowed to be here. If anything, these kids are more of a liability to TIF than people posting pictures. :: Guess the Movie Contest Champion: pfilc23 ::
Cruiser
Pokemama no pedo is going to use a forum such as tip.it to get information off a victim. There's are thousands of other players across the web which are much easier for a pedo to get information, and this is a pretty hard and bad place for a pedo to get information. Any place with a concentration of kids could become a target. Sure there are literally hundreds of thousands of other places one could search for people but that doesn't some how magically exclude Tip.It. If people are willingly giving out info, it will attract them, regardless of location or medium. As others have said, it should really be up to the users personal choice, but then again there's the admin's views that they need to protect everyone from it in the first place. foolgool
Honestly. I belong to the other fansite that was mentioned, and have posted in the IRL pictures thread. Nobody has used AIM or MSN to contact me, nobody's been stalking me, and it would be very hard to locate somebody based on, as others ahve said, a picture of their room, or a forest, or something like that. As long as the no comments and the no personal info on the pic rules were enforced, I see no reason to not allow real life pictures. The code in my sig should say 1032 not 0132. Thanks for listening. ** DISCLAIMER: The Opinions Expressed Here Are My Own and Do NOT Represent Tip.It Management ** You make some good points here about being about to find someone with 2 things. However, like wakka said, we're only talking about a photo here. Most people in Off Topic know my first name (and some know my last), anyone can find my location, almost everyone knows my age, and a decent few users have seen pictures of me. Also, anyone who has added me on Facebook can get any detail they want on me (street address, phone number, political views, school, ect.). I don't have a problem giving out these details of myself because I know how to defend myself if a pedophile were to approach me. I honestly don't think they're going to come after a 16 year old male that's spent most of his life playing sports and staying in great physical condition. Any pedo who thinks they're going to try something with me is in for a painful lesson (thank you U.S. Marine Corps training class). It wouldn't be so wise for people such as Issy to hand out her street address because she's 12 years old and there's no way she can take on a fully grown man by herself. So I suppose giving out personal info deals more with your sex and age than just being a forum user. Internet Marketing For Newbies

Guest
Still no response from the Admin concerning their decision, does it really take that long (considering the TIF Con hangs in the balance of their decision)? Anyway let's how they make a sane decision. I agree with Wakka and Deloriagod, its just too hard for a pedo to get information from a place like here, with only a personal photo and there are much more easier and convenient ways for a pedo to get his/her ( ) information. the_tallest1
Still no response from the Admin concerning their decision, does it really take that long (considering the TIF Con hangs in the balance of their decision)? To help put it more in perspective we have about 10 people who need to weigh in on this decision. Trying to coordinate that many people around work, family and other RL responsibilities takes just a little bit of time especially when we're having a discussion and waiting for someone's reply to another's post. We should hopefully be coming to a decision soon. 571st to 99 Fm Nov. 4 '06 - 315th to 99 Crafting Mar. 3 '07 - 3410th to 99 Fishing Sept. 18 '0726378th to 99 Cooking Oct. 16 '07 -.- 99 Thieving Dec. 29 '07 - 1343rd to 99 Farming June 5 '081807th to 99 Agility Nov. 8 '08 - 3094th to 99 Smithing Feb. 14 '092012 total - 91 combat

Satenza
That other topic wouldn't happen to be the tipiter events forum would it? [/u] With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

insane
We are still discussing the rules and how they need to be clarified on the issue of personal information in order to identify what is and is not safe to allow. Wouldn't it have to be an "all or nothing" type of rule? If you allow some things, then users will complain about others that aren't allowed. If you want to be consistent you'll have to ban either all contact information or just say it is the users at risk and allow everything.
