  1. i don't know too many headphones that logitech makes. i assume you're not a audiophile and thus you're not a stickler for super sound quality, so i'd go for sony h.earphones for comfort and sound quality (its not super, but its above average). plus, they're cheap. you'll probably have to switch them up every 6 months or so, thats what i have to do

    Stars

I love just looking at the stars, its really relaxing though, even in the suburbs i live in, the light pollution is astonishing. the meteor shower last summer i could only see a small patch of sky
  3. Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder in which the sufferer goes goes between normal, and the two poles - manic and depressive. Likely, the kid was in his depressive state. When they are normal, they do not know when they will shift to a pole. When depressive hits, the sufferer is fully conscious of the change; usually they know it changes, but, like with depression, they may not even think it worth it to take medication. They usually feel that way about medication because, to quote my friend, "it makes [her] feel like a zombie". Could you imagine living your life like that? Its likely he had not taken medication during this episode. Nope. Yes it is. Severity of mental disorders and suicides, and even suicide alone, is socially constructed. Is it a coincidence that the attempted suicide rate is 1:4, female to male, while the completed suicide rate is 4:1, male to female? Everybody is in on this, just like any other social and community issue. I think you should read my post again. If someone wants to kill themselves, they will succeed. The people who want help take a handful of aspirin and a sleeping pill. They won't die because they don't want to. They want help and that's their way of reaching out. And judging by what you said here, I think it's you who's the "smug smartass." This kid was already over the edge; there was nothing any of the users could have said to stop him. Also, it's not "everyone's problem," especially not those who watched. There was really no way they could help. If they called 911, there was probably little to no viable information they could provide. Your argument isn't consistent. What kind of suicide, then, is this? The issue you focus on, though, is more about responsibility than the suicide itself though. You think its nobody's fault, because whats the chance that someone trying to help would be able to help? You make it seem like no one could do anything. But the police eventually got there, which means one person got through. What if more people had taken initiative and called, and/or they called earlier? Maybe, then, they would have gotten through earlier and faster. Its that mentality of "I'm just one person, i won't make a difference", that lack of a sense of significance and responsibility, that prevented his help. It was everybody's responsibility. Heres Gandhi's paradox: Nothing we do as individuals matters, but it is essentially vital that we do it anyways. No, he made it everybody's problem. Really? How did i misinterpret? Or, what if, maybe, just maybe, I interpreted certain people's reactions to suicide and depression as ignorance regarding the matters? Because maybe you (in general, not just you, though you can take it that way if you really want to be defensive), to put it bluntly, don't know what you're talking about. That, and you're convinced that you do. I already explained how it was more than just a cry for attention. But feel free to ignore me and continue your ignorant, happy life. And, No, it was everybody's problem, but they chose to ignore it. Once it stared them in the face, they (tried to) shift responsibility to everyone else. Like you are, saying its nobody's fault but his. I suggest you really understand the issue before you jump to such rash labels as "stupid". If you saw a kid threatening to kill himself on live webcam and he had some pills in his hand, would you believe him to be serious? There are better ways to get attention and help than the internet and you know it. Kid's fault imo. Should know better than to ask for help from people he doesnt know personally and irl. First of all, yes, i would believe him, and i would call 911. Second, it was for more than just attention, it was a cry for help. I hope you understand that first before you draw conclusions. Again, its a cry for help (not just attention). Where does this "thirst for attention" come from? Its scary to see how you're so quick to put blame on him, and even take away the gravity of his depression. So... if he wasn't being serious, and this was only a cry for help, you should just turn away and forget about it? I'd help him anyway. The guy's clearly in trouble. Whether he's serious about killing himself is neither here nor there. It just adds to the gravity of the situation. What was anyone to do? Whether they were sad losers or generally concerned people, the most they could do would be to call the police and tell them some kid over the internet looks like he's dead. Fat load of good that would do. Once again, better than nothing, huh?
  4. this forum makes me sick sometimes For attention... which is almost worthless when you are dead. almost worthless? How about completely worthless. For attention... which is almost worthless when you are dead. i bet you all feel proud of yourselves right now. who the hell are you to judge the kid's actions? do you think you know what you're talking about, you smug smartasses? the kid was bipolar. there are only two treatments: drugs for his depressive states, and community support. those who truely want to die will die and it is incredibly difficult to stop them. these people either complete suicide, or attempt suicide and fail, get put in an institution, then complete suicide once they get out. the mere fact that he broadcasted the event meant he wanted someone to try to stop him; his attempting suicide would give him the answer to whether or not anyone valued his life more than he did. the bodybuilding site was his community and he got his answer. completing suicide is an issue created by society, whether you think so or not. its everybody's problem, the people who watched and even the people who saw it and stopped watching.
  5. the three options you listed all fall under the category, "mp3 player" Suggestions depend on your budget. If you can go all out, an iPod is a nice looking option. If not, i'd check out anythingbutipod.com regardless, if its going to be 4gb or less, go for a flashbased player. smaller and handier. personally, I'd suggest a samsung yp-t10, a zune 4 or 8, or a sansa e200 series with rockbox.
  6. This is usually the fastest way, though its not profitable to attach strings on anything but yew longs
  7. while we're on this topic, I just installed ubuntu and i'm trying to install java, with no success. I've looked up a ton of things, but whenever i type a command, nothing happens. The past hour has been spent looking up how to install java, but its been a waste. To run a command, i just type while in the folder, and a little box appears, right? This has been frustrating me to no end...
  8. it scares me how many people don't know the difference between racist and prejudiced and no, it isn't racism, nor is it prejudiced. You have preferences, its just that a stigma is put on race so talk of preference is generally negative.
  9. I was a little excited when i first heard about it, but then i saw the camera. I was really, really disappointed. I have a DS lite and it seems like the changes are really just insignificant gimmicks. Who would use it as a camera? I'm just glad its not replacing the DS lite. Their games will be great, i'm sure, but i don't tihnk it'll swing too well in the US btw, ppl saying that it'll b able to flashcart - are there any details on how games are run on sd's? Maybe it won't be as easy as using a flashcart
  10. During high school, days I would stay after school i'd buy a soda from the teacher's lounge for $.65 and keep the change. That started around jr year, and i'd put those coins in one drawer of my desk. Occasionally i'd use some of that change for other things, but it built up. I had about $30 worth of coins from just that vending machine I use those quarters now for my laundry (in college, hehe)
  11. have you ever smoked before? nicotine is a stimulant and calms nerves - if you ever have an anxiety attack, a cigarette will reduce or stop it Your reason as to why people feel relaxed is false. However, people may become stressed when deprived of nicotine, so, if the user is addicted, the act of smoking would reduce the stress, in addition to the relaxing properties of nicotine
  12. 1) Oatmeal CHOCOLATE CHIP cookies. does anyone make these? 2) Oreos 3) Otis spunkmeyer cookies. only tasty if they come with the sticker, so you can stick them on people (termed spunking at my school...)
  13. When I'm cleaning out my folders at the end of the year, my trash papers are made into paper planes and/or recycled. the best looking designs are usually the crappiest ones, too hehe
  14. they missed an important one waking up with morning wood does not mean we were thinking dirty thoughts :^o
  15. Roflmao. My HS's mascot was cougars. green and yellow, i think? all the sports teams that required a mascot sucked.
  16. Nicotine is an antidepressant/antianxiety. Whenever i'm really stressed or get feelings of anxiety, i'd usually just wait it off to calm myself down. But if something big happened, or something big is going to happen, i'd feel like [cabbage] for really long starting the end of summer i started smoking whenever I got that feeling. One through and it'd take it away. I've only needed minus one time, where i was stressed out over something for about 12 hours and I had four. Since i've started, ive only had eight or nine cigarettes total, i've never finished a pack The point i'm trying to make is not to smoke, but to limit yourself if you know you can. Like any other drug, your body builds resistance. If you smoke often, it won't be /as effective, and the urges to smoke will only add to stress. I can limit myself. If you can't, then i would high suggest not smoking, as it will only make things worse.
  17. in elementary school, i loved pokemon i started magic end of middle school year but stopped before jr year. I'd play at tourneys (official and unofficial) and sell the winnings. When affinity broke t2 i just played limited and sold those winnings. good times...
  18. well... i managed to get the administrator account up... still can't open the folder. Dam this isfrustrating /problem solved, yet not
  19. Theres a folder I have to open under "program files" but it does not let me. I've been doing a helluva lot of googling, and it seems like to get the rights i need to: Once i get to the step that says "Now open local uses and groups", there is no such option under system tools and I can't for the love of god find out why. Can anyone help me?
  20. Same thing they do every night (And day), Pinky. Propogating the species. via fecal transmission? :o wait, dude... are you serious? do you know anything about reproduction in non-mammals?
  21. ~Deleted. -meol Anyways, i like ipods. They get the job done and rarely have problems. It gives everything on anythingbutipod.com a run for its money. the only downfall, of course, is itunes. Either way, I have a samsung yp-p2, which is really nice

