A Guide to collecting Herblore 2nds (Draft Complete)

Recommended Posts

As we all know, the art of Herblore in Runescape is all about making potions with herbs and their respective Second ingredients (AKA 2nds). However the skill itself is rather unpopular due to that collecting 2nds can be a rather tedious task (herbs, despite their cost, is somewhat easier to get as a lot of monsters drop herbs, but many seconds are not common monster drops). This guide aims to provide an introduction on how to collect these seconds efficiently and cheaply.

1. Eye of Newt

Eye_of_newt.png

Street Price: 100-150gp each

Easily the easiest 2nd to obtain, however you need a little bit of cash to get a decent amount. A few 10k's should get you plenty. There are 2 ways to obtain this second:

Method 1 (Using balloon and Ring of Dueling):

This method requires you to have completed the An Enlightened Journey quest, as well as unlocked the travel route between Castle Wars and Entrana. This is the fastest method to obtain Eye of newt. Ring to Castle wars, withdraw a normal log, go to balloon, travel to entrana, run south to the herblore shop there, buy eyes, Ring back to Castle wars. Repeat as desired. However due to the low stock this shop provides, world hopping maybe requried.

eye2sq1.png

Method 2 (Using Glory):

The use of Amulet of Glory teleports is the second best way to obtain this second ingredient. Glory to Karamja, catch a boat to Port Sarim, buy a load of eyes, and either Ring back to Castle Wars or glory to edgeville.

2. Horn of Unicorn

Unicorn_horn_-1-.pngUnicorn_horn_dust.png

Street Price: 1k - 1.2k each

This is one of the hardest second to gather in large bulks, and I would recommend refraining from using this second until you can make Super Antipoisons. Normal Antipoisons can be purchased from various General Stores such as the one in Bwo Wannai Village. The easiest way I have found to gather these horns is Ring to Castlewars, Balloon to Entrana (again requires the completion of An Enlightened Journey) and kill the 4 unicorns there near the law altar. The unicorns are relatively spread out, but you should not have to wait too long for the unicorn to respawn. You may also Glory to Draynor Village, run to Port Sarim, catch a boat to entrana and glory back to draynor when done. This second requires grinding by the use of a Mortar & Pestle

unicorn1zw8.png

An alternative for higher levels is via the use of Carrallangar Teleport (Ancient Magicks Teleport, level 84 mage required). This teleports you to the Graveyard in the Wilderness and directly west of the Black Forest, where a large pack (albeir rather spaced out) of Black Unicorns reside. The Wilderness level is rather low so you can either use Ring of Dueling or Glory teleport out of the forest once you gather a full load.

3. Limpwurt root

Limpwurt_root.png

Street Price: 600 - 1k each

One of the tricky ones, this second is mostly monster dropped, while you can also farm lumpwurt plants (which always yields 3 per plant). The best monsters that drop limpwurt roots are Hill Giants, Hobgoblins and Cockatrices. If you find yourself struggling to fight these monsters for the roots because your combat is too low, do not bother. Save the Kwuarms till later and use Tarromin with Ash instead.

4. Ash

Ashes.png

The reason why I added this second in is that this is the only second worth the effort to make Tarromin potions. It is used to make Serum 207 and yields the same experience as strength potions (though the potion becomes useless, and can only be made during and after Shades of Mort'ton Quest) Normal strength potions do not yield enough benefits to counteract the cost/effort of getting Limpwurt roots. Firemaking is the easiest way to get it. Burn a load of logs, collect the ashes, bank, burn, repeat.

If you have progressed in the Fairy Tale part 2 enough so that you have the access to the Fairy Rings, ash collecting is very easy. Go to A L R Fairy ring (this is the alternate Abyss, where there are Abyssal Leeches, Guardians, Walkers and Demons. Not multicombat or wilderness related), and run west literally 5 steps. There should be an abyssal leech in the vicinity. This abyssal leech is very easy to kill if you have a decent combat level (around 80 or so, 10HP), and respawns very quickly. Ash is 100% drop so you can kill until you have a full inv and bank in the Fairy Bank.

