The Future Of Runescape
Actually, in five or ten years tops, bandwidth speeds will be approaching 100-400GBps. Yes, that's Gigabytes. Transferring an average sized hard drive's contents in less than a second won't be a problem by then. In truth I think I may have been overgenerous with my five years estimate. If things continue with the lack of top-end support for higher levels, it'll lose two years off of my initial estimation, so 3 years. If it adds another restrictive rule such as rule 15 again, it'll lose another year off of that. If they outlaw fansites, they'll lose all but six months. By that time, the RS membership population will become stagnate and just drop off to other games. Don't know what to tell you, but from where I'm sitting, the future does not look good for Jagex or RuneScape.

The Future Of Runescape
At the rate that it's going, its renaissance is well behind it and doesn't ever hope to see a sequel. So I'm going to say five years tops. Perhaps all of the Java and C++ used to build the game will be ported over to a desktop version someday. But then it'd defeat the purpose of it being an MMORPG, don't you think...?

Do Jagex encourage poor grammar by their censoring? Discuss.
Do cellphones encourage bad grammar because of the obvious lack of ability to use full bodied words? More than likely. Does Jagex encourage bad grammar because of the filter? I doubt that. There's some things that aren't all that bad; a misplaced apostrophe here and an uncapitalized "I" there. But it's ultimately the players' responsibility to learn how to type full words either ingame or on fansites. Some words may come out as starred, but never fear: the thesaurus is here! (You could find one at http://www.m-w.com , if you ever needed it.) If you think about it, the cellphone doesn't allow for much of the "home row" feature, unless you have an overpriced phone with keyboard, which does nothing other than play music and take pictures (iPod and Canon, people). The computer, regardless of what language or keyboard layout (QWERTY or DVORAK), generally has a "home row" and the ability to type out full sentences even at < 20WPM isn't complex or really difficult. Each individual just chooses to type either full sentences, "txt-talk" or 1337-speak. I don't think the filter could be held responsible for that. If you're going to blame someone for this lack of grammar sense, place the blame where it's due. That's something that's well beyond Jagex's scope of control.

Since when did you acquire Jagex's agenda? I really wish people wouldn't be so pessimistic about certain things when it comes to game updates...

Tip.It Times Presents: The Good, The Bad and the...
It was an okay article, but I'd have preferred more research on the Dynamic Signature clause. In their current state, they are indeed illegal, but most dynamic signature makers are working on legal revisions to them. I believe that Draynor's working on a new version of theirs and RuneWeb recently pulled theirs off the site until they're compliant. I don't think a ban of these dynamic signatures when they are compliant would help, since they are one of the few ways that fansites can attract others to their site, but that's my opinion. While a lot of the other things that have been said in this article -- the game seems to be aimed at younger players -- may be true, evidence is only subjective there. What you may believe is good for the younger or inexperienced players, you may or may not know that a select handful of higher leveled players are benefiting from. It's still an okay article.

Farest Possible Point From a Bank?
Your choice: Northernmost point from Drakan's Castle (takes five-ten minutes walking if you don't know where you're going), or the Red Dragon lair in the Brimhaven dungeon.

AFK, when is it bad?
It's against the rules. That's what's wrong with it. Here's what happens if you go AFK in the game. You may or may not know how long you have to go away. You go away, thinking that it'll only be a second, then your character has a swarm that comes up. Too bad that not even Guthan would save you from that since you can't hit random events with its special... On top of that, some of us players kind of like to strike up a convo with someone that we're training with. Sorry if you had to go watch CSI or another show, but we'd really like to stay and chat. But then again, any AFKers that I usually find get reported. You really should stop. I think this forum has some sort of policy against saying you break rules.

Nice one Jagex-Quote DIRECTLY from Andrew
Edited to not sound so rough around the edges I politely request that you remove that signature, and let RuneWeb deal with the matter at hand. I'd rather the upper brass there talk it out instead of a group of rioters reflecting badly on us. Thanks.

Would you pay extra for better customer support?
I don't think that throwing more money to CS would fix much. If I had to pay more for this game than the usual $5, I'd just buy another MMO/CORPG that's graphically intense and free to play online instead.