    Gravity

Everything attracts each other with a force. Between our normal sized objects, the force is extremely minimal. Gravity is due to the force between us and the earth, which, obviously, is very heavy that force, F, is equated with F = Gm1m2/r^2, m1 being the mass of the first object, and m2 being of the second. F = ma, and since the acceleration in question is the acceleration of us (9.8m/s/s), it would be m1a=Gm1m2/r^2, so.... a = Gm/r^2, a being 9/8m/s/s, G being a constant, m being the mass of the earth, and r being the radius of the earth. Take physics in high school and they'll go over this. its, i guess, unknown why things attract each other. but, the equation above can be applied to any two objects (including other planets and each other, hence why we rotate around the earth)
  23. furthering your argument would be "Hm, I'm starving and homeless, but i get food that just got donated, I'll eat up resources and die a week later instead"
  24. be careful there, using analogies in science is very dangerous, and the birth of a child analogy is not evolution, it is simply following genetic code then dying off. They're just chemical properties. You make it sound so difficult and special, but seriously, a creature that can produce an acid is nothing special. A creature that can produce something that does not react with acid is nothing special, either. you put up some mythical facade over acid as if its some biologically impossible thing, but its not. The best part about your argument is that production of specific substances that react in certain ways is chemistry, not biology. The aiming is instinct, we can do it too. Look, I'm doing it right now, typing without looking at my keyboard! But, alas, thats in the psychology and physics department, not the bio department. Shooting in bursts? Its almost as if they had control over themselves! Too bad we can't do that. Oh wait, yes we can... we have muscles! And bones, and tendons, and the capacity to use them. Hell, we can even shoot things out of our [wagon]! We can even control the speed of the projectile and the intervals it can come out! NO WAY, ARE WE THE BUG YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT? It seems like the only way to satisfy you is to show a creature that is so evolutionally unsophisticated that every function it has is inefficient. I'd say there would be no such thing, because such a thing would never survive any change in environment. But then i'd also say you could look at the bottom of the deepest of seas, where you can find fish that haven't been anywhere close to sunlight and a change in environment for millions of years, but you wouldnt listen anyways, since you're too afraid to take even a biology course. Oh, and heres the bug, so you can tout this to other people who believe in evolution: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/422599.stm
