garrett1415
Hello Everyone! Well, Jagex has mentioned that Runescape is educational. I'll add this quote from the "Parents Guide" RuneScape aims to provide an entertaining and fulfilling online gaming experience, one that people of all ages can enjoy. Moreover, we try to educate our players in ways that will help them develop essential skills that they could use in their everyday life. A three-year study conducted by Dr Simon Bradford and Nic Crowe at Brunel University, found that our efforts are having a positive impact ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬ÅWe noticed how they divided their time between work and play ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ an activity that is largely managed for schoolchildren and is often first learned with the independence of university education̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâà
ianer101
Yes, I think that Runescape can be educational, it definitely promotes diligence in achieving your goals. "If you have nothing constructive to say, don't say anything at all."
unkn0wnwarrior
Parts of Runescape are educational, yes. They provide many opportunities to improve your mind through quests and what-not.

highlanders
Educational, in terms of content, no. But if your main language is not english, you learn lots of words. I'm french, and I learned a lot of words in my years of Rs. If your main language is english, then u wont learn anything, or hardly. 2480+ total

Are u accusing me of having bad english now? That's what you insinuated. Come over here so that I can smack u. No one learns anything about how people talks, I was talking about quests/npcs, the words they use, or the name of objects. 2480+ total

For me, I don't learn English from RS, but I DO practice English in RS. And practice makes perfect, so in that way I learn English in RS. (I'm Dutch BTW. ;) ) But ontopic: To be honest, RS being educational is just a big bunch of crap. It's only promoting RS to parents, so more kids will play and subcripe. Fairly logical from Jagex opinion by the way. Retired.

King_Peter18
Runescape isn't ecucational it all, it is certain people who play it that are educational resources. Anyone who says otherwise, is selling something.
Striker6
Moreover, we try to educate our players in ways that will help them develop essential skills that they could use in their everyday life. Unlikely, you could click your way to 99 in a skill that perhaps you would think would benefit you in real life. Maybe you want to be a farmer when you're older but I guarantee even if you maxed out farming you would still know absolutely nothing about the skill that is farming. Runescape is not educational, if parents wanted there child to be educated they could introduce them to a book.

qeltar
The entire Parents' Guide is nothing more than a fluff piece -- a marketing brochure to make parents feel at ease when 8-year-old Johnny brings home a Scholastic book club flyer with an ad in it for the Runescape Official Handbook and starts playing the game at his local library. For example, the Parents Guide claims that Jagex maintains an active presence in the game, when they don't; it claims the game is for "all ages"; it says NOTHING about the Wilderness; and it says Jagex offers speedy customer service. Yes, Runescape does have some positive educational aspects. It is also a great place for kids to learn how to treat others like dirt, cheat, lie, scam, develop dysfunctional relationships, get addicted, and much more. I cover these issues and more in great detail at my site; see below. ~q Qeltar, aka Charles KozierokWebmaster, RuneScoop - Premium RuneScape Information for Expert Players -- Now Free!Featuring the Ultimate Guide to Dungeoneering -- everything you need to know to get the most of the new skill! Latinoking
R.U.N.E.S.C.A.P.E = My Anti-Drug 8-) Yeah what you really learn in Runescape is that #1 Overall Player pwnts all. There is a lot of people who are sweatshop workers so they marco and then sell those raw materials to sell cash on sites. That the MAN (Jagex) will always keep you down in expressing your feelings and have mods lock you out or mute you. That if your guibble(sp?) people will scam your or lure you. That you must work hard for something (99 skills). That you will always play this game and sometimes not do homework to play. That you will miss out times with your friends to go raise a level you wanted or do that new quest. I'll think of more later............ I cover these issues and more in great detail at my site; see below. ~q Runescape isn't responsible for that. The people that play it are. Yes, some things in the parents guide is bogus, how ever. Do you expect Jagex to control every little thing players say? Thats imposing freedom of speech. People do what ever they can get away with on online games. The game itself is rated 13+. The game is rated, not the people. The content Jagex adds to the game is what the game is rated on. The people aren't rated. To say Runescape itself teaches players how to treat people by the ways you listed, is a completely bias opinion. The people are responsible for that, not Jagex. If the library deems it appropriate by their experiance, then so be it. If you bring the information to them, and they still deem it approrpriate, so be it. What does the wilderness have anything to do with the game being for all ages? They don't say the game is for all ages when they clearly state that it is for 13+. As for the addiction part, that is the responsability of the parent. Nothing more. Saying that RuneScape is good for teaching you English is like saying that GTA is good for teaching you how to be a businessman. Again, the players help with that. Not Runescape itself. Grand Theft Auto was designed that way, Runescape was not.

I'm french alright. I know if Rs can teach u english or not. I did learn from reading all the quest text, all the npc talk, all the name of the objects in-game. I know this, I've experienced it, you haven't. I learned a ton of words; spade, post, hill, etc. Words that I would have not learned otherwise. I also have learned a lot about sentence coherence, punctuation, etc. Ever since I started playing Runescape 5 yrs ago, my English grades have skyrocked, my mother saw the difference right away. So don't come here acting as if you know everything, because on this, you have absolutely no word to say. 2480+ total

I taught myself English by playing computer games and browsing forums, and I don't speek in leet. On the subject: It's a computer game with as main goal killing monsters or mining iron in the most unrealistic way possible. Of course it's not educational. I did learn some new words but that has nothign to do with the game. Retired 2146 overall - 136 combat - 6 skillcapes Plus I think the whole teenage girl thing will end soon (hopefully), because my girlfriend is absolutely in love with him(she is 18), and im beginning to feel threatened by his [Justin Bieber] dashing looks. darkforaster
I, myself, do not find runescape educational. Maybe that is because i am english, as many otehrs have said that the game can teach you good english. But I'm unsure that the majority of the runescape players (english speakers) won't learn anything. RS is a basic game. Only used to learn language. Lumbridge and it's past.
