Tip.It Times Presents: I have the answer, Mr. Runescape!

Runescape can help you type faster, but not properly with the good technique. Learning the correct technique saves a lot of time in the long run as opposed to learning it any other way.

The rest of the points were very weak.

Pointless article, stop making excuses, Rs like any other mmorpg is a waste of time, and you all know it.

I agree with what Ginger_Warrior and Rebdragon (and some others) already said.

But most of all, I found it rather shocking that you left out the aspect of learning English for non-native English speakers.

Because RuneScape learnt me one thing, and that is English. As a Dutchie myself, playing RS really helps my English. Not with perfect grammer structures, but by having your mind set to English, to think in English. And that is what makes a big difference. Strangely enough, I'm pretty sure that it also helps your listening to English, because you are able to understand words spoken or read much faster. To me, it wasnt a big surprise that my friend and I both got a 9.7/10 for a English listening test (such high marks are really rare on school in Holland in the 14th grade on highest level), while there were quite some people with 2/10. I dont say this to brag, but because I know that we both got ourself much more into English (by playing RS, watching movies etc) then the other classmates, who didn't.

So for me it's pretty obvious that RS helps my English.

But you didnt name that, and thought of other (rather lame) ideas like math. I'm sorry, but I have pretty high marks at math, and I always use a calculater. Much faster, and you are bound to make mistakes sometime when you don't.

I agree with most of the points made, but I don't think anyone should play RS under the guise of studying.

Typing - I agree, but I feel you can learn typing a lot faster by typing out a random book than by the occasional chat in RS.

Math - I don't know about the rest of the world, but I use a calculator for almost everything I do that involves math in RS. I could learn a lot more by reading through a maths textbook.

History - History isn't just about weapons, and even less about specific medieval weaponry. I also think that at least five children have mentioned mithril, runite, or adamantite in science papers about metals used in the dark ages.

Writing - There really is little credibility in this. By watching LOTR you can gather as much writing inspiration as by playing RS for fifteen hours straight.

While I also agree that RS might help in learning English or economics, I think you can learn double as much by reading an English magazine or reading just one paragraph from an economics textbook.

I agree that RS is good for improving typing speed, math, history and writing to a tiny extent, but it is NOT a time-effective way of learning. To be completely honest, I think anyone can learn a lot more by just sitting at a park bench watching people walk by, or driving around aimlessly, or doing anything really.

Saying that RS is educational, while technically true, is misleading and an exagerration.

My response to all of this: You must be really short of articles to use :)

I wrote this, if I remember correctly, only a few days after registering here, and albeit it was very rushed and poorly written. So now, take the article as an invitation to think and examine, rather than something to just read. I do realize that there are many things that I have missed, and an article of this sorts should have also examined the cons as well; which I didn't. Examine this for yourself, and look deeper than the words.

Some of the comments there made very little sense, ginger warrior had a lot of it right. Since when was history about battle axes and scimitars? and 5th grade math is usually the highest level you will ever use in runescape, so that really doesn't help. The only thing you mentioned that I can agree with is about the typing.

Runescape teaches us a lot of things, but nothing except the typing is mentioned in the article. I am pretty disappointed in the quality of this one.

I did indeed notice this. Before I discovered runescape I had a typing speed of roughly 10-20 wpm and had to write general math equations out. Now my typing speed is roughly 60-80 wpm and I can spit out the answers to massive general math problems right out of my head in seconds (for example 1,264,344 + 348,201 (which by the way is 1,612,545)). Runescape is certainly quite good at aiding basic skills. And nobody should be putting down those basic skills as they are the foundation of everything above them.

After reading through most of these posts some benefits haven't really been mentioned.

Economics, time management, teamwork.

Many people buy and sell on runescape on a big scale. "Employing" people to pick flax, spin bowstrings, chop trees, mine rune essence etc to make a profit. Running people backwards and forwards carrying raw materials etc to the bank.

If I smith so many bars today I can then make so many of this tomorrow. This might get me so many levels then I sell them to get the money for this or that so I can........ etc. Almost all of the skills are linked and to do well some planning is required. Working out the most efficent way to chop trees, to rune craft, or to do that quest I've got to do that quest which requires 52 thieving etc. It envolves quite a lot of thinking and problem solving, something which is very useful for todays society.

Runescape would be very boring if everyone did everything on their own. There's a lot of interaction between players, teamwork for certain games like castlewars etc. It is also something very important for today's society as I feel its lacking slightly in the way we live our lives.

I've made many friends from around the world improving my relations with foreigners. Learning to a certain extent different cultures.

Of course experiences are different for everyone but I think playing runescape has many advantages!!

first of all i would like to say that this was a very pleasant article to read but for myself not everything you said was true.

i must say i agree on the typing part but leetspeak isnt a problem because i use leetspeak myself some time i can type taht faster then normal english but since i know every button on my keyboard i can also type with decent grammar and vocabulary at a good speed.

for math i must say that i always se a calculator to calculate the xp i need and what i have to do for it etc but i always try to estimate what i need to do and how much time i will need for it. doing this has also made it easy for me to estimate lengths etc in real life wich was quite difficult for me.

there history part is just "excrement of a bull" because runescape is fake and has nothing to do with real life history. if this is true then you might aswell go to religion and talk about zamorak and saradomin.

being a person who has difficulties to remember large lists of vocabulary i have had great support from my runescape knowledge when i had to learn about food and drinks because i already knew 90% of the words from runescape.

