July 17, 200718 yr I just wanted to find out which albums made the grade for you guys, since we usually just list bands. However albums are a lot different than just liking a band because they require more individuality and usually a good album will have a different feel from another even if it's from the same artist or band. I'll start and you dont need to go as in depth as me; Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) This is my favourite album simply because it never gets tiring, it has a spaced out feel that when listening to the album as a whole(which you really should do with most Floyd albums) makes it very relaxing and then at the same time flows into songs like Time or Brain Damage that are seperatley masterpeices of music. This albums subject is dark basically its about the effect time can have on any person and drive them insane (which of course means it's heavily influenced by Syd Barrett an earlier founding member of Pink Floyd who himself went crazy) and yet it never goes too dark and always contains an aire of humor, unlike their later album The Wall no doubt because of David Gilmour's heavy influence as oppose to Roger Waters. The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) The Beatles' on top form so it has to be a masterpeice. I mean this was their entry into the psychedelic rock scene that was going on with people like Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd (with The Piper Gates At Dawn) and to some extent Bob Dylan. However this really masters the genre in a mainstream sense. The Beatles used their past image and transformed it with the era. Songs on the album include Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds a paraody of LCD and vividly explaining Lennon's sons drawing which must have been combined with a acid trip to write. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965) This is my favorite Dylan album because of his diversity in it while still keeping to the main theme of Highway 61 and the people and events that you can encounter on it. It's really a folk album with the highway featuring as a somewhat of a folk tale, which is summed up nicley in the ending eleven minute track Desalation Row. Practically every track on the album is brilliant with the opening track being his ultimate alienation song Like A Rolling Stone and the track called Highway 61. It's a lot lighter than the previous mentioned albums due to it's nature, and it's nice to just relax and listen to it on a hot summers day since it has that summer vibe. Pink Floyd - The Division Bell (1994) This to me is the epitome of Pink Floyds re-discovery of their music after the Roger Waters led era which severley damped the mood to their music both with ego battles and which his music influence. You can definatley tell the lack of Waters presence (since he left the band in 1985). This is like the extreme of Floyds spacey feeling in their music which contrasts so much of The Wall as their most claustrophobic sound. Dark Side Of The Moon was really a cross between the two feelings. This wins over The Wall since The Wall is incredibly depressing - thats not to say it isn't brilliant because it is. So i should mention it here. The Wall has great songs and is theatrical rock music at it's best by far (live shows included and the film) but Waters had way to much influence on that one, and if Gilmour pushed himself a bit futher, i think it would have turned out better. Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland - 1968 This has to be Hendrix's highlight of his unfortunatley shortly lived career due to his death in 1970. I love this album so much cos' of its breezy feel combined with a great dose of his unique style of rock and lyrics. My favourite song on the album is probably Crosstown Traffic however other great tracks include Voodoo Chile, Long Hot Summer Night, Burning Of The Midnight Lamp and a cover of Dylans All Along The Watchtower which Dylan said he always thinks of as a Hendrix song. Overall it's just a fun album full of orginality and great music. With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.
July 17, 200718 yr Hybrid - Wider Angle Classical/breakbeat crossover stuff. Incredible. Lost Prophets - Start Something Great all round album, every songs ace from start to finish. The Ataris - So Long, Astoria Awesome album. Errm, this is getting a bit samey but yeah, just a great album!