5. Red spider eggs

Red_spiders_eggs.png

Street Price: 600 - 900 each

The best place to collect this second is unfortunately in the Wilderness. However you are very much protected because the Red spiders in this area is aggressive and is single combat, thereby giving you plenty of time to glory out should there be any chance of PK'ers. The Egg spawn is in the Edgeville Wilderness dungeon, just north of the Thugs near the gates. (Will put up a map later). All other places not in wilderness have too little respawn spots for them to be pratical (due to their spawn rate).

eggshk9.png

5. Chocolate Dust

Chocolate_bar.pngChocolate_dust.png

Street Price: 200 - 400 each

Another easy 2nd to get. The best way to get this is buying out the Culinaromancer's chest when at full stock (50), however this requires the completion of Recipe for Disaster quest (completed to and including killing the Culinaromancers). Buy out the chest, world hop, repeat.

If you do not have Recipe for Disaster complete, the Grand Tree food stores are the next best thing. Each of the food shops on the first (British) / Second (American) floor of the tree stocks 20 chocolate bars and 10 chocolate dusts at full stock. There is also a bank on the same floor. This second requires grinding by the use of a Mortar & Pestle OR a knife (latter option for free players)

6. White Berries

White_berries.png

Street Price: 800 - 1000 each

Second hardest 2nd to obtain, as the only reasonable way to get large quantities of White berries requires the access to the Elf Teleport Crystal (requires starting the Mourning's Ends Part 1, the initiation of the quest gives you the crystal). There is a respawn just north of the tracker elf and it spawns very fast (2-3 seconds) so this makes it the best spot to collect white berries. If you do not have the access to this location, your only other viable route to collecting these is by farming the White berry bushes (requires 59 farming). The Spawn in the wilderness is too long of a walk in my opinion to be of practical use. Ancient Magicks spell (the Level 78 Spell) has been suggested, however extreme caution is to be observed as the area is deep wilderness, and the white berry spawns are guarded by Red Dragons. It is also a very long walk around the lava (for wilderness situations) to get to a teleportable level.

Use this ONLY for Super Defence potion.

berrykw9.png

The redline denotes the shortest path to the White Berry spawn

7. Toads Legs

Toads_legs.png

This second is not popularly collected due to the attainability of toadflax herbs and impraticality of agility potions (Toadflax is mostly used for Saradomin Brew instead). The best place to collect them is the swamp pond beside the Grand tree. There are also some near the pond south of taverly (near the willow trees) and the nearest bank to there would be Falador. When you pick up the toad, you need to left click each of them to remove the legs from the toad. Caution is advised for this second, as its first option is 'Eat', not 'Use'.

Taverly Respawn

8. Goat Horn

Desert_goat_horn.pngGoat_horn_dust.png

Goat horn is used for Combat potions, and yields the most experience per Harralander used (84 xp per potion). This potion is useful for low cost melee training but higher levels would find super sets much more powerful. The best way to get this second would be using going into the Al Kharid desert via the shantay pass with the best Anti-heat gear (desert robes or better) and a waterskin. From Shantay pass, run west (past the Kalphite Lair) until you come to a coast, then run south a little. Run back to shantay pass to bank. This second requires grinding by the use of Mortar & Pestle.

goatsej5.png

There is also a spot near the Nardah Bank (literally in the same minimap) where there are 4 Desert Goats available for you to kill. However there is only 4 Goats there and so you may have to wait a while longer to get full load.

nardahhs0.png

(Nardah map taken from Official Jagex Map)

The advantage of Nardah spot is the obvious short walk to bank, however there is relatively low number of Goats present, so you may end up waiting for considerably longer than the spot near the Kalphite Lair. That spot has 6 Goats, which the first Goat would have respawned after you kill the 6th Lair.

9. Snape Grass

Snape_grass.png

Street Price: 450 - 600gp each

This second is probably the most used second in the game, mainly as the second in Prayer Potions. The best way to get Snape Grass would be to use Lunar Magicks (requires Lunar Diplomacy to teleport to Waterbirth Island, collect the snape grass and use either glory or ring of dueling to bank. There are 6 respawns by the boat back to rellekka and 6 more to the east (near the rock crabs there). If you are without the access of Lunar Magicks, the best way to obtain it is to move your house to Rellekka, run to the boat that brings you to the Waterbirth and go there to collect them. If you do not have access to a house, your last resort would be using Draynor or Falador bank, run to the so called Hobgoblin Pennisula west of the Crafting guild and collect them there.