Jwrm22, 1k is 1000gp not 100. K as in kilo which means thousand in greek or latin or something.

Kaiy is right. Runescape focuses more on the street smarts of business rather than the book smarts, which I think the writer should've based his writing on.

I would put a cool link here but I don't know how.

For me, spelling wasn't increased. I played a game before runescape that really helped with spelling. I don't know if runescape really helped me on writing things that much, but I guess if I decided to write something, it would have.

History is one thing that really did help me. I figured out a lot about weapons, and alloys. I guess it also helped me a bit with math, because it has kept me doing a bit of math. During the summer, I would usually never do math. Now, I do it a lot more than I use to. The only thing that really helped me with math so much, is my awsome math teacher. Because of him, I could do 58*62 in my head.

I suppose I should stop lurking around this topic and leave my reply.

Many of us play Runescape, all with different reasons. My reason to play is because of the friends that I've made, and the (somewhat) interesting community. I can say I agree somewhat to the article too, but I must say, I hate it when someone says Runescape 'has been wasting our lives' and 'I'm so happy I'm finally leaving this stupid game that's been wasting my life'. It hasn't. I can't pinpoint the exact reason why it hasn't, but I do know that I've made some awesome friends in-game who treat me as if they knew me in real life. Compared to the rest of the 'omg u stupid n00b gimme stuff' community, these people are great. I know if I say it 'helps you socially', I'll be flamed to oblivion, but I honestly think this game has made me more friendly in the real world, among numerous other things. Hopefully someone else might be able to clear it up and find out the reason Runescape hasn't been wasting our lives, because I do know there is at least one. And so, I'll leave you all to ponder at that...

Yeah, I've always been a pretty good typer, but playing runescape just makes me totally blow typing out of the water. The last typing test I took I got like... 70-90 wpm+.

Good article.

Yeah, you're totally wright, i learned so much things, and the most important thing, i nearly-mastered English, when i began RS, it was really difficult to me to understand all those stories, quests, and guides, but now, I read it as it was Spanish, and that helps in school too, i have A+ in English 8-)

This post was wrote in 82 seconds, before I've played RS, i never could even think of that, now, it's an everyday activity.

Thanks to RS, from Lit~

runescape spoiled my grammar. in scool test i once wrote u instead you, tat instead that....etc, but it did improved my typing but i don't really care if it's educational or not.

I used to do that too sometimes :P However, once I realized how awful my writing had become just because of typing, I started typing out words fully, and in the end I am a much better typer because of it :P

How about learning about free enterprise, work ethic(any idea how long it takes to make 1k steel plate bodies???), entrepeneurialism?

My kids turned me onto the game to help them with a quest, I became a member, and all 3 of my kids play. They are learning alot about how to deal with inconsiderate people in an effective way, how to logically think through a problem (no quest guides in our house till we just can't figure it out!)...so whether intentional or not, I find it very educational.

I agree on two points: typing and imaginative writing. Runescape, as a computer social game, does greatly help in increasing one's typing speed and skills, regardless of 1337speech or any of that: the fact remains that it DOES actually help in that department. However, there are other, more efficient ways to do say, such as writing essays and stories on your computer, etc. I also agree on the part about Runescape and increasing your imaginative capabilities, since it does play upon your imagination: however, I would like to say that you could do so far more efficiently by reading books, novels, and fantasy epics. Besides, creativity is not exactly a skill that can be expanded: it is more of a talent, whether you have it or not. You can try to use more of your creative potential, but you will never be able to surpass someone who has more talent than you do.

On all other points, such as mathematics and history, I disagree with the author. The maths that is involved in Runescape is very simple, and even then EVERYONE uses calculators, whether conventional ones or special ones developed by fansites like Tip.it. Runescape does nothing whatsoever to assist you in your maths skills, and even if it does the assistance is minimal and will only be significant if you already suck at maths: which, if that is the case, you would be better off getting tuition.

Regarding history: one word, ridiculous. Do you think people who study history are stupid or something? I can assure you that no respectful historian, or just history students, would EVER confuse an economical axe with a battle axe. For you to suggest it so is insulting at best. And if you are going for historical accuracy, then Runescape is probably the worst place to start. Take one example: Crossbows. Do you really think that crossbows are one-handed? WRONG! Crossbows in real life are heavy, two handed weapons, and you most certainly cannot wield a shield with one! They are also excruciatingly slow to load, probably two shots every minute. Not like Runescape, where you fire off a bolt like a handgun. If you look to Runescape for your historical needs, you will be greviously misinformed.

Why do you resist? My experiments are only helping humanity push the boundaries of the Art of Toxicology... you should be proud to be one of my victims.