July 18, 200718 yr In general these albums are the ones that have affected to me the most and still after years, they sound great. Iron Maiden - piece of Mind What can you say? The legendariest Iron Maiden album ever and contains one of my longtime favourites, The Trooper. Their newest album might be their first one with no songs that could be left out, but this album is something you can't describe with words. Stratovarius - Infinite Totally got hooked into this stuff when it was released. Hunting high&low's intro was just something that totally drained me into it. This year at Tuska festivals (biggest metal festivals in Finland) Stratovarius got the honour to be the last band to perform there and when they started it with that song, I was in ecstacy. Metallica - Master of Puppets This album was one of the main reasons why I got into metal music. Even tho it's impossible to say which one is best from Metallica's 3 first albums, this one has special memories. Burzum - Filosofem Could aswell put some other Burzum album to this part, but after a long decicion I got into this. No other album has managed to be as atmospheric, raw and same time beautiful. Mayhem - De Mysteriis dom Sathanas Probably the only album ever that is full of songs that could ALL be considered as legends. No matter which one do you play, you can honestly say it's a legendary song. With Attila at vocals it sounds also something so unordinary. Also should not forget non-musical things around this albums... I'd rather die for what I believe in than live for anything else.Name Removed by Administrator ~Turtlefemm
July 18, 200718 yr Well I don't know about all time, but Wolfmother's self-titled is pretty darn good. Last.Fm My Bloggy Proud to have served on Tip.it Crew
July 18, 200718 yr Ion Dissonance - Minus The Herd. Mainly because I bought it the other day but in terms of metal, it's so my style. I love it. It's a catharsis of sound even though it's structure is odd and the chords are dissonant. Some of the breakdowns and riffs are the best I have ever heard. Tool - Lateralus. I'll add this one at the moment just for good measure. Great album with some of my absolute favourite songs to play on guitar ("The Patient" is a definate favourite. Even though it's in 5/4 and oddly structured, it's just got this incredible flow to it). This music, as with much tool music, is unconvensional and worth the risk because it's obviously payed of for them with critical acclaim. A Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms (French for Sea of Names) Ok, ok, couldn't help myself. I adore this album. It's always been a favourite ever since I heard it years ago. Billy Howerdel can write a mean song. Opeth - Blackwater Park. Might as well keep going. :P I love this album. The songs are all great quality, well written and finishing off with a gem like the song Blackwater Park makes this album a great experience. The lyric in the song Blackwater Park of "Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark, The sun sets forever over Blackwater Park" always gives me shivers. Jeff Buckley - Grace. This album is adorable. He was an incredible songwriter and had an incredible voice. In my opinion the Grace album diserves every bit of critical acclaim it's got. Rage Against The Machine - Self-Titled I've loved this one for years too. The funky, crunchy and memorable licks, riffs and solos of Tom Morello covered with the deeper-than-just-about-any-other hip-hop lyrics by Zack De la Rocha make rage a favourite band of mine. Even though it's all about politics with no relevance to me, the Lyrics demand you be moved by issues of capitalism, oppression and corruption among a swag of others. John Butler Trio - Sunrise Over Sea Superbly crafted songs by John Butler. His prowess on 11, 12 and 6 string guitars along with his banjo and slide guitars due to years of busking make his work quality to the core. This would be my favourite of all of his albums to date due to the great songs and the mood they portray. I remember seeing him live supporting this release. He's as good live as he is in any recording. Slipknot - Self-Titled. Been listening to this one for as long as I can remember too. This, along with "Iowa" stand out above most other of Slipknot's work for me. Brutal and unforgiving to the core. Some people say they lack talent but for me, listening to slipknot is more about catharsis than anything. It's dark, dissolusioned and full of smashing drums, crunching low tuned guitars and anger. Tool - Aenema. Love this one too. Great songs with themes ranging from addiction to Los Angeles breaking off of the U.S. mainland and getting "flushed away" to reveal beautiful, scenic, Arizona Bay. Great musical adaptation of a Bill Hicks comedy piece. Third Eye is another reference to Hicks comedy and an epic piece about reawakening to round off this masterpiece. Tool - Undertow. Ok, you can probably guess I'm a huge Tool fan by now. :P This will be the last for now. Here you have rough, rocky and unforgiving old-school Tool. Film clips for the songs "Sober" and "Prison Sex" are some of the best I've seen. Great songs and great fun to play. :P
July 18, 200718 yr Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde I could try to say something about this album. But my words couldn't do it justice. You'd need a poet or something. The album that started it all for me. Thanks Putter. Donald [bleep]en - The Nightfly I think this would go for my favourite album at the moment. The music makes you feel so good and relaxed. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s the ultimate album for late nights. And where a lot of people criticize [bleep]en for being too smooth, I think he gets away with it. Because what he sings is so cynical, this gives a great contrast. I never get tired of it and I keep hearing new things. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Abbattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus I haven̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t been listening to Cave for very long, but this album gets me in a way that doesn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t happen very much. