Teenage school hacker might face 38 years in jail.
BlueLancer replied to pureprayer's topic in Off-Topic
Lol agreed. I think it's ridiculous how easily some people throw their lives away. Especially someone that young... I think 38 years is excessive but that doesn't mean I have much sympathy for him.. If you hack into the FBI's system they can lock you up forever in solitary confinement, so how the hell is this anything like that? Haven't seen the movie in question, but you're not looking at reality from an objective viewpoint. Everyone wants to benefit from any given situation with any means necessary. Putting highly skilled hackers to do nothing but socialize with organised criminals for years in a federal prison will eventually expose them to extortion or coercion, the information and know-how will be passed on to people outside of prison who will hack for purely financial purposes and cause further harm. It's also not uncommon for companies to hire hackers or ex.convicted hackers for security testing [1] due to their often superior technical knowledge. The FBI has nothing to gain and everything to lose in the form of further financial and strategical losses by dealing excessive prison terms against highly skilled hackers. They are actually pretty often offered a highly paid job either at an antivirus/firewall laboratory or company, or a government agency. Few companies hire burglars so they can observe their techniques to make a compound safer... Because even the lowliest common thugs can succesfully steal a TV set. The amount of people who can bypass NASA-level security can be counted in the dozens at most in the entire country & are very hard to find. Their skill can come pretty handy when the FBI has legal authority to make that hacker either work for them, or sit in a cell if he's convicted. -

Well, it's unlikely he will be convicted on all 69 counts, because due to his young age he can probably get a pretty good plea bargain & the prosecutor wont pursue conviction for "misdemeanor breaking and entering" and other smaller counts, and drop burglary etc. altogether since nothing physical was actually stolen -

Because altering computer files and school grades warrants double the penalty planning the murder of thousands of civilians gets you. Sometimes the american justice system seems like a total failure. What the kid did was morally questionable at best, in Europe he'd probably gotten off on misdemeanor/community service and maybe 1 year in jail maximum. 38 years is so grossly inappropriate punishment compared to the crime it's laughable. 38 years is more than twice the time he has even been alive on this planet & he harmed nobody physically or caused significant damage. -
In Opera it just opens feeds or if you do it with shift, nothing :P

Nah, Cowchicken got first 99 WC entirely in free worlds (some people insist Everdred), legit, that was around 2001-2002. Note this was when cutting all trees gave equal XP, and you had to select inventory+right click use on a hatchet+click the tree you wanted to cut. He personally flew his computer to the Jagex office for inspection back when Jagex was still a small company, and he was found innocent, there was no macros or deleted traces of them. Therefore he held both a 1st position ranger, plus created Slavik which was the 2nd character in the game to get 99 ranged. That's pretty impressive. He's not some kid either, he is married & used to own an import company in St. Petersburg: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.snake95.ru from which his username is also derived.

Nope. You can run a 4870+quad core on 500w without a problem. But, it's always good to go a bit over because it will make less noise and and the components will be working at lower C, but this doesn't effect the warranty nor the life-span of the product. Correct, 4870X2 requires a minimum power supply of 650W though http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd480 ... ments.html

Hell, it used to be mostly the US that went around putting bans on everything and suing people... In recent years it's also spilled in the GB society. You guys now have what, 10,000 public cameras around London to monitor everyone -.- It might improve security by a bit, but I just don't like the idea that someone is watching you 24/7 when you leave your house..

The processor/graphics card manufacturer is required to state how much power the device draws from the PSU to associated slots or sockets... For the newest cards, this is pretty much exactly what Nadril said, 650W (for the cards like Radeon 4870). Your system wont be able to run such a graphics card if you have a weaker power supply. That being said, I somewhat disagree it's a waste of money to buy, say, a 1000W power supply... Because they are often more efficient (up to 85% of electricity gets used, in contrast to 40-70% on typical 300-500W stock ones) and you will have room for upgrading other component, without having to worry if you have enough power. The price difference between a 650W and 1000W isn't that great at all.

Dodgeball was probably the most popular ball game besides soccer in my old school. Like in grade 1 or 2 we even played it with teachers & parents on a special occassion, when everyone had to go to school on Saturday & bring their parents if possible... Don't mean to be prejudiced, but I'll bet money this happened either in the UK or the US... Neither one has a shortage of delusional adults out of touch with reality, or obsessed with 'security'...

If it's really urgent (talking about hours/1 day), rather than trying to quickly fix a problem that could have multiple causes, in your position I'd take the above advice & go and buy a small USB drive, maybe 1GB. They're constantly on sale for $3-$5 dollars. Alternatively, upload it to any of the thousands of instant no-registration file sharing sites like http://www.2shared.com, take down the address & download it at school (or if you wrote it in school, download it at home later)

Pros of laptop: [*:3cujlhbn] Portability. Adequate for general work purposes Cons of laptop: [*:3cujlhbn]Runs at high temperatures. [*:3cujlhbn]Unfit for any sort of proper gaming, unless you have an AlienWare rig don't even attempt playing newer games like GTA4, Crysis etc [*:3cujlhbn]Inadequate support for anything that requires graphic processing power. [*:3cujlhbn]You can't install a lot of regular hardware components. Pros of desktop: [*:3cujlhbn]Everything. You can install a proper amount of RAM cheaply, buy proper graphics cards, and practically do anything computers are meant to do, both leisure & work. Cons of desktop: [*:3cujlhbn]Nothing, performance wise. You just can't carry it around or use it in a plane, train, etc. I currently have a laptop, by the way. Desktop's heatsink fan broke months ago, can't really be bothered to buy a new one right now just to play some games.

