Starter packs are the way to go if you're jumping in with no previous guitar experience and just want something to get you started. If you stick with it, you'll be wanting to upgrade both your guitar and amp though after a while though. Have you considered buying a second hand guitar? There are some real bargains out there on Ebay and in guitar shops.

As I'm exploring the more extreme forms of metal, I'm finding that a) I can't understand the lyrics, and B) I wouldn't want to understand them anyway. The music is pretty good though.

Dream Theater - The Glass Prison

Yep, I'd have to say that would be my favourite also. Thirded. The entire game looked so real and still does for some reason, even if the graphics are a bit outdated. It had an atmosphere that not many other games can rival. Those Daedric ruins and armours just looked awesome. Glass and Ebony were beautiful as well.