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s so diverse. Funny at one moment and harsh and confronting the other. Cave is such an amazing singer as well, you can really feel how much he cares for his music, and the bad seeds are a fantastic band. I̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢m really digging the background vocals giving it this real Gospelish feel. Not your typical blues album, but you shouldn̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t ignore it. We all know there is a law, and that law it is love. And we all know there is a war coming, coming from above̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâæ Mothers of Invention - We're only in it for the money TAKE THAT, YOU FREAKING HIPPIES AND BEATLES! Nobody escapes from Zappa., everybody is being mocked, and he gets away with it. Even in the summer of love. I never get enough of it. So much to enjoy. Flower Power sucks! Lou Reed - Berlin Ooh. You won̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t feel very happy after this album. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s so bleak and sad. And Reed is so perfect for that. He̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s one of those singers that can̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t sing but he̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s the only one who can̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t sing the way he can̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t sing, if you know what I mean. When you̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ve got a moment on your own, go sit next to your stereo, plug in the headphones and take this journey. Be sure that you haven̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t got anything sharp objects around you. Neil Young ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ Live at Massey Hall ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãâ71 This has got to be one of the finest live performances I have ever heard. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s so pure and intimate, almost fragile. I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t play it too much because I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t want to ruin it for myself. But when I do, damn, tears in my eyes every time. Yea, another live performance. While Deep Purple is good on a normal studio album, they never really got more than good in my eyes. It̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢s this live performance that really displays their brilliance. Enjoying every second of this legendary rock ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¹Ãân roll document. Steely Dan - Aja Because it is the ultimate jazz fusion album. And it has got the coolest drum solo ever. And it has got deacon blues. And it has got Black Cow. And it has got Peg. And it has got Home at Last. And it has got I got the News. And it has got Josie. And they all get me. Public Enemy - It takes a nation of millions to hold us back Because there needs to be a rap album on my list. And this is legendary stuff. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!
July 18, 200718 yr Satenza's stolen most of mine, so i'll add some others not mentioned: This is probably the definitive Oasis album for me, it starts off with a bang, and reaches highs and lows with songs that stand up very well on their own but together work fantastically well. The sound of one of the most painful love situations channelled through possibly the greatest guitarist who's ever lived. To me, this is Clapton's absolute masterpiece. It contains the absolute legendary Layla, but also many other equally powerful heart wrenching songs of a love that Clapton couldn't get. Contains more arena filling anthems than you can shake a stick at. Sheer alternative brilliance. See above. I've lost interest in writing a clever review, so i'll just say if you haven't already listened to it, do. "Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"
July 18, 200718 yr Alaska - Between the Buried and me I can't say too much about it, but I absolutely adore this album. Breathing is Irrelevant - Ion Dissonance Listening to this album got me into avant-garde metal. I'm not saying their other albums aren't good, but to me, they just don't match up. Versions - Poison the Well I was highly anticipating this albums release, and it not only matched, but went beyond my expectations. I've heard lots of bad reveiws of this album from Poison the Well fans, but this album just does it for me. Except for the last two or three songs maybe.. Flashlight Seasons - Gravenhurst Amazing album. Absolution - Muse To be fair, I don't think I've heard a Muse song I don't like, but this album was just great for me. Cool.
July 18, 200718 yr Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium Got it almost a year now, I still like listening to it. Some songs are fun to play with the guitar, and some are difficult to find out. No song I dont like, except 'If'. If you have heard it, you know what I meen. Short, nothing interesting. Fatboy Slim - Palookaville, You've come a long way baby, Why try harder http://www.astralwerks.com/press/fatboy ... aville.jpg (Could be offensive for some) & Listened 14 songs made by fatboy slim, and None dissapointed me. I should get some more songs, but they are all scattered between these 3 albums. Thats right, 2 artists. :) [http://woopidoo2.deviantart.com][Tip.it Moderator from Dec 10, 2006 to 03 Sep, 2008]
July 18, 200718 yr Author Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde I could try to say something about this album. But my words couldn't do it justice. You'd need a poet or something. July 18, 200718 yr Like Woopidoo, I really enjoy Fatboy Slim, especially his Greatest Hits. REM Awesome album which I got for Christmas, excellent for those car journies whether long or short :D Some songs are really fast paced, some are slower but all are enjoyable to listen and sing a long to. Talking Heads Band I'm currently listening to. Fronted by David Byrne. Unfortunately the band have stopped creating music but again are awesome to listen to. Favourite tracks are Once in a Lifetime, Burning Down The House and many more. David Bowie What's there to say? :D Very nice artist who always has a true meaning behind his music. May not be so popular with the MTV generation but I love it. I could mention more artists, maybe in a later post :D Retired 8th October 2007 | 99 Fishing | 99 Cooking | Owner of a Red Mask and 2 Santa Hats |
July 18, 200718 yr The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead One of the best albums The Smiths have ever produced. The dry humour sprinkled throughout just adds to the greatness of it. David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Bowie has created some amazing work, but this, in my opinion, is him at his best. Jarvis Cocker - Jarvis Jarvis is a shining example of Cocker's style. It's just amazing. Offline and unavailable.
