More Of An Impact Than First Thought

Featured Replies

Think about it, everybody has been ranting about how the wilderness ditch slows runecrafting. I agree, but its impact may be felt in more than just runecrafting. I bought a santa 2 weeks ago for 21 million gp. Now they are 19.5 million. So how over 2 weeks did I lose 1.5 mil? I put some thought into it, and the answer is, the Wilderness Ditch.

How does most money come into runescape most commonly? The answer is of course, high alchemy. For that, you need yew longs, and nature runes. People recently think the Ditch slowed abyss runecrafting, so they stopped it. This resulted into a fewer number of runecrafters, and therefore, nature runes. With less nature runes, less high alchemy can be preformed. With less high alchemy, less gold comes into the economy. How is this bad? What happens when something gets rarer? Its price goes up. With less gp, its rarer, so worth more. This would make all items worth less gold because the gold itself is becoming rarer. Since gp is worth more, and prices are driven down, it effects rares greatly.

Overall, my theory is that with the Ditch, there are less runecrafters to supply nats for alchers, making less gp each day, making gp rarer. This drives prcies down, explaining the 1.5 million loss in price of a santa hat. So even little things like that ditch, can result in multi million losses for players like me, or even bigger if they own multiple santas. For a level 91 like me, that 1.5 million gp is hard to get. It might take me a few days at barrows, or a lot of boring skilling. Overall, the Wilderness Ditch is causing trouble in prices, and mid-high level player's banks. Unless the Ditch is removed, I fear that santas will continue to drop and we will lose more than that simple 1 or 2 mil from before. :ohnoes:

interesting, but I dont see how a ditch can cause a price drop. The prices of santas ALWAYS drop as xmas time leaves, including in the spring and summer.

maybe i should have done some mroe research to save myself a few mil....

if the price keeps dropping then its the cause of nature runes but i dont think enough people quit rc to make a big difference.

Also keep it for a year until Christmas then it will be a good price for them.

I wasn't merching it, i wanted it as a status symbol, showing off, and just something to gain value over time(long term merching basically)

Your reasoning could be correct ... HOWEVER, the ditch is about 4 days old now? I doubt it could of had made an impact on alchers yet.

So IMO you can't blame it on that simply because it's to short after it's release.

8-) O if its a long term thing than it will FOR SURE reach over what you bought it for by Christmas O:)

Santa hats are like baseball cards. There is always some idiot willing to pay big money for something with no intrinsic value (piece of paper and ink or pixels in case of santa). If I am going to spend my money on something expensive it better serve a function in the game like 3rd age armour. They should have left Santa hats to those that played when they came out as a status symbol for stickin with the game so long not new players stupid enough to waste their hard earned money on a functionless piece of equipment.

Ha, wow, seems like someone either had a bad experience with Santa hats or needs to take a chill pill.

But I don't think the wilderness ditch is as big an influence as you think. Rares always fluxuate, and right now they're on a pretty big downward spiral. Before the wilderness ditch came out. Just wait a bit bro. If you have extra cash anyway, no worries.

If it's so functionless then why does your avatar have a dude wearing a santa in it? :-#

Santas fluctuate all the time. I doubt this was caused by a massive reduction of natures, otherwise the whole economy would be hit across the board. You're connecting two unrelated dots.

I'm currently saving up for a santa, not for bragging, but as a nest egg for the future.

But srsly. I think that santas aren't rising because of threads like this. No one wants to pay more for a santa because the people who own them keep whining about how they are dropping and how they are going to drop even more.

But I don't think the ditch would drain it at all. My bet is still on skill capes and pure essence. People love aiming for a skill cape instead of a rare. With pure essence costing 90gp per I don't see why people runecraft in the first place. You never know the price of rares. If we did we would all be buying and selling them. Stuff happens.. you need to move on and not blame your mistakes on in game updates. An extra 5 seconds a trip doesn't hurt Runecraft.

Quit RuneScape :)

Everyone says that santas raise in price during winter, but it is not true. It used to be that way, but during Christmas of 2006 there were so many people who thought that santas would rise that the price ended up falling significantly, although that might have been partly due to the after affects of construction and other recent money drains.

Rare priced fluctuate all the time. They are only guaranteed to go up in the long run. If you are looking for a quick way to make 10 mil, don't invest in rares.

Try: Merchenters, and a less demand for Santa hats. Especially the less demand.

Nowhere NEAR enough runecrafters "quit" runecrafting because of an extra 1-2 second object in the way. Because they STILL make a lot of money from crafting the nature runes.

Don't jump to conclusions. This is economics. The price drop is either because of:

A) A less demand of santa hats, so people want to sell them but there isn't people buying for the higher price because there's a lower demand. or:

B) Some merchenters or more people are trying to sell them, so then there's more supply than the above demand. These both correspond btw.

Sadly you didn't put enough thought into it... If sufficient people stopped runecrafting the result would be a lesser supply of Nats, which would result in the price of nats going up (it hasn't). Nats are currently 300-310ea the elasticity of demand for nats has been proven to be relatively inelastic within this range. In other words, people will continue to buy nats in great bulk for a price greater than 310ea (usually up to ~330ea). Above this figure demand starts to wane slightly, so until such times as nats are >330ea you can rest assured that the army of high alchers are still bringing plenty of inflationary gp into the game.

Leaving aside the cyclical nature of the rares market, what you should be looking at is where people are spending their money if not on rares. Arguably this could be raw materials, although looking at a selection of raw materials indicates that if anything prices are on a downward rather than upward trend which would in turn suggest that this is not the case. Alternatively it might suggest that so many people have turned to collecting raw materials that supply in those markets is greater than demand.

Another economic factor that would see prices drop across most items, and in particular luxury goods (such as rares in the rs economy) would be uncertainty or anticipated change. This would usually result in consumers saving money rather than spending it in preparation for dealing with change/disaster etc. In runescape terms this might mean a large update (though personally, I doubt that bracelets have had this sort of impact).

EDIT: PS I'm still crafting nats, as are most of the regular people that I usually craft with and/or see crafting on my home world.

kinda true, but i <3 the dith for some unknown reason lol, people can high alch much more happy now since no lurers :P . anyways, i make my own nats from now on so tada! my problem is solved

The ditch doesn't slow rcing. All you need to do is click.

I'm sick of people saying the ditch nerfed the abyss. FFS you have it easy with the abyss. Why don't you make them with the shop method, THEN the abyss. It is still fast.
