Why is quitting Runescape so difficult?

When people say "Alright, rs is taking over, I'm going to quit NOW!" they usually do that. They can go a few months. But they do eventually come back like you mentioned because they didn't really bore themselves of the game. They just went cold-turkey, if you will. If you just force yourself off the game like that, you'll still have an interest in it, and you'll eventually come back because that interest won't be quenched.

It's not until you've played enough of it and just become bored of it when you log on, slowly log on less and less, until you've just lost interest entirely of it. When people say they quit, they don't mean they've stopped playing the game. They mean they've taken their own intervention from a bad addiction, which they'll most likely go back into sooner or later.

There's no such thing as 'quitting' runescape - it's not a job or anything. It's something that you gradually lose interest in until you've realized you've basically stopped entirely.

You will probably quit when you find it extremely boring and when you don't have time to sit about playing games all day. Also when you realise there is so much better things to waste your time on :)

Don't think I've properly played in about 2 years.

If you'll notice, these two guys above have been playing the game for years and years. I too have played Runescape for a great long time and yet now that I'm in a university setting I just haven't played. I probably played for about four years straight, all of high school really.

As Phil said I just don't have time for Runescape anymore as there's SO much else to do (Such as work, developing marketable skills, schooling, etc.) I'd say for all of this past Spring Semester I haven't played a minute of Runescape. Just because I've got so much more things to do. But even before that I was beginning to phase out more and more as Adam said. Every time I logged off it was a longer time in between logging back on than the last time.

Here's what I've got to say on quitting. Play the game for as long as you like middle school through high school, fine and dandy but if you're still playing the game the same number of hours with the same "Man I wish I were on RS right now" mentality midway through college then you truly need to reevaluate your situation. Playing once or twice for an hour a week isn't bad at all but pulling all nighters just to beat some quests isn't worth it at all during higher education. So play as much as you want to play now as middle school and high school are going to be very poor years of life (your body's changing, clique's being formed, schema's developing) but when higher education hits you'll phase out and be fine.

+1 one of my friends is in his 3rd year of college now, he says the homework is so brutal that he only has time for 2 hours of rs a week. except for that party he had... he got his construction up and pulled an all nighter, but i had to go at like 9:30 p.m, he told m,,e a couple of days later that it went to 2:00 and he dropped full dragon. i told him i hated him. then he says he has to quit rs cause he never has time. i told him i loved him 8-)

I've been playing Runescape for around 5 years also. I recently quit for like 6 months but now I am playing again. I made a new account and I am already 87 strength 80 attack 63 defense, etc.. it's sad, very sad.

I just spend a lot of my free time listening to music.... But I've lost interest and don't believe I'll ever regain it...ever. (In the game)

Just find some pretty good tunes and never go to http://www.runescape.com and maybe never go to any fan sites if it's that bothersome for you.

Green Day

Linkin Park

etc

Good music. Besides don't you believe you are too good to be spending hours upon hours on a game? Don't you have pride?

Would you rather be listening to punk rock or whatever than being on a game with bad graphics and plot and annoying little prats that annoy you?

Why it's hard to quit.

Many teenagers are baffled nowadays by the mere question?

Do I quit Runescape?

is it really that hard?

the answer is, Yes.

Why?

well the answer is simple-its runescape, they always come up with new sh1t in the game so everytime you wanna quit they make something that you want to try out, and while you're trying this "thing" out, something else comes out. So you say, i'll try that next week when im done with this-then the cycle repeats...

That bolded word says it all, sorry.

If you are addicted to this game, walk away. It's not worth it. Those (that are happy in real life) are better than you. Are you gonna let them be better and reign over you? Aren't you going to do something about it and make yourself successful?

I've had addictions and I've changed. I can't tell you them, sorry. However, I can tell you that it can be done (to walk away). My life was completely turned around and the old self has died. The addictions have also died with it. If I can walk away from something nlike that and never come back, I know you can too.

I think its hard because you dont want to leave the character you've been working on for so long. Thats why I have a hard time quitting.

i agree, and you wouldnt abandon one of your favorite games that you grew up with.

Runescape is like a smoking is addictive, but instead of being a physical addictive its a mental addictive, sense you like runescape and it makes you happy when you play your body wants to play it. Thus making you addicted to it.

If you know some one who smokes you probley know they tryed to quit a few times but they come back, if its one day to even a few months they still come back, same with runescape even though people quit it still brings them back. There is the few people that quit smoking and them are like the few people that quit runescape, because theres a big reason to do so. Maybe loose your wife so you need to quit or going to stay back in school so you need to quit runescape.

Right; its the only way too quit:

Runescape-itine patches. Stick em on ur arm once a day to settle ur craving for runescape =D>

Muuuuuuuust respond. How is listening to music more worthy than playing a game? Thats literally the stupidest thing anyones ever said. For one music is not interactive, sure you can listen and do a jig or sing but you are not influencing the music, with a game, what you do matters.

