July 1, 200719 yr Seems that I can make polls. I added a poll. Please cast your vote. Also, if you can, please leave a post explaining why you chose to vote (Yes, No, Undecided) That will help us determine whether or not the move will be beneficial, plus it's nice to have the users input. Thanks so much, continue with the support! I just thought of another subforum that I believe should be divided. Although we have been talking about merging subforums, I believe that the Debate Forum should be their own forum. The Debate Club is a mature forum where a lot of users discuss important issues. The Debate Club is a forum that is totally different than rants. There is less flaming and less people being immature. There has been a higher traffic in the Debate Club lately, and I think that it deserves it's own spot in the limelight. I know the traffic hasn't been overwhelming, but neither has the rants forum. I think that if anything, the rants forum should be a sub-forum of the Debate Club. The Debate Club just seems more useful and it influences the good parts of Tip.It because it shows that debates can occur without spam or flaming. The rants forum is simply a way for people to blow off steam, not much discussion can flow through that. The Debate Club actually has discussion going on. There usually is no right or wrong in a debate, that's why this forum is so great! Thanks for listening :) Devoted ~Sith: Split to a different topic. Going to try to stay organized. :) Thanks! Thanks Ard for making a sticky in Debate Club about this too! :P I have been asked to bring this topic to Debate Club by an Admin also so I can get input of the actual Debate Club users! That means I need your guys's input on this issue! Post your inputs on the subject! Thanks! :)
July 2, 200719 yr I definitely think that it is ready to be bought out on its own. Looking at the board, I see that 10 threads have been posted on today. Thats quite a few. Also this will bring more traffic to the board and hopefully more posters. And I don't think Debate Club belongs under Rants, because not everything in here is bad. :) 8,325th to 99 Firemaking 3/9/08 | 44,811th to 99 Cooking 7/16/084,968th to 99 Farming 10/9/09 | Runescaper August 2005-March 2010Tip.it Mod Feb. 2008-Sep. 2008 | Tip.it Crew Sep. 2008-Nov. 2009
July 2, 200719 yr there's really not much here that relates to rants anyway, just where would it go after? I painted some stuff and put it on tumblr
July 2, 200719 yr Author I definitely think that it is ready to be bought out on its own. Looking at the board, I see that 10 threads have been posted on today. Thats quite a few. Thanks for your input again Kaphias! :D there's really not much here that relates to rants anyway, just where would it go after? I would guess that if Debate Club were to be moved out from under Rants, then it would be placed directly above or below the Rants Forum. Once again, this is a guess. Thanks for your input! :)
July 2, 200719 yr Personally, I think it's a great idea. Ranting and debating are two separate things, and I'd prefer to have a calm logical debate with someone than an argument because of a rant.
July 2, 200719 yr Not every debate is a rant, and not every rant is a debate. It's time for the Debate Club to have its own solid foundation as a main forum. Linux User/Enthusiast | Full-Stack Software Engineer | Stack Overflow Member | GIMP User...Alright, the Elf City update lured me back to RS over a year ago.
July 2, 200719 yr I still think rants and debate club has similar posting styles to some extent. I personally use the same posting style in rants like I did in debate club. Both forums seem to revolve around the term "argument". I would agree to give debate club a place in a main forum. Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.
July 2, 200719 yr I think it should have its own forum. And just to differentiate for people: A debate and a rant are similar, just like a rant and a suggestion are similar. A good rant includes a suggestion of how to remedy the problem. A debate is a rant that places more emphasis on the intellectual side, exploring all the options that are available, as well as the consequences to those options. A rant is less thorough in content and more superficial in nature, in comparison with a debate. Debates also tend to be more open-ended than rants.
July 4, 200719 yr Author Thanks for the support everyone! :) By seperating the forums, more users wil browse these forums, which will make more posts, thus more debates! I think we all want that, don't we?
July 5, 200719 yr Thanks for the support everyone! :) By seperating the forums, more users wil browse these forums, which will make more posts, thus more debates! I think we all want that, don't we? More users perhaps, but users of what kind? I wouldn't want to see the people from the general forum, the OT, or any other forum come post their stupidty here. Perhaps the fact that the debate club is semi-hidden helps get rid of unwanted visitors. We say tip.it is the "elite" of Rs, that's true, but it's just that the general Rs population is soo dumb and childish that the people here seem intelligent in comparison, while in fact most are simply stupid. Bringing here more common chaps of that nature will dumb down this forum. 2480+ total
July 6, 200719 yr I often wondered what the debate forum was doing as a subforum of rants. It should be moved to a subforum of general discussion or be a forum itself. I support this. : Don't follow me. You might not make it.All your accounts are belong to us now.If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator
July 7, 200719 yr I don't think it really matters whether its a subforum or regular one. It's not going to tremendously affect how this forum is run.
