I think the reason "lol" is overused because there is nothing to symbolize a chuckle. If someone said something remotely funny, I say "lol". Haha and hehe are basically the same thing. Its denotation is that you are laughing out loud; but really, you are just representing some sort of amusement.

offtopic...I would, personally say, never hit a woman because they're a woman. Exactly the same moral code should apply for men.
