Well, I want a computer.
You're original statement did not imply that. I was simply trying to point out that a computer bought today may not run the latest video games in two years. Of course a computer that fits your needs today should fit those same needs in two years, but that wasn't what I took out of your statement.

Well, I want a computer.
Perhaps it would be most effective to first understand the parallel, as others have pointed out. I was showing you that all hardware manufacturers already have their roads paved and planned. The only future-proofing to be done is to buy a newer CPU, loads of RAM, an SSD, etc, all of which cost an arm and a leg at this point. But even if you were to pay the premium now, prices only get lower from this point on. At this time you face a difficult decision-to buy or wait. If you buy now, you're paying more than it will be worth in a few months time, but if you wait you'll never have a computer. The only sound advice to give is to buy a computer when you need it. But as I was attempting to point out to you earlier with the given link, it is impossible to own a computer that is not obsolete. Hence my post was not "random."

If you had 200 BILLION Coins...
I would quit because then Runescape would no longer be of any enjoyment. But if I gave it away I would shoot myself in the foot.

Sorry, but everything you're looking at is already obsolete. http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20091113PD209.html

Laptop VS Desktop (college?)
I would wait two years before picking out a computer for college because it is likely that netbooks, notebooks, and desktops will not look the same. But for college, I really would stress a notebook. You can easily pick up a desktop with a powerful CPU/GPU to do most of what you would want to do on a desktop. I personally can't stand netbooks because of their small keyboard and tiny touchpad, not to mention you would have to constantly sync data with your desktop.

Technology Related Pictures
Being frequenters here in T&C, would you guys like to have the original Browser-related pictures thread back? That would be in addition to this one, as it includes pieces of technology other than computers.

Transfering Files Without Transferring Viruses?
I am not attempting to say that you are stupid, simply that having an antivirus other than Avira doesn't mean your system is any less secure. Resources are not a factor given the circumstances because the older machine would not likely be the user's primary computer. The statement about the difference in settings only proves to validate my stance on the matter because it is Avira, unlike AVG, who is not set at the highest setting by default. The PDF, while "nothing amazing," comes from an independent study and dates to less than six months ago. Please do not take this as a means to belittle you or your knowledge-you are a valuable and wise member of T&C and I am always glad to hear your input.

The reason for price droppings
There are several topics relating the the Runescape economy in this forum. This thread seems fits your discussion. You may repost your question there, although Master_Smither and other users have posts regarding the matter. :)

Transfering Files Without Transferring Viruses?
Just skimming over the date here, but Avira has a 99.4% detection rate and AVG has 94%, with Kapersky besting AVG slightly with 94.7%. The set contained 1.6 million malware samples to determine the accuracy-70% of which was made up of trojans. At these detection rates, however, Avira had nearly triple the amount of false positives versus AVG and Kapersky. Avira was able to scan through files at 14.4MB/sec while AVG slugged at 6.8MB/sec. What does this mean for the average user? Probably nothing. Avira has better detection rates and a faster scan while AVG has a lower number of false positives. Both are certainly viable anti-virus programs, and it has simply become a hackneyed view on these forums that AVG is garbage. The same goes for Symantec, where it fell in between AVG and Avira, beating Avira in the number of false positives, scanning rate (17.3MB/sec) and falling short by miniscule amounts in detection rates. I am doubtful that the items listed were all independent viruses, because depending on how you set it up, the AV program can detect tracking cookies which can be found hundreds of times in a computer. It may simply be that AVG was not set to list these items as anomalies. Regardless, both AV programs have something to offer that the other one does not and are thus equally viable choices when coming to consumer protection. It is also worth noting that NOD32 (which is highly praised on these forums) did worse in detection rates and had slower scanning times than either Avira or Symantec with its false positives greater than AVG. We all have our personal opinions on the software we use, but there are statistics to interpret up the facts. ;) PDF Cited

Transfering Files Without Transferring Viruses?
There isn't going to be a program that 'combs' out all of your files. Just download an antivirus like Avira or AVG and give it commands to search the files you want to transfer. But even the programs you mentioned should have picked something up, should an anomaly be present. If you're not having problems on this computer, there really shouldn't be a reason to worry that something will pop up on the newer one (based explicitly on the files you wish to transfer). The links and related downloads I supplied are safe. ;)

Windows 2000... I thought Microsoft was giving up?
I believe you're thinking of Windows ME. People use 2000 for many reasons. Alot of people (like Hawkxs) have parents who won't let them upgrade the computer to XP or Windows 7. Others don't see the need to upgrade as they only use computers for things such as email and storing pictures. Those people generally don't worry about viruses, as they only use the internet for emails. Yes, that was ME. I used to have a laptop with ME and it didnt look like much improvement over 98 SE besides the graphics. (Of course, I was still in grade school and didn't know much about computers back then.) I thought ME was 200? Since ME was meant to stand for Millennium aka 2000 ME was released in the same year. Maybe six or seven months following Windows 2000? Seven years? On your own personal computer? It had a slew of bugs that people still write about, even today.

Windows 2000... I thought Microsoft was giving up?
All Windows 2000 support including security updates and security-related hotfixes will be terminated on 13 July 2010. http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/?sort=PN&alpha=Windows+2000&Filter=FilterNO It just means that if some bug in Windows 2000 appears in August, it will not be patched. You can continue using the OS but you will not receive anymore updates from Microsoft for the OS itself.

Windows 7 out and ready for action
Even if you cannot surpass 4GB, I see no reason why you should be deterred from 64-bit. :)

Transfering Files Without Transferring Viruses?
There's a new feature in iTunes 9 called Home Sharing. You can enable it and download all of the songs on your old computer onto your new computer, even over WiFi. Not sure about the whole virus thing, though. I would have thought a virus scan (even with multiple different AV programs, but not at the same time of course) on the older computer would suffice.

Computer Freezes Randomly
I won't say that it won't work, but it's highly unlikely. More likely is that the scan would be interrupted anyway. Your best bet is to boot up into safe mode and try the scan again.

Not everyone responds to a virus, or anything else for that matter, in the same way.

Hidden Virus/Backdoor?
Have you tried a virus-specific application? Avira is free and has good detection rates.

Breathing
To all those who are scared, it is completely normal to breathe through one nostril at any given time. It is also possible to breathe through your ears. I have had this problem with several professionals documenting it. Previously, I have had several ear infections, P.E. tubes, and a perforated eardrum (after I hit my head on a goalpost).

Post all RS Screenshots, Videos, and Sounds here!
I never realised that! But I recall trying to remove the cloak to force me out, but the clothing would not come off. And all the times I've been present for the glitch, I was equipped with several millions worth of equipment so I have been reluctant to wait for a new game. It was taken before Runetek 5.