"stuck up high levels" What do you think
High levels aren't "stuck-up", we're just sick and tired of getting the same questions asked when the information is freely available to everyone. Back a year ago, when I practiced my French more, I used to just type in that and throw everyone off. Nowadays I just give them colder answers such as "look at the KB" or "no I will not give you free stuff". I'm not going to bother wasting my time helping someone if they won't take the time out to help themselves. In certain situations, however, I'd help them no questions or qualms asked, namely the MEII light maze. Took a good fourteen hours on and off to finish that, but it was worth it to help a handful of people get through that nightmare. In general, if and when I deal on freeplay and abroad, my ignore list is my friend. I go by the "three strikes" philosophy; if you can't figure it out on your own in three tries, I'm done with it. (Hey, I'm a 116. Looks like I just narrowly dodged the submarine.)

Nerd or just plain bored?
To me it sounds like sheer boredom. Nothing wrong with that. "No-lifing", or its better and more appropriate term, "obsession", is a serious issue. As long as you know you're not obsessed (meaning you stay up late nights getting levels), then you're fine. Then again, everyone defines obsession and no-lifing differently. Personally I don't think that what you described comes even close; you have some free time out of your normally busy schedule and you'd like to spend it playing RuneScape. Go for it.

Why is "safing" bad?
Oh, safing isn't bad. They just want your rune or whatever you happen to be wearing in freeplay. It all boils down to greed. They want your things and they always will make up new "rules of engagement" to get them. Since these rules aren't even close to enforceable, all they can do is type "safer!1!11" as much as they want to...either before they run or teleport to safety. Don't let them get under your skin. Their rules of engagement do not and should not have to apply to you.

Is luring an acceptable practice?
While I do not and will never lure for any reason whatsoever, there are two sides to this tale. Reasons why it's acceptable: 1. The player is adequately warned before entering the Wilderness. Jagex has also commented on this before. 2. If the player knows better, the item in question is not normally at the price that they are receiving. Reasons why it's unethical: 1. It could be considered a form of item or trade scamming. You are indeed providing false information for an item, and attempt to gain their interest in a Wilderness area where they are prone to lose their things. 2. Players very seldom pay attention to warning signs posted in the Wilderness. While I believe that's their own doggone fault, many people will want Jagex to hold their hand on this matter. 3. Players are motivated to trade by greed. If you think about it, they're getting something discounted or something cheap that they wholeheartedly intend to resell for mass profit -- which ultimately leads to their own downfall. That's what I have to say on the matter.

Did miniclip destroy RuneScape P2P?
I don't think that Miniclip is to blame for the influx of immaturity, nor should anyone place prejudice on them for providing Jagex with better than "word-of-mouth" advertising. I think it is the RuneScape community's fault that people are being judged based on their levels and maturity rather than guide them and make them (by your definition) functioning members of the community. Quit pointing fingers. Pick up a toolbox instead and help fix your so-called problem.

Low Levels, why do you come to PC?
There's really not much to ask here. Why does anyone go to PC? For the easy levels. What you're thinking is that they slow you down. I don't think that they're entirely at fault. Just because you gave them a directive (which, mind you, is only loosely enforceable at best), does not mean that they are or were at fault for losing that game. Often times, friends have told me that the higher levels were the ones that did dumber things and were less coherent than the lower levels were. You also have to understand that while separate clans for Pest Control may help you get up higher and quicker, it also detracts heavily from the spirit of the game. They try and join up to gain the same benefits that you have -- who gave you or a group of people the right to take that away from them? I realise I'm ranting now, so I'll stop with the rhetoric. I hope you can see my point.

Are you a "Old Timer" or a "RS2 product"?
My file was created in October of 2002. Didn't get really active until late April of 2003. Became member in May 2004, played actively ever since. So yeah, I'm an old timer.

Back then in Runescape 2...
I remember when RuneScape actually had some nostalgia going; it was so strong that mining was actually FUN and not a chore! (The Way-back-when days) I remember when Falador was not so bright. I remember a time before RuneCrafting. I remember struggling to get to 40 ranged, then getting 70 in literally two weeks. I remember when they had that gigantic red "PLAY" button in the centre of their website. I remember when I first saw the animated login screen of RuneScape2. I was seriously hyped up then. I remember (a brief period of time) when freeplay could report RS2 bugs as they found them. (I know because I made one or two.) I remember when there was less than 40K players. I remember when there was less than 30K players. "" "" "" "" "" "" "" 25K players. I remember when Rune was expensive. I remember when you had to struggle for 15k experience an hour at any melee training spot. I remember fatigue and sleeping bags. I remember that sleeping bags were once a part of RS2 for a bit. Instead of that annoying word entry system, a one-click bit and your fatigue was gone. Very neat. I wish I had of taken a picture of an RS2 sleeping bag; that'd be awesome to have somewhere. ------ That's all I can remember. :(