July 11, 200719 yr I don't think moving it from a sub forum to a normal forum will affect it too much, i doubt moving it will even affect it at all. I think what should happen is to change it to a regular forum for about a month to see what differences occur. If the results are negative, such as the debate forum being swarmed with rule breakers and rude people ( i currently like the respectful arguments found here, completely unlike the runescape rant forums where if you're right or wrong you get called a noob or idiot by the opposing people), the debate forum should be remade a sub forum. However, if the results are positive in the forum's favor, such as attracting more people with respect for debating, then it should stay as a regular forum. ~<-S: If the third world war is fought with nuclear bombs, the fourth will be fought with bows and arrows:S->~
July 11, 200719 yr Moving it down to the General Discussion section of the Index would help it greatly. 1) It would stop half the morons from the General Discussion (the one of merged F2P and P2P) to come to the debate club. 2) The loyal patrons would still come, along with the intelligent people from the other sections located down there. 3) This would keep the relative IQ of these forums high. i mean wth no1 cares about that weak noob that was scared of the great almighty lord ZAROS!
July 11, 200719 yr I would also support a move away from rants to something else. But I would worry that an increased volume of traffic would damage the debates going on here. I hate to say it, but in sheer volume of posting, "popular" drives out "good." The new general forums, are awash in "what do you think of XYZ" posts that have driven out decent discussions from the old boards. In reading some of the other threads here, perhaps a discussion board, might be in order with debate as one "anchor" of a couple of discussion groupings. For example, I would love to discuss the whole charter ship gloves thing and the reasoning behind it, but general discussion would get it buried in seconds, and its not exactly a "debate."
October 22, 200718 yr Author Your support is needed in order to make this huge move. Please show your support whether it be positive or negative. Thanks!
October 22, 200718 yr You got my support 38% of Tip.Iters put stupid made up statistics in their sigs. If you are one of the 62% that don't, put this in your sig.
October 22, 200718 yr Tip.It Debaters deserve their own forum. I think a whole forum to our own would be extremely beneficial as not only do we get more traffic, we also are able to "recruit" new people who will come in to give their mature opinions on matters that are affecting and could potentially affect Runescape society. The Rants forum could be placed as a sub-forum of the Debate Club, as the posts there are less mature and organised. Flame wars break out rather frequently during the rants there as people are mostly looking for a way to let off their anger due to certain events that may have irked them. Thus I support this move. Let the Debate Club play a more prominent and important role in the development of Runescape society. My BlogJoin the Campaign for more F2P Bank Space![bleep], my parrot has better grammar than you.
October 22, 200718 yr I sure support it. Debates really don't have anything to do with rants, and it deserves it's own forum. October 23, 200718 yr Great idea. My only worry is that, as many people have said, this will bring in unwanted traffic from the not-so-intellectually-minded tipiters. If that happens, we'll have practically destroyed the debate club. I think that to do this, there'd really need to be a topic-creating standard that would be upheld in the Debate Club to keep it simply at the intellectual level it's at now. I've seen many posts that are near to a full browser page long, that can explore all the sides of an entire topic and then make a convincing argument for one or another. However, by comparison, General has far too many posts that are simple one-liners. Admittedly, sometimes in Debate Club your point's already been made, but I know I saw one really brutal one (by my standards) that shouldn't have been in here at all. My problem is that, moved out to a more noticeable position, we'd simply increase the numbers of these kinds of posts and degrade the quality of our own little private community. I think the rules about spam and things like that should be FAR more strictly enforced in Debate Club than anywhere else. scimmy owns nuff said This is what I'm worried about. this isn't thought-provoking or debatable whatsoever, and so doesn't add to the debate in any way. This should be able to be reported and removed in Debate Club. I saw a post that said this in a debate earlier this week, and I think moving the forum out would provoke more of these, thereby possibly wrecking the debate for those more serious debaters, and none of us would enjoy it anymore. I realize this post is pretty long-winded, but I had to get it all out of my system and make it fully clear. What I'm trying to say is, one-line posts should not be permitted in Debate Club. =P However, I support the idea completely. I just hope we get more good traffic than bad. Being immature is a part of being mature.
November 1, 200718 yr rants dont relate in any way to debate. we could debate an update is it good or bad. How would that be a rant? needs to be on it own main forum or a sub forum in a more aprorpiate forum such as general. Goals achieved: lvl 99 Cooking, Fishing and Fletching.Surrey CC and Liverpool FC fan for life!
November 1, 200718 yr Yes, why not. Rants & debate club forums have nothing in common anyway, so it makes no sense they're in the same section. 2480+ total
November 1, 200718 yr I kind of like the fact only selected people post on these topics. I'm afraid if it gets moved to a forum of its own it will get turned into Rants Version 2. I agree with klankaos about everything. Maybe a few extra moderators to take care of the forums. With the debate standard make it a requirement that your responses need to be more than 5 words or something. So that people are constructive with their views and actually "debate". November 1, 200718 yr I think it should be its own forum because ranting is complaining about something which is not debating where both sides are showing both sides of an issue and debating about it.