10. Mort Myre Fungi

Mort_myre_fungi.png

Street Price: 800 - 1000gp each

This second can only be obtained after obtaining the Blessed silver sickle from Nature Spirit quest (if you have lost yours, simply craft a normal silver sickle, go to the Nature Altar and use your sickle on the altar). To obtain it, you must stand next to a rotten log (NOTE: you cannot be on top of it, you must be beside it) and use the 'Cast Boom' option from the sickle. The most efficient way to collect fungi is to find a spot where you can be right beside 3 rotten logs (such that you can get 3 fungus per cast boom, since it drains your prayer a random amount per cast).

fungusur2.png

Location and direction to the 3 log points. There are 2 such points located in the red box

Bring house teleport runes while collecting the fungi, teleport to house when you have a full load, teleport to house, recharge prayer and use yur Kharyrll (Canafis) portal to go back to bank. Wielding your silver sickle while carrying Dust runes and Laws will allow you to carry 26 fungus per load (Dust runes can be obtained in large amounts from Flesh Crawlers in Stronghold of Security while operating the Sickle in the equipment screen casts Boom).

11. Gorak Claws

Gorak_claws.pngGorak_claw_powder.png

This is the only untradable 2nd in the entire herblore section (Cave Nightshade is also untradable, however it is a first ingredient, not a second). It can only be obtain when you start Fairy Tale Part 2, and is only useful to those with farming level of 47 or higher (The herb, Starflower, can only be picked with 47 farming, although it is available in large quantities). The Goraks can be found via Fairy Ring D I R, and they are very vicious. They have a high combat level, hits hard and prayers do not work there. The Claw drop rate has been decreased once from 100% due to 'balance' issues, hence this second is not very useful unless you wish to train herblore without using any money. Use the Fairy bank to bank the claws. This second requires grinding by the use of a Mortar & Pestle

12. Blue Dragon Scale

Blue_dragon_scale.pngDragon_scale_dust.png

Street Price: 800 - 1000gp each

There is only one place this second can be found: Taverly dungeon, near the Blue Dragons and Baby Blue Dragons. lv 70 agility is strongly recommended, as the long walk around is very long. Bring an anti dragon shield just incase (though you may find it unnecessary due to the number of rangers training there). Use Teleport to Falador for quick banking. This second requires grinding by the use of a Mortar & Pestle

scalekk6.png

13. Wine of Zamorak

Wine_of_zamorak.png

Street Price: 1000 - 1200gp each

Again, only one place where you can find this second: north of Falador, north of Dorik's house and in the Temple of Zamorak. This requires you to kill every Follower of Zamorak in the room before you attempt to pick up the wine, or telegrab it. Due to its respawn rate, it is adviced that you bring a diversion with you while attaining this second (such as High Alchemy). One of the harder seconds to collect.

wineyy4.png

NOTE: Despite what map suggests, the temple is inaccessible from the Burthorpe side unless you walk around through the gate.

14. Potato Cactus

Potato_cactus.png

Street Price: 2000 - 2200gp each

This is the most expensive second for a very good reason: it is the only pratical second for the Lantadyme herb (which makes Magic Potions, and sells rather well) and it is the hardest second to get. You can only find it in either the room with the Kalphite Soldiers on the first level of the Kalphite level or near the Kalphite Queen. Due to the multicombat area, it is very hard to collect this second without using food. Al Kharid is the nearest bank.

Extra Items

A. Cave Nightshade (UNTRADABLE)

farm_belladonna2.gif

This item is a first ingredient for the Weapon Poison (++) (AKA Super Poison), and is one of the two known untradable herblore ingredient. Nightshade can either be grown or collected from Skavvid Caves. The former requires Belladonna seeds and planted in the farm patch in Draynor Manor. However this methos is a very slow method, as the Nightshade takes a long time to grow for its yield (1 per seed), making it impractical for collecting in large quantities.

The second method of Skavvid caves requires Watchtower Quest (up to the point where you use the Death Rune on the Ogre to obtain a map). You need a Light source and the map in your inv to use this method. Due to its respawn rate however, it is advised that you bring High Alchemy items and/or (and option suggested) logging onto a crowded world such as world 2 to maximise your multitasking. The caves that contains the Nightshades will be mapped at a later stage.

