SSD vs HDD
Well, this is my second SSD since an older OCZ drive. I had to return the OCZ because it used a JMicron controller and stuttering became an issue. A week or so ago I picked up a new Intel X25-M G1 SSD from a friend for $150. While it's not the latest drive from Intel, I couldn't justify paying $100 more ($70 if you look at the MSRP) to the price gouging companies such as Newegg, Tiger Direct, OWC, etc. The newer drive uses a cheaper 34nm MLC flash which translates into decreased latency and faster random write times. That being the only hardware difference I am aware of, the only other difference lies in software. Intel is either stubborn about releasing TRIM support for the G1 drives or the old drive's controller physically isn't capable of receiving the commands. Either way, TRIM is only supported on Windows 7 (Linux?) and isn't supported on OS X. If you don't know what TRIM is, it is a command given by the OS to the SSD that deletes a file immediately after the file has been flagged for deletion. Without TRIM, the files are flagged for deletion but aren't erased until all of the available space is used up. This means that, should one run out of space, the fast write times are going to slow because the drive has to erase the flagged files prior to instilling new information. HDD or SSD without TRIM: User "deletes" file -> the HDD/SSD flags the file for deletion -> user attempts to write new data -> flagged deletion file is erased -> new data is written TRIM: User "deletes" files -> file is erased -> user attempts to write new data -> new data is written Either way, the same process is being done, but TRIM moves the deletion to the period right after the file is flagged and thus there is no interruption during a crucial write. However, if an SSD ever becomes full, the flash can be emptied in BIOS or EFI, reducing the need for TRIM. But I shall digress from the intricacies of flash based media and move on to results. An application known as XBench was used to benchmark both Apple's stock 5400RPM drive, a Fujitsu MHZ2250BH and Intel's X25-M. While XBench does not judge latency or IOPS, I don't really care to hunt down a program for those specifics; I believe this to be enough. Intel: Sequential Access - Read: up to 250MB/s Sequential Access - Write: up to 70MB/s I would say that it came darn close to what it promised. Fujitsu: 5400RPM; couldn't find data on read/write I also used this as an excuse to try out Numbers as I had yet to use it. I think I like Excel better, but that is besides the point. I have yet to experience any stuttering which strengthens my faith in the Intel controller. So far I am content with my purchase but only time will tell. Just thought I'd share my results with you guys.

A Surreptitious Sin
As I write this I am sincerely crying; the wet deviants flow onto my lap. Do not mistake this as an attempt to elicit sympathy, as that is not my intention. Rather, I hope that the expression of my sadness to someone-anyone-will ultimately end this unseasonable period of self-pity. I really could not care less if I do not know you in person or if you disagree with how I am feeling, you are a person and that is all that matters. There is this woman that I love, and that I have loved for some time. I have grown quite fond of her in such a short time, but I wish I did not, as it troubles me so. Her hair is kept short and the rich brown color is the envy of many. A set of hazel stars light up her face, further calling attention to her alluring hair. They sometimes trap me beneath their glow and an effervescent feeling wells inside of me; I cannot look away. And finally her enticing crimson lips are the source of my yearning. It is disheartening that she does not see me this way and that it may prove that she could never see me this way. Based on this fact, I am unsure why I have not looked away and moved on. At this point, I fear that it will not be possible. To you, the reader, your eyes have not deceived you, I do indeed love another woman. The only sort of solace I can take at this moment is in my sprained ankle, the swelling and raw skin that pulses evenly with my heart. I'm not sure what's worse, the fact that this proves to Adrenal that I am a masochist, or that I wish to twist my ankle in such a way as to distort it even more, so as to take more pleasure from it. Alas, suger o'er the Devil still leaves a bitter hell.

Then it was because your integrated graphics processor wasn't able to handle the demand. You should be getting much better performance now. :P

Increasing Start-Up Speed
To stop startup programs from running, look for "system configuration" in the search bar located after clicking the Windows button. When the program opens you will see five tabs; you're looking for startup. You will now see a sting of items with check boxes next to their name. "You can choose to disable some of these programs but before you do that please make sure you do not disable any important system components or drivers. You might damage the functionality of the operating system. If you are not sure on what you are doing it is better not to disable any startup programs. If you know what you are doing and which programs you want to disable, just uncheck the small box from the left side of the appropriate programs. When you have finished, click Apply and/or OK [1]" If you want, you can take a screenshot of the startup tab and we can tell you want you can disable.

