Too much censoring on TV?

Featured Replies

I hate how much things on tv are censored...

more ppl would enjoy tv if it wasnt so censored..everyone has at least heard the "F" word and the "S" word . i bet the the FCC are cussing up a storm everyday.whats next... being arrested for cussing in public? i would be screwed if that happened. I though about getting 20,000 ppl in my town to sign a petition to ban censors.

Cursing is stupid. It may be an effective way to let out anger, but to me it says, "I'm not intelligent enough to think of a better adjective, so I'll just stick with crap[bleep]".

Besides, what's wrong with censors?

It's not that it's a bad adjective, but they [used to] be strong, "biting", emotional words, making using them actually have an impact in a conversation- if you dropped an f-bomb, there wasn't another word to explain the emotion you were feeling at the time. Nowadays, the f-word is used more than common articles.

Some of the censoring is overdone, but at least curse words are slowed down by censoring.

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

Meh, it's not really an issue here. South Park is shown at 5pm.

some censors are annoying but others are necessary although what really annoys me is when instead of just covering up the word they cut out entirely

That's funny. The majority of adults believe that TV has gotten too uncensored lately. While I'm against censorship, you gotta keep in mind that kids have access to TV's and probably shouldn't be exposed to that kind of stuff.

Oh, and it's not as easy as just getting some petitions to ban censors. Censors are nationally regulated and it would be impossible for you to do anything about it. Just get some premium channels if you really want to watch uncensored stuff.

Oh and by the way, just how legitimate is that link in your sig?

I think kids SHOULD be "exposed" to all this stuff.

Personally, I've been watching R movies since I was very young, hearing curse words, knowing about a lot of things. I've known about drugs, alcohol, sex, and plenty of details about all of them for much longer than most of my peers.

I mean seriously. If anything, it lets kids deal with things over time...

And guess what? I'm not going crazy because I just discovered alcohol or drugs, I'm not screwing every girl because I finally discovered I have genitalia yesterday, and I'm not cursing up a storm because I just figured out these words get reactions out of people. As a matter of fact, I almost never curse, I never drink/drugs, and I'm a pretty decent guy (if I do say so myself).

Let kids know. They will someday. Proper parenting will ensure that kids can "deal with" such real world topics in a mature way...

Not to mention war and killing is so often put on TV...why can't they curse?

*sigh* I've never liked censorship.

Expand your mind.

I wish there was the option to order whatever channels you wanted and not have to pay for the rest. That would solve a lot of issues. Each channel would be on a per channel subscription basis so if no one ordered it there would be no viewers and thus no advertisement money available so crummy channels would be allowed to pass away and I wouldn't have to waste my time flipping past them.

In this scenario if you wanted a channel that was all cussing all the time 24 hours a day then if the market could support it then you could have it and no one that didn't want it would have to pay money to support it... heh

What goes in, comes out.

This is more of a moral issue than anything. I mean seriously if you hear cuss words all the time on t.v. you don't necicarily (sp?) cuss outloud, but you have to admit you cuss in your mind or think about cussing. IMHO, i hate hearing cuss words much less like saying them, so censors are good for me.

I don't think everything should be uncensored but the swears commonly used shouldn't be.

That's an individual case. Personally I don't think an impressionable mind of a five year old should be watching that kind of stuff. I'm sure they'll turn out fine either way like you did, but they should be watching spongebob, not naked people getting raped/killed/shot at while dropping every swear word imaginable. I'm normally against censorship but kids shouldn't be exposed to that.

Nor are they. There's only a few words left that are censored now. And depending on the time, on cable, no words are censored.

you know just because people know the words doesnt make it right to say them.

and no the censors are good. om MTV they cuss about 3 times every 5 sentences. and have you seen the show cheaters? those are 2 excellent reasons why the censors are there

It's funny when they censor their mouths when they say a swear word. I mean WTF? Can you even figure out of the swear word? That's just ÃÆÃâÃâüber stupid and pointless.

While i'm glad you wasn't effected to much by it, that doesn't mean every kid in the same situation will take it like you did. Can you account for all the millions of children who may decide to take the word to heart?

Obviously you don't know much about kids. You may be an exception, but kids are renowned for "monkey see, monkey do." If they see it, then generally they'll do it, so its going to increase violence and abusive language letting kids be influenced by bad language and violence at a young age. They say (scientific researchers) the most influential part of a persons life is between something like 4-13 years (roughly) so being exposed to such things at that age isn't going to do the person any favors later on in life. That's why good parenting is so important.

Not if the parents are smart enough to tell them not to say that stuff / ect. early on, trust me; say you said 'what the hell' when you are young and your parents tell you not to, it leaves a mark.

I know many people with similar stories to gonpost's and they're perfectly fine.

Well I don't think they can exactly get away with uncensoring porno on public TV. There's a reason why most of the time you gotta pay extra for the channels that uncensor that stuff.

Anyways porn is a nasty habit and can make you obsessed because you saw some chick's breasts. Oh and we don't want to turn into one of those 46-year old virgin-perverts like the head coach at my school, now do we?

Oh and about the offensive language they bleep, they don't bleep all of it. They might bleep when someone drops lots of f-bombs because it is such a strong, negative word.

This is on censoring profanity and the like, not nudity.

What you think of the F word depends on how you were brought up with it. If your parents say that that is a nasty, terrifying word from a young age then you are more likely to think that way on it.

:? I think some people here have the mentality "Its tabooed, so it must be cool!". I could care less about censorship. I watch TV for the content. Heck, i don't even watch much TV anymore save for the odd show and the discovery channel or news.

By the way, they blur out people swearing for those that can read lips.

Then why in anyones right mind would you allow your kids to see stuff like that, if you're just going to tell them not to do it. And just because a parent tells them not to do it, most of the times, especially if they've seen it (i.e on tv) their going to be influenced by it and still do it.

If it was such a good idea, then why wouldn't everyone do it. Because it's not. It does more harm than good for a little kid. Surely you wouldn't think that you would know better?

I'm not saying to have them watch only profanity. That can be applied to any other type of entertainment.

If they do it at all, all the parent has to do is restrict use of entertainment until they've learned their lesson, it'll leave a mark.

It does no harm to the kid, it's just sounds, it's the parent who was brought up thinking that those sounds are evil who is thinking it's harmful.

How is censoring a TV show by removing parts of the audio and visuals a proper replacement for a parent saying "No Johnny, you can't watch this show, you're not old enough"?

(Besides which, censoring a curse word and leaving the imagery can in some movies be described as nothing but laughable)

They don't censor movies. But I see your point on TV. Like say someone said, "You're a *beep*!" We don't know what word he used, there's tons out there, and this could even hurt the plot of the show.

about the whole censoring thing i think that after a certain time when the kids have gone to bed their really is no need for it. most people watching at say 10pm are old enough not to be shocked and offended by such things. and after all they can always switch over.
