Wrong forum, but I would like to share my advice.

Education and your social life comes first, leisure comes second. Don't be focused on be 'amazing' in Runescape because that won't benefit your real life in any way. I'm not saying you shouldn't play the game, but set limits for yourself. We're not machines that work/study without rest. Everybody needs a break to go do something else rather than studying, but as I said, set your limits.

Well, for me depending on how hard and the amount of my homework I'll often do it while doing a 'semi-afk' skill, I'll do something like fishing and woodcutting while I do homework, study.. etc, multi-tasking FTW!

As for your social life, hang out with your friends, go to school, eventually get a job and all that good stuff. A social life is more important then having that extra fishing level, or item you desire, keep that in mind.

Just remember, Runescape is a GAME. Don't let it run your life, in the end it's merely something you may look back on and say "What the heck, why did I waste my time here" or you may not. It's just how you see it.

Edit: Make friends with someone who will call you non-stop so eventually they'll drive you mad and you'll have to come outside, it helped me alot. Women also work there (also helped me!). :D

You don't enjoy going out!? If I could I'd spend every living moment away from my house and with my friends

The way I balance my life...

School/friends tie for first. That's what I dedicate almost all of my time to. Next up is you guys. I spend a decent amount of time on TIF/my forums because there's almost always something to talk about and really make me think. Soon a job will be taking that place however. I've almost completely cut gaming out of my life. You say you want to have free time to play Runescape and get better at it. I recommend spending less time on there. You said you're 15 so I'm going to suppose you're a freshman. You might not see a whole lot of fun in school but it seems most freshman don't. Trust me, having a good social life will benefit you through all your high school years. Going through high school with a poor social life (replaced by gaming) wouldn't be much fun. You'll benefit more from having a lot of friends than from getting level 99 in all your skills.

Now I know you could care less about what I have to say about cutting down on gaming time but think of this..

In 10 years would you rather have:

a) A group of close friends who you can count on for anything for years to come

or

B) All of your skills to level 99 on a game that may have been shut down

If that's a difficult choice to make, you've got a lot of thinking to do.

Edit:

Edit: Make friends with someone who will call you non-stop so eventually they'll drive you mad and you'll have to come outside, it helped me alot. Women also work there (also helped me!). :D

Heh, I usually begin to resent people who call too much. However girls are a great way to get you out of the house. My closest group of friends consists of 4 girls and 3 guys (including me). I consider the 2 guys to be my best friends (I've known them since 6th/7th grade) and the girls are definitly near being considered my best friends (one of them is my gf).

The major rule (at least for me): Life comes before RuneScape. RuneScape will always be there, some things in life won't. I usually do my homework while playing, so I can take of school things while doing something else.

Same here. As soon as I get home from school I go out with my friends. There's nothing better than hanging out with friends.

97/99 Defence : 99 Fletching : 99 Woodcutting

Make sure to work out 2 or 3 times a week. No excuses.

Make sure to always get your schoolwork done.

If someone invites you to do something and you are playing the game turn the game off every time. Never let a game keep you from hanging out with people in real life.

That's what I do and it works for me.

I may not be the most qualified one to give life lessons, but -

Balance is freakin' important.

Really. Balance your work and your play - you need to get your work done, but you need to relax also. If something's fun for you, do it, but don't let it dominate your life and time.

Play Runescape when you're bored, when there's no obligations and nothing social you could do, when there's some free time, you've been working, and you need to relax.

Just remember - balanced work-to-play ratio. If you want to make the "play" part of that be Runescape, fine. Just balance it with work, and in fact, it's better as a "balanced work-play-socialism" ratio. Let work be schoolwork, and also real-life skill training - work out! study! practice things you think you'll need to know how to do later. Try taking up an instrument, it's fun! Band is a cool elective. Balance this out with play - Runescape, sports, whatever. Add socialism to the mix - hang out with friends when you can, if there's actually something worth doing going on. If you don't have a GF, get one - if you do, spend time with her.

This is all advice I'd beneifit from following, and currently am working on following, and have found out mostly myself. You could at least try it, I bet there's other people more qualified to advise though.

In parting, a quote from a cool guy on another forum (he's the lead art guy for the game, has a great sense of humor, has a life, and is all-around cool):

Jetryl[/url]":10a2gn5v]I'm happy to chill with people who actually do more in their lives than play halo, get paid, and try to get laid. They're actually ... interesting. And they stay interesting because they do new things with their lives....legitimately criticize a certain clique of kids in town; who, almost every night, would just sit around* at this one street corner, doing nothing. Our criticism was "hey, you're losers. (because you're doing nothing with all these years of your life)". I really don't think she'd really pondered why I didn't form close friendships with complete douchebags at the time, though.