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml If you look at this site through Safari, Firefox, Opera, Camino, etc, it will show the Java applet. Try it with Chrome and it is absent from the page. Same thing with games such as Runescape.

There was one released a couple of days ago, if you haven't checked Software Update in a while. Chrome still won't touch Java, which kills any chance of me using it at the moment. Unless of course I'm doing something wrong and user error is to blame. Have you gotten Chrome to display Java?- Prices for looks? Really?
I wouldn't have used the word 'extinct' in that context, but I'll spare the semantics. While I agree that people are social animals (and as you said, do not-perhaps cannot-live without social interaction), I would be prepared to argue against the statement that I quoted from your post. There are numerous examples of civilizations in the real world which, at one point, were isolated by the surrounding geography or by choice. Perhaps the most notable of the latter example would be the Chinese civilizations. Despite being in a caught in a constant renewal of a dynastic cycle, dictated for some time by the mandate of heaven, and an era of feudalism, I would not go so far as to say that the Chinese went extinct. Admittedly, it has been a while since I have studied Chinese material and while the specifics might have blurred from my perception, I do know two things: China was isolated for a long period of time and they, nor their traditions, are extinct. Isolationism can bring many harmful results and it may be difficult to see the favorable products, but I would be prepared to argue that isolationism does not always equate or result in extinction of any groups, peoples, or traditions.- Delete please
Could you change the color of the font? It is not readable on the Tip.it theme.- Computer won't read my flash drive.
It would be highly coincidental, but it could have failed after reinstallation and in this case a hardware problem is the easiest to rule out. Although, "starting over from scratch" is a bit loose. Did you reformat and/or reinstall Windows, Spoofer? Or just wipe a bunch of files? http://www.golfblogger.com/index.php/19thhole/comments/when_your_computer_wont_recognize_your_flash_drive/- Excuse the odd question, but...
Indeed, I was thinking that your colleague lied to elicit some sort of reaction. It would be odd that the person that informed you would notice such an anomaly.- Tip.it, Australia needs your help!!
Feel free to promote your cause in this sticky. |^_^|- Computer won't read my flash drive.
Flash drives have short lifespans with a maximum read/write count. Have you plugged in this flash drive into another computer to make sure that it works?- Google Chrome Extensions -- Now Live
Still waiting for a proper Java plugin for OS X.- After a long hiatus from RS..I'm back
Welcome back! :) There have been a lot of updates lately and the folks in Help & Advice might be able to help you out in that department. You might even be able to shift through the first few pages to find a similar thread. If you want to reintroduce yourself, feel free to post in the stick above, "Introduce Yourself to Tip.it!!!" ;)- Five New Global Moderators
I would disagree, as it depends on the sections of the forum you visit. But to each their own. :) Congratulations everyone.- Adding another hard drive question.
If it's showing up in BIOS but not in My Computer you have to initialize it. Is there an alternative method?- New Herb Patch?
That is a bummer considering the rise in herbs lately. :o I have locked this thread, as you have received your answer.- This is my version of multitasking...
Being a board moderator in T&C, I don't think it would do much good there. People who do not frequent T&C only drop in when their computer is acting up and the majority of those who do frequent T&C do not play Runescape. I don't run Windows, so I'll stick with Exposé. :P- Multiple Monitors
Depends on your resolution, but not really. My laptop has a 1280x800 resolution and my external monitor is 21.5" at 1080x1920. I had a third monitor (17", I don't remember the resolution) hooked up using a USB port, but the lag got to me so I disconnected it. It would be okay for keeping a something like a music player on there, but it was too slow even for word processing. So now I'm left with two displays, which is good enough for me at the moment.- Adding another hard drive question.
You would have to reinstall your operating system on the drive that you want to be primary, which is, in its own, a way of formatting the drive. So unless you just want the bigger drive to have the OS on it, you could just add it as a second or third drive and format it through Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management. There you will see a column with all partitions of your system, including installed HDDs and you can format the unusable drive. Here's a link to a site with the specific of how to format a new drive on Windows XP. The process should be similar for Vista, but I haven't tried formatting for Windows 7.- Adding another hard drive question.
oh cool. i'm asking this because i remembered when i plugged a western digital 400GB in to recovery data(the OS on that hard drive is messed up), my computer starts to respond real slowly etc..and the drive won't show up. But maybe that's just the drive's problem. If it is not the primary drive you are installing, I believe that you have to initialize and format the drive before it becomes usable. Though, I am not sure if you did this or not. Did you want to correct the problem you just mentioned, with the drive not being recognized? - Google Chrome Extensions -- Now Live