B. Swamp Tar

Swamp_tar.png

Street Price: 100 - 350gp ea (According to Official Forums checked on 5th Feb 2007)

Swamp Tar is used primarily amongst Black Salamander users (like myself), and is the primary ingredient for the ammunition. Swamp Tar is also desirable for use with Harralander herbs, as you do not need to click a lot in herblore to make mass number of tars (there is a make-x option, which some people may argue slows down the rate you make the tars), you do not need vials or any other ingredients (you only require pestle and mortar in your inventory) and finally you only need to withdraw 1 item per load (the herbs) as the tars are stackable. The experience is also the second highest for Harralander (next to Combat potion).

Swamp Tar collection via respawns is a rather slow method for collecting tars, and thus it is adviced to kill Cave Slime for them (it is a 100% drop, and drops anywhere between 1 to 9). They also respawn very fast so you dont need to wait if you know the right spot. The best place to kill them is outlined in the box in the following map (Taken from the Tip It's map of the Lumbridge caves)

slimesqu2.png

The best equipment adviced is using Ava's Accumulator using steel arrows, Magic Short bow, best ranger equip and a Charged Glory. The lack of safe spots in the cave is ideal for use of accumulator, as it picks up the arrows for you AND it gets the cave slime to sit right beside you so you do not need to move while gathering the Tar.

Addendum Notes:

Alternative Herb Droppers

Here is a list of good herb droppers that mid and higher level people may utilise for funner herb gathering speeds.

Flesh Crawlers

Flesh Crawlers can be found all over the second level of Stronghold of Security, they are aggressive to all levels (as far as I know), have a relatively low hp and are close packed. They also drop Dust runes (described in the Mort Myre Fungi) which are very useful for home teleports.

These can drop either Fire runes or Nature runes when a herb is dropped.

Aberrant Specters

These are level 60 slayer monsters on the first(UK)/second(US) floor of Slayer Tower in Canafis. These also require nosepeg equipped as well as either very high defence wearing highest mage defence gear or as high prayer boosting gear as possible with Mage from Protect prayer on. Not recommended unless you have are relatively high level (90+), have access to Salve amulet(e) (obtained from Haunted Mine quest and completion of Tarn's miniquest), and either on slayer task or on Ancient Magicks with access to Kharyrll Teleport. These can drop up to 3 herbs per drop. Another big bonus is that this guy drops level 3 clues.

Water Elemental

Not exactly a high level monster for herblore, but it is the ONLY monster in the game where it drops vials of water as 100% drop. If you can stand the banking and have at least the access to the Elemental workshop (Starting Elemental Workshop I), it can be a very good herblore starter and/or if you cannot afford to buy vials from other players and cannot stand world hopping for vials.

Al Kharid Warrior

Again, not exactly a high level monster, but you can force them to be aggressive to you easily by attacking any of the warriors in a room full of them. They all come to you waiting to be slaughtered while all you have to do is wait. After the carnage is over, pick up herbs, drop any undesired ones, and repeat after the room has respawned. However it may be difficult to find an empty world so grab the opportunity if you see it. The bank is also very near to the warriors.

Salarin the Twisted

Located in the Yanille Dungeon, requires level 67 agility to get to him, as well as a handiful supply of mind (and air runes if you wish to kill him quicker). The main plus about this guy is when he drops a Sinister Key, you have just earned 2 Harralanders, 3 Ranarr weeds, 1 Irit leaf, 1 Avantoe, 1 Kwuarm, and 1 Torstol guarenteed. Thus this can be an excellent place to gather herbs as there are other Chaos Druids in the same room so you can kill them while waiting for Salarin to respawn. Unfortunately the unique herb Torstol from the chest is a less useful herb of the lot. Details of the locations of the Sinister chest can be found in Tip's Herblore guide (for now, I shall add a picture of the location later for your convinience)

If you have 82 thieving, it becomes one of the best herb dropper locations in RS.

Herblore Training

Here is a small level to level guides on how to level Herblore quickly and cost effectively without burning too much cash. In all these guides, I assume that you KEEP all herb drops that you cannot id at your level (they are far better in your bank than sold as cash), and you should combine lower level methods with higher ones to maximise cost effectiveness

Level 3 - 15

You should only make one kind of pot, and that is Normal Attack potions. Marrentills are not worth the effort at all for the experience. Monsters that drop significant amounts of Guam include Al Kharid Warriors and Cave Bugs (NOT cave crawlers, i mean the 7hp ones). If you wish, you may throw away all the marrentills you find, or keep them as fuel for home altars.