...whew, why do my posts tend to end up as these big, long, hairy things? I start off replying to someone and I end up writing an essay...

Gaming should always come last, as deloria said.

I still "game" because I still have time for it and still enjoy it, so why not? Always make sure you're doing it out of fun and enjoyment though, not compulsion.

If there are people who you get on with at school and you've found a good group of friends who you enjoy being around for god's sake don't neglect them and make the most of them. It's a rare gift. If there aren't, don't worry about it. A common myth is that your school friends stick with you for life, which is untrue. I know lots of people with fantastic social lives which were never founded at school. Indeed, they maintain contact with maybe only a couple of people from school. Don't look for friends at school just for the sake of it.

Gaming when you have the extra time for it is ok as long as you've made sure you have a balance of everything else. I still game a little bit but it's maybe an hour a day if I even touch a controller.

Honestly, I'd suggest quitting runescape. It is the ultimate in this game, and the most looked up to.

Lol, I quit the game, and people don't look up to me, no where close. Those who don't play anymore see me as a regular person, and those who play, if you've seen me in General P2P, hate my opinions about the game. The main one being my lack of respect for mindless clicking and wasting one's life, but that's another story.

If you love the game, don't quit. It probably won't work anyways. Though, if you want to quit, I suggest gradual decline in playing, such as shaving off the max hours per day every week (ille est, start at 5 hours MAX a day, next week make it 4, next 3, 2, 1, 0). If you just want to play less stop at 2 or 1 hours max a day; you don't have to go to 0 using this method.

I'd also suggest joining a club at school, as that is a good way to meet people and have fun with them without having to try too hard.

If this is a kid, which I'm guessing is true, maybe he could just join a sports team, though he doesn't have to. Working out is no where close to being as important for kids and teenagers as it is for adults. I mean, I havn't worked out or played a sport (except once a week indoor soccer, which ended a month+ ago) since Varsity soccer conditioning last summer-fall, and I'm in fine shape, still got my abs lol. Basically it's really not all that important for kids and teenagers to work out as much.

Never procrastinate. I know, easier said than done, but that's what keeps me from achieving my goals.

Also, I disagree that you should just stop gaming if someone calls. If someone phones you and you don't want to do whatever they want to do, why the deuce should you give up having fun to go somewhere and have less fun?

I'll bet you anything that half of you guys that say, "go outside, exercise, runescape is lame and wont get you anywhere in life" have no life and are just saying that too look cool and smart.

I advise you don't ask people who play Runescape this question..it's not the best way to get a correct answer.

You're right. People don't often look up to others for quitting games. The only person who's really glad I pretty much quit is my gf because that means I have more time for her. Other than that, nobody else cares.

I actually recommend going cold turkey and finding something else to occupy yourself (without video stimulation). That's how I got off video games and after you've gotten used to finding other things to do, video games won't be as entertaining.

It might not be as important for teens to work out as it is for adults, but why not get into great physical condition when that's what the opposite sex is looking for? I don't mean to be shallow or anything, but he's in high school and we all know guys want the best looking girl and visa versa.

I advise you don't ask people who play Runescape this question..it's not the best way to get a correct answer

I don't play Runescape. A lot of people in Off Topic don't play Runescape. The generalization that everyone on these forums plays Runescape is getting really old.

He says he doesn't enjoy going out with friends. So if he doesn't stop gaming to go out with friends then he's not going to get a balance because he won't give up the fun he's having to be with friends.

Really? 'Cause I've seen a lot of people at General P2P make a quitting thread and try and go cold turkey, and most of them were back within a week. Then again, I wouldn't know the best method, I quit kinda differently. The SODB wanted me to get 94 Mage, I hated training but after forcing myself for about 2 months at PC I got it. Basically for my last month of playing I hated the game, but played it so much (as everyone really wanted me to get the mage level) that I drove the nail that was the my hate of Runescape deeper and deeper in. Now it's so deep in that there's not a tool in the world that could get it out  .

Basically, I have no data on either method being more efficient, but I've seen a lot of people try and go cold turkey, and fail. Meh, try both ways, "cold turkey" first. If it doesn't work, try my method. If that doesn't work, well, you're screwed.