July 18, 200718 yr Metallica - The Black Album The most sold album ever? This album is just a piece of art. Sadly for Metallica peoples expectation to the next album got skyhigh and they couldn't make another album which was even close to be as good as this one. Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters will never lose their name as some of the best songs ever made. 99 ranged | 99 magic | 99 defence | 99 hitpointsRemember, it's just a gameFeel free to add me on RS. :) Always ready for a chat.
July 18, 200718 yr Within Temptation - Mother Earth The singles Ice Queen and Mother Earth were pretty big in the Dutch charts in 2001, and this was the first album I bought. It basically was the birth of my music taste. Within Temptation - Enter Mother Earth had some pretty dark tracks, but Within Temptation's debut album was a lot darker still. It's the album that made me appreciate harsh vocals. Probably their best album, at least a whole lot better than their latest releases, which pretty much all sound the same. I've decided to ignore anything after their cover of Running Up That Hill Therion - Lemuria This album is one pinnacles of the combination of classical instrumental pieces and vocals and metal that Therion pioneered. One of those rare albums that simply doesn't have a single weak song on it. According to my parents I have been a fan of classical music since I was three (according to them the first time I payed attention to TV was when they showed a classical concert) and this album more or less rekindled that spark of interest. Haggard - Eppur Si Muove If Therion pioneered the combination of classical and metal, Haggard perfected it with this album. The band's mastermind Asis Nasseri, who writes all the music himself, compltely trashes the old stereotype of the unwashed, uneducated metalhead. He tells the story of Gallileo in English, German, Italian and Latin. The production of the album is extremely crisp, which is something that had been slightly lacking on previous occasions. Probably my favourite album of all time. Aina - Days of Rising Doom: The Metal Opera I bought this album on a gamble in 2004. At ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì23 this is (I think) the second most expensive CD I ever bought. I listened to it extensively throughout my weeklong school trip to the ancient city of Rome, and I still get swept back to what's probably the greatest week of my life whenever I listen to this album. I took the gamble to buy this based on two things. First, the awesome lineup of musicians. It's pretty much a who's-who of European power metal, and they've put together what's probably the best album of the genre in quite some time. Second, the packaging. For my ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¡Ãâì23 I got a hardcover booklet in stead of a CD, and a bonus CD (demo's, instrumentals and bonus tracks) and DVD (making off). This is the kind of effort that makes me want to buy the CDs I download. Arjen Anthony Lucassen is probably one of the most underappreciated musical geniuses of our time. After his career as lead singer in two 80s glam metal band ended, he went on to create Ayreon, a series of prog metal concept albums inspired heavily by the rock operas of the 60's and 70's like Andrew Lloyd Weber's "Jesus Christ Superstar", The Who's "Tommy", and Pink Floyd's "The Wall". He writes all the music and texts himself, and throughout the years he's managed to get some of the greatest (metal) musicians of Europe to appear on his albums, including Bruce [bleep]inson (Flight of the Migrator) and James Labrie (The Human Equation). Although prog metal is usually the genre these albums get grouped under Arjen Lucassen blends many other styles into his albums for a result that has to be heard to believed. Over the years Ayreon has spawned some great spinoff projects like Ambeon, Star One and Stream of Passion. July 19, 200718 yr Breathing is Irrelevant - Ion Dissonance Listening to this album got me into avant-garde metal. I'm not saying their other albums aren't good, but to me, they just don't match up. I'll have to pick that up. Can you reccomend any artists similar to Ion Dissonance that I should look up?