I'm seriously gobsmacked by this and hope its some sort of post-modernist humour. If you say you dont liek the game for whatever reason fine thats cool, but saying listening to music is something to be more PROUD of than playing a game is insanity. Maybe you don't know what pride is, im not sure. I don't care if you listen to whatever music rather than playing a game but saying one is a waste of time and the other isn't is rtarded.

Well, I stopped playing for 18 months, but I wouldn't call it quitting. The halls I was staying in blocked the ports RS uses, and I had no idea how to make it work again. I soon found other things to occupy my time.

I didn't pick RS back up again until last November, when on a whim I thought I'd log back on and see what changed... except I couldn't actually see what had changed as it was a free account and I couldn't even remove anything form my bank. I got members pretty quickly after that.

My main problem is that RS doesn't occupy my free time, it takes up the time I should spend working and revising... My social life is just as busy as it always was.

Goals to get my skills back up to a barely respectable level on the high scores:

Never heard of someone committing suicide because they couldn't quit music. At least music can tell you about the [cabbage] that everyone faces in life and how to deal with it, unlike a game.

So you'd rather be playing a game 24/7 or whatever and gain lots of weight? At least you can listen to your iPod and jog at the same time.

Quitting Runescape was difficult for me just because I am a competitive person playing within such a competitive game. This game is filled with so many items and goals that individuals can acheive, theres always something to desire.

It honestly took me a few good months of slowly cutting down on my playing hours until I finally got over the addiction to keep playing it. I get on occasionally here and there to chat with friends, but my desire to train as I used to is completely gone.

It's basically an endless game. Usually after I complete a game to the standard I want (not always 100%, in fact hardly ever :P), it's not long til I stop playing it.

If you get to a stage where you feel you need to quit, then it's more likely you'll come back as you enjoy the game. Like Adam said, if you stop playing cold-turkey, then you haven't got all you wanted from the game. If you gradually pull away from it due to lack of interest, then the game for you has run it's course and you move on to the next.

As I said earlier about me not usually playing games to 100% but to my personal standard, I do have one for Runescape and while it changes fairly frequently, it does not include maxed total level. For example, I do not see the fun or achievment for myself of getting Herblore past 82 or Agility past 85.

Wow this is quite an active topic! :D

I guess what made me come back the first time was that RS2 had come out and I wanted to see the new game engine.

The second time I was just plain curious to see what had changed and just general boredom, caught the addiction again :XD:

I have been playing RS for almost 5 years now, and in that time I have 'quit' Runescape twice, the first lasting 10 months, the second lasting 6 months.

Many other people seem to have this problem, they quit Runescape and within a few months there back playing again. I have even noticed a few posts on 'X is leaving Runescape' topics where people have posted 'No-one quits Runescape, they all come back eventually'.

Which got me wondering, what makes Runescape so difficult to actually never play again?

I have quit RuneScape, and today because I got bored of WoW I decided to come here and take a look at this thread...

I've quit RS many times.... The longest time I've ever stayed away from RS is about 3 months !

The reason I quit RS is usually to play another game, and when I get bored of that game I'll feel like playing RS again.

Well, I don't think I'll ever come back to RuneScape again to be honest... I'll logon when the new Varock is here !

WoW also seems like a better community to be in than RS... You don't get as many scammers etc etc... Also, I've hit the maximum level on WoW ..and that bought a whole new different play style to me (Raiding etc...)

Onto the reason why people find it so hard to quit RS ---- They are addicted !

I've being addicted to RS many times. :)

i find it hard to quit caz of all the friends ive made and skills ive set, but i sometimes i wont to quit because i cant seem to make money (comon guys lv 91 with only a whip?) and my total is low, but i always make a turn around, i did quit for a year before when i lost my red phat, if i still had it, i wouldnt be in the slumps i am now, but just like ife, its has the ups, downs and determination. and no matter who you are, you control your destiny (unless your in prison) and in 5 years also playing, im not stopping till my goal is done, and thats to be reconised for something in ruenscape, weather it be a 99 skill or sumthing, also till that red party hat is sitting on my head once more...when i find a way to make such a rediculis amount.... <.<.

another thing that gets me oging, is seeing ppl 100+ combat for just playing 2 years +, i've alwasy died, lost so much money and cant use rs forums caz of a hacker, and i swear on my oath as a RSC player i will beat them and make it to 100+ someday...when i get a better weapon that a stupid whip!

1)anyone who commits suicide because they can't quit a game is so stupid they would have died anyway (probably painfully), if someone actually has commited suicide because they couldnt quit this game i have no sympathy.

2)if you think music can teach you about life you are deluded. Music, like the stuff you listed ('linkin park' et al) is about record sales, them singing about how hard life is is [cabbage].

3)I'd rather not do anything 24/7 actually. Sure you can listen to music and jog but still neither jogging nor listening to music or combining them is anymore useful/valid/prideful(almost certainly not a word)/"insert any word you want" than playing a game. Also theoretically you could jog and play runescape.

sorry for the off-topicness but i felt it was neccesary.

On-topic: its so hard to quit because people stop for how every many months, look back (at the game) and see somthing new, they play and find out they are not bored staright away and there you have it, playing again.