Level 15 - 26

To use this method, you need to Start Shades of Mort'ton quest. Serum 207 is pretty easy to make. [NEED CONFIRMATION]Serum 207 can be used on the Afflicted people in Mort'ton and help you recover some of the Tarromin herbs you use[NEED CONFIRMATION]. Collect Ash by Firemaking if you are low combat level.

Level 26 - 45

Energy Potions from here on, forget about all other pots that you are able to make from 26 on. Switch to Combat potions when you can make them. When you com across Ranarr weeds, you should make prayer potions when you can, but keep all your Harralander and Tarromin herbs. They will be your main source of Herblore xp until 45.

Level 45 - 52

Make Super Attack potions from now on, and you may completely ignore all Guam leaf drops as their xp will no longer be helpful (however still keep Tarromins and Harralanders). When you reach level 48, you may consider making some super antipoison potions instead of super attacks. They will be useful.

Level 52 - 55

Super energies should your primary potion here. You may also start discarding Tarromins and stop using Harralanders (but still keep them for Harralander Tars). Ignore all other potions until level 55.

Level 55 - 66

Super Strength should now be included in your potion mixing schedule. Do not make any new potions you encounter until you reach 63, which you may farm Snapdragon herbs for Super Restore potions. If you do not wish to, stick to Super Strengths, Super Energies and Super attacks until 66.

You can add in that if you really want to wield a weapon on entrana, you can use the tool leperchaun to bank your magical or non magical seceteurs. Hop to entrana and grab them from the lep and wield. I'm not sure how much of a combat bonus it is exactly though

Trying to get a new sig... Idea's anyone?

Very nice guide but theres a easier way to get unicorn horn if your willing to risk the wilderness. In the Dark Forest theres about 5 or 6 and you can get them all down to below Lvl 20 because its multi-combat. Then you tele to Varrock and repeat. I think its faster than punching them to death on Entranta.

Yes but with the ancient you'd have to use either an external teleport or Kharyll Teleport which could run to be very expensive when used with Carallangar. Might be viable if they ever release blood and soul runecrafting but till then I'd recommend Dareeyak and walking from there.

Another option is to use the obelisks to get around but I don't know which corner takes you there.

I don't know if you're taking suggestions, but I have a couple.

First, for white berries - you can canoe into the wilderness to level 35, and it's not too far a walk from there to the whiteberry spawns. It provides a good alternative to farming, and for people who haven't done the quests required for elf teleport crystals. Simply canoe to level 35, collect, run down to level 30, glory to Edge, and repeat. Energy pots are useful to ensure you can run the whole time you are in the wildy. An antifire shield is a good precaution, in the off-chance a red dragon attacks you.

For eye of newt, I often just run from the fally west bank to taverly herblore shop through the shortcut, tele back to fally, bank, repeat. Running from draynor to Betty's, buy, glory back to Draynor, bank repeat is another quick method.

In the wilderness, there is a unicorn spot, not far in the wilderness. Like level 12. There are tons of black unicorns here just waiting to be slaugthered. It isn't a Pk'ers hotspot, so just take a glory, a weapon and some strenght boosting thing, like a berserker helmet and go kill them. Use the glory to teleport back. The walk isn't that far and can easily be made with about 70% energy.

There is also a good spot in varrock sewers. Although its a pretty long way going there, the 2 spawns are fairly quick in a decent crowded world and by bringing a varrock teleport, you won't have to bother walking all the way back.

Hope it helps you a little bit. Good luck with the guide. You just gave me a great idea about the taromorins. I completely forgot that they can be used for the serum! I gave away 3k herblore experience, because I forgot that. But never more in the future, so in my opinion. This is alreadya a Great guide.

12pure34 unless they've added a new bunch to the wilderness then the unicorns you're talking about are the ones I've already posted about. And they're found in about lvl 20-25 wilderness ina multi-combat zone. And as far as I know there are no unicorns in the Varrock Sewers.

Chen will be making an update tomorrow, or as he says. He's having too much fun killing those "dangerous" beast that can only hit 12s max (confirm this for me someone) when melee prayed. Skeleton Wyren or something like that.