Weekly Poll: Do you use a third-party client to play RS?
I've never really felt the need for a third party client. All that I really need to do in RuneScape is provided by either Firefox or Jagex's client. Since I'm on a Linux box half the time I do things online, using anything third party would be time consuming and really not worth it to me. Besides that, even if I did have the chance to use one I wouldn't. You can never trust a third party source, regardless of what anyone else says. I can access RuneScape just fine from my browsers, why would I need another program to do that? (Oh, and I use mIRC/XChat in separate windows as well. Both work fine just the way they are.)

All discussion here: Jan 2, 2006 - Rule 7 and Rule 9 Updated
Before the thread is closed and before you all host a celebration party, let me leave you with a few of these words. You may think that this is perfectly fine. You may think that it will abide with the rules. I regret to inform you that something may happen to all client users that shouldn't come as much of a shock. Have you ever read RuneScape's Terms+Conditions? Firstly, before I get into the nitty gritty, I'd like to call your attention to this: As far as I understand it, this FAQ page hasn't been updated in several years. This turn of events only happened recently, but why is everyone so quick to ignore the fine print of their contract that they implicitly signed with Jagex? (And yes, you did sign a contract with them when you created an account with them.) Per that clause, then the following is bound to happen as well: That's right. Per your legally-binding contract with Jagex, you can actually lose your account over something as simple as convenience. Do you want to lose all those hours that you spent in the Fight Caves? Do you wish to lose all that time spent in the Mining Guild just so you could hit 85? Do you wish to lose any more of your RuneScape memories, or would you rather not risk it? You have to realise that Jagex as a company can and will decide what clients you may or may not use to connect to their servers, either for their security or yours. Take advantage of their patience with you and err on the side of caution. But, if you choose not to, and I wasted a lot of my energy talking, these forums shouldn't be cluttered with "OMFG I GOT BANNED FOR USING THIS CLIENT". Oh, one last note: This will be an interesting month indeed. I wish you all the best (of luck).

No, you cannot. If it has been hard-coded by Jagex themselves, how the heck is it an "unfair advantage"? I'm talking about third party clients; get with the times.

All discussion here: Jan 2, 2006 - Rule 7 and Rule 9 Updated
Personally, I'd be more comfortable if you ran mIRC, and Firefox/IE with tabs to each of those things. It may seem a bit crowded, but it's best to err on the side of caution. What am I debating this for anyway...this is your account. Take your chances with it. Just don't tell me to try something out that I feel could very well jeopardise the security, integrity and legality of my account.

Before I get into good ol' rhetoric here, I'd like to state that if this client took on the normal functionality of a browser - meaning no extra toolbars, no stat lookup, no NOTHING, make it behave just like a browser, then and only then would I not see it as a 3rd party client advantage. Convenience at the cost of violating a rule/exploiting a grey area? Alright then. I won't debate it with you beyond that point. Thanks for respecting my decision, but under no premise am I aruging about security. I'm only debating about the long standing rule that Jagex has written (and enforced so many times) that is being trampled over. You can tell me it wasn't against the rules because it didn't give you an advantage, but it was meant to. It makes things somewhat convienent, as muggiwhplar said himself. Convenience can be seen as an unfair advantage to those of us that don't trust this source. Again, I care not for security, but for the integrity of the rules that Jagex has set before us. Doesn't anyone really pay attention to those anymore? Or is everyone still hell-bent on looking for a loophole to keep using this program? If you type 30WPM, perhaps you should take typing courses. People pay secretaries somewhat near $13.75/hr if they type over 55WPM or even higher. You can also always upgrade your internet line to DSL at least. Lastly, this is what Mod Burgess had to say about the rioters: 1. The medium-high level gear you've described (Mage short, Iban Staff, Dragon Dagger) all were earned through hard work using the LEGITIMATE way, NOT through a third party. 2. The abilities that I have acquired throughout the game are a direct result of me training them up tirelessly, and not through a third party. 3. If you want to be a high level, you're stuck with two options: Do it the long way or become a member. This again, has NOTHING to do with a third party client.

Technically, a keylogger is NOT a virus. So a virus-specific scan may not pick them up. The good ones, will. I said "virus-specific" scanners, not "virus scanners". Of course a couple of decent "complete" scanners out there will pick them up.