After Christianity: what will be the next big "Religion"?
BlueLancer replied to Eregion2's topic in Off-Topic
It's unknown for everyone, and that's not going to change any time soon. Even if it causes problems it's best not to insult other people. Doesn't really matter if you're a christian, muslim, atheist, hindu or whatever; Of the total 6.5 billion people on this planet, religious adherence between christianity, islam, hinduism, (and atheism which isn't a religion) is roughly 20-25% each, with significant buddhist, taoist and naturalist religious people, and 15 million jews. That means regardless of your religious stance, 70-75% of the world don't agree with you nor have anything to do with your religion or lack of it. Take those people's beliefs into consideration before condemning or ridiculing them, they can think you're just as equally "wrong". -

His source is http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nation ... 2222.story By the way, the US senate just rejected the bailout last Friday so it's not going to become reality & the House vote didn't count for much.

Besides the 15 or so translations I PM'ed, I can help out more later  Gotta sleep now though..

I'd definitely pay good bucks to have a chance to talk to all the old friends & players I first met 2001-2004. I also know some of them real life & haven't been able to catch up because everyone has pretty much grown up or doesn't even spend time on games anymore. I don't think it's sad or geeky at all. RS was a pretty unique game back when it was released, even if it's nothing special now. Besides Helbreath and Diablo, there weren't really that many quality online RPG's with a reasonable amount of players to have fun in

No, it's not. Agreed, especially in traditionalist and conservative societies, marriage often has absolutely nothing to do with love. The partners can even loathe each other, but either family is forced to go through because of economic pressure or arrangements agreed upon over a decade ago, etc. More accurately it would be two people basically "sharing" life, across all cultures, regardless of them loving each other or not. In a lot of non-arranged marriages though, especially in western countries, the major motive is love between two people instead of any other reason. Other reasons can include legally being able to adopt a child, recieving certain benefits in society, etc.

Archive.org has extensive records on scapeboard, but a lot of the links are broken due to phpBB coding that adds a huge hash like f9637a97f155bcf1ab0b70179bbb9738 at the end of a lot of URL's. Since the scapeboard domain went down & host refused to return us any databases, that's all there is to it really. Archive.org is your only shot at trying to find a pre-2004 topic

After Christianity: what will be the next big "Religion"?

Really? Explain... Because it claims to be a think-for-yourself-philosophy instead of "owing your allegiance to a deity". Still in my eyes, I'd consider any philosophical rulebook you go by as your religion. It's like saying that white isn't a color. I don't think just taking "God" out of the equation should mean that it isn't religion - but that instead it just isn't worship. Yeah, I wouldn't say Buddhism is a religion at all. Buddha didn't say "You will all worship me as a powerful deity or I will smite you!" when he died. Religion as a concept has nothing to do with worshipping a particular 'god' or not doing so. Religion can include a multitude of philosophical and supernatural beliefs of afterlife, it's not tied to just one aspect which is worship. Besides, Buddha is not considered a deity or god in buddhism. He is revered as a guru who gained ultimate enlightment, and people try to emulate him. In the Buddhist belief system, 'ignorance' or Avidya created the world. Through the practice of prajna (meditation, helping other people, abstaining of violence) they try to get rid of ignorance. -
If you want to drink tasty stuff even if it includes alcohol, I suggest small portions and bottles of premium quality spirits. They cost too much for you to be able to over-indulge, & taste great when mixed with other drinks. I occassionally buy premium caribbean rum, maybe once a year, in one or two 200ml bottles. If you know how to mix it properly or sparingly drink it 'raw', it will still last a while & you'll have some left to share to friends.. Not everything has to be drinked in one go. You can drink a product over weeks, months, even years (in the case of expensive cognacs etc.)

Both animals are ok. In a lot of poor countries only dogs are considered as domestic animals; People don't keep cats because of the small utility value. Dogs on the other hand can be used for almost anything including physical labour, hunting aid etc. In western countries and in larger houses though, cats too can be both entertaining and useful: They catch rats and lizards very effectively, keeping vermin out of the sight. As a strictly personal opinion, I've always percieved cats to be more passive-aggressive compared to dogs. If a cat just wants to be alone and you kindly scratch it's back, it may just suddenly lash at you after 10 seconds & no warning, or even attack. Dogs can do that too but from personal experience, less so..

That looping music is maddening, but the easter eggs and minor details are pretty funny, like when you complete a level  You can clearly see it wasn't made by some immature 14-year old

The world has about 15 million jews out of a total world population of 6.5 billion people. It's near 0,20% -
