  1. Last night I watched The Big Heat. I quite liked this, I like film noir generally but this was a bit tougher in its violence* than I expected and I enjoyed the way that nobody could be fully trusted. [hide=]* The burns on Gloria Grahame's character's face were well done, they reminded me of Ralph Fiennes' burns in The English Patient.[/hide]
  2. It seems everyone of his movies have been better than the ones I watched before. My first experience was with A Film Trilogy by Ingmar Bergman Criterion Collection (Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light and The Silence). I didn't really like it all that much, but it did look great. It was black and white but everything just looked great. Then I saw Wild Strawberries, and that one I enjoyed, but still not quite my style. After that was The Seventh Seal, and that I really liked. But the last one I saw was Fanny and Alexander and I thought that was better than any of the others. So in conclusion: watch Fanny and Alexander. It's on the Bergman part of my to do list along with Summer with Monika, The Serpent's Egg, Through a Glass Darkly, Cries and whispers and Winter Light.
  3. I'm guessing that's why your gir- nevermind. You could put him to work harvesting the corn and beans. Lol, that was just cold.
  4. This week I've been watching the Ingmar Bergman season on Film4. They showed; The Seventh Seal (obviously) Persona Scenes From A Marriage Wild Strawberries The Virgin Spring Summer With Monika (which I missed) Smiles of a Summer Night Summer Interlude I won't give individual reviews because I can't be bothered and it's just about 2am here. Anyway, I enjoyed the season for the most part although I didn't think Summer Interlude was as good as the others and I'm still scratching my head thinking about Persona (which isn't a bad thing actually). I had seen a few before (Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries & Scenes from a Marriage) and they benefit from repeat viewings, so I would presume the others will. I'm still irritated that I missed Summer with Monika as I hadn't seen it before. I might get a few of these on DVD and look up some more Bergman. He's one of those directors I put off looking into because of his reputation of being morbid and depressing (which now seems a little unfair) but this little season has piqued my interest in him just as Film4's Jean Pierre Melville season got me interested in him (JPM is now one of my favourites).
  5. I'll support anything that will get rid of /b/ and 4chan. Also, how the hell is an i-9/11 supposed to work? It sounds like a form you'd fill in at the post office; "You'll need to fill in an i-9/11 form to do that."
  6. No, you suck. [/thread]
  7. I'd vote for Paris Hilton. Did anyone see her "campagin ad"? It was surprisingly funny.
  8. Maybe in a poll on an internet forum but in real life rap would win considering that it is the biggest selling single genre of music today. I say that not as somebody trying to say rap is better as I like both genres. I knew this thread turn out like this, I can only see this ending in a lock.
  9. Another rap bashing thread.....bravo on the originality =D>
  10. I know what he meant, I just disagree.
  11. Well, I've got a PS3 and haven't encountered any downtime, the servers are fast even at peak time (apart from PES 2008 but that is Konami's fault) and haven't encountered people using cheat programs. I don't understand this argument (and it's not just in reference to the post above) that PS3's servers will have more cheats because it's free, $50 a year isn't going to magically prevent cheats. That being said, the 360 is an equally decent console, the only thing the PS3 has over it is Bluray, other than that there is little difference ($50 for Xbox live is nothing major) so I encourage you to buy whatever console most of your friends have so you can get a good online experience playing them.
  12. It's hardly a fortune.
  13. Wow. Just curious, where are you from? Scotland. You should see them here (Fife) then. They catch all the kids in the local park but they need 2 or 3 vans to get them all. Catching underage drinkers is the only thing that the police seem to do here. It's been their big initiative over the last 2 years or so.
  14. I saw it last night. It was alright, I liked the Ledger's Joker and I appreciated how it aspired to be a little more than a regular comic book films by trying to deal with a few wider contemporary issues (surveillance, terrorism etc.) even if they were put across in a preach way at times (the whole conversation between Batman and Fox had my rolling my eyes a lot), but at least it attempted to say something unlike most big budget blockbusters at the moment. I would say the film was worth my £5 but I probably wouldn't go to see it a 2nd time or buy it on DVD, a decent film but nowhere near as great as many have suggested. As for it being the IMDB number one film, I'd suggest that the film has been over-hyped by Ledger's death and that it has been great for marketing the film. Anyway in conclusion, it was better than most comic book films (which I admit aren't really my cup of tea) but it still didn't have the wow factor for me personally.
  15. So it's alright for everyone else, just not black men?
  16. Blues Brothers 2000 All of the sequels to Jaws (especially Jaws the Revenge) Rocky 5 (the one where he has the young protege) Look Who's Talking Too ...those are the ones that I can think of right now, I'll edit when more come to mind.
  17. I like Ennio Morricone's work on Segio Leone's films (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good the Bad & the Ugly, Fistful of Dynamite, Once upon a time in the West and Once upon a time in America). I like the soundtracks to a few Scorsese films especially Mean Streets, Raging Bull and Goodfella's. Bernard Hermann has a few brilliant one's - Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho and Taxi Driver especially. The soundtrack for Paul Schrader's film Mishima - A Life in Four Chapters is excellent. Phillip Glass did a brilliant job in making the music build and build for so long (feels like half an hour) until it reaches a frantic peak at the end of the film. Besides those the only other film that hasn't already been mentioned that I can think of is Forrest Gump. It's like a guide to 20th century rock & roll.
  18. It's still rape, all sex without consent is rape.
  19. Stuff like that happens to most people. I once had a dream where I was falling out of a hot air balloon, I woke up on the floor after falling right out of my bed - it hurt.
  20. Yeah lock requests can be annoying. I think a lot of the time they happen because the author of the thread hasn't gotten a positive response to their topic (ie when they make stupid topics and get flamed accordingly) and other times it feels like topics are locked on request because of genuine differences of opinion (even though that perception often may not be the case). In these cases, it often feels like a cop-out (by the OP) to avoid conflict when they haven't got their own way. Sometimes I'd rather see topics that are affected by flaming stay open and cleaned of the offending posts but to be fair to staff, that is a pain in the backside with so many topics and it takes time.
  21. Mel Gibson...
  22. I think there is a film version of War & Peace that is very long. Found a link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_and_Pe ... 68_film%29
  23. Well I do have some money as I have a savings bond that matures next month (when I turn 21), I'm using it for driving lessons. However, if I won the lottery though, I'd build a big house to my exact specification (it would have to have a club, a football pitch and a big cinema room) and an Aston Martin. After buying those and giving some to my family, I'd just use it to enjoy life - good food, plenty of holidays etc.
  24. Last night I watched Red Beard (aka Akahige) for the first time. I like Kurosawa's films but I'd never gotten around to watching this one. It's not for everyone, a lot of people would be put of by the length (3 hours & 5 minutes) but I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed how the plot drifts from the main plot about the young doctor & his mentor 'Red Beard' into the smaller stories about the patients that they are treating.
  25. As horrible as he was, Saddam was one of the most secular leaders in the middle east. While he was a devout Muslim privately, he hated religion in Iraq as it was an outside influence and a potential threat to his power - he had many clerics killed during his reign.