July 19, 200718 yr Metallica - The Black Album The most sold album ever? This album is just a piece of art. Sadly for Metallica peoples expectation to the next album got skyhigh and they couldn't make another album which was even close to be as good as this one. Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters will never lose their name as some of the best songs ever made. I was under the impression that the Eagles' Greatest Hits (one of them, at least :XD:) was the best selling ever, unless you don't consider it an actual album because it's a greatest hits...but anyways (and sorry for not havin pictures, I'm not currently at my own computer...): Queen - Night at the Opera: Well, not much can actualy be said for this album, you pretty much just have to listen to it all the way through. There's diversity in every single song, varying from olde english- type of song to...you know...Bohemian Rhapsody :anxious: . Amazingly written album, Queen at their best. Boston - Boston: Even if you don't like Boston much, you've gotta admit, it deserves a place in "Best album ever". Every song on the album was a hit, and it has to be one of the fastest selling albums ever. It was an amazing start to their career...and also proved to be their end, indirectly. Kansas - Leftoverture: The songs on this album, one of them putting Kansas at the top (Carry on Wayward Son, of course), were brilliantly written, and even more brilliantly played. Also, it produced some of Kansas's best, albeit underrated, songs. Some epic guitar in "The Wall" and "Magnum Opus". Styx - The Grand Illusion: Spawned some of the most popular keyboard...err...riffs? Don't know what word to use for it, but "Fooling Yourself" is the best example. Also, Come Sail Away...another rock anthem. Many others I'd like to mention, but wouldn't exactly qualify as "Best Album Ever". Also, I'd like to mention that the albums I chose, I chose because pretty much ever song on the album is as good, if not better than the last. Honorable mention: Yes - The Yes Album "El que no arriesga no gana"
Despised Icon, Into the Moat, On Broken Wings, a Life Once Lost, Symphony in Peril, and they're instrumental, but you could also try Behold... the Arctopus. Sorry I can't give you any more. Last.fm might have some better suggestions though? EDIT: Another band that just came to me, Glass Casket. They're like Between the Buried and Me without the singing and jazz interludes (mostly because two of their members are in BTBAM). Cool.
July 19, 200718 yr . Pink Floyd - The Wall I love this album..mainly because of the..err..don't know how to say it, the 'story' it tells. It's just really deep and the way they play is amazing. Nightwish - Once North American cover art Nightwish is just awesome. They play with a different style than any other band I've heard..it's a perfect mix of operatic vocals and metal. This album in particularly my favorite..although I love most of their others too (Wishmaster, Over the hills & far away, Century Child...).
July 19, 200718 yr Ah, you made me listen to now! But it's is a great album probably next on my list. Yea, it was a bit of a tie between highway, blonde on blonde and time out of mind. Since you mentioned Highway I went for Blonde. Too balance it out on the heavy stuff in the list. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!

The Hunter CD is on my list now for sure. :P
July 19, 200718 yr Top 10 Runner up's = Various albums by: Bob Dylan, The Smashing Pumpkins, The White Stripes, Pantera, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Cure, and Tool.. + more. 10. Neil Young - "Harvest" Amazing guitar work from Neil, the first time I listened to this album I was inspired to pick up a guitar and start playing myself. 9. Bob Marley - "Catch a fire" One of my chill-out albums, wonderful rhythm in the tracks, especially "Midnight Ravers" 8. Rage Against The Machine - "The Battle Of Los Angeles" & "Self Titled Album" tied. Both of these albums make me want to get up and just break stuff, powerful and intense. Also has some tracks that send shivers down my spine line "Born of a broken man", "Voice of the voiceless", and "Settle for nothing" 7. System of a Down - "Steal this album!" & their "Self Titled Album", tied.. Another one of those power albums like the Rage ones, makes me want to get up, and I end up head banging to Daron's guitar work, and singling along to Serj's frantic vocals. 6. Sublime - "Sublime" Self Titled Album... An old favorite of mine, that has more personal value than anything. One of those you can stick in the cd player and cruise, or stick it in the boom box and play it at a BBQ surrounded by friends. 5. Nirvana - "Nevermind" I actually remember hearing this when it came out, and I was born in 1990, so i was still very young. Cant beat Kurts gut wrenching vocals... 4. The Beatles - "Abbey Road" One of those classics... cant help but sing along to it and think of good memories while listening to it. 3. The Doors - "Scattered Sun" & "The Soft Parade" Cant beat Mr. Mojo Risin'... the lyrics, mysticism, and groovy riffs by the guitarist and keyboardist. So original and WAY ahead of its time in my opinion. 2. Pink Floyd - "The Wall" First Floyd album I ever listened to... I was listening to this several times through as i was reading a book set during WWII so everything fit as i was reading it... I still find myself watching the moving trying to pick out things I've missed. 1. Pink Floyd - "Dark Side of The Moon" ...Angels sing, audible LSD.... this will be the album I want played at my funeral...
July 19, 200718 yr 5. Nirvana - "Nevermind" I actually remember hearing this when it came out, and I was born in 1990 Haha, right. :P Nevermind got released in '91. Signature by Maurice SendakWhen the stars make you drool just like a pasta fazool, that's amore!
