Any classic rock fans out there?

Well then...maybe you just don't know enough bands? I mean, if I were to listen to modern rock, I would get bored within minutes with all the mainstream bands because they all sound exactly the same, and you definitely can't say the same about the bands of the 60's-80's.

I always find comments like this a bit weird.

Well, of course music from the 80s isn't the same as the music from the 60s. You do realize that you're comparing a period of 20 years full of music to 'modern day music', right. And it's not like they only made interesting music in those periods. There's just as much crap in the 60s as there is now. Or do you think those twelve (? maybe thriteen) bands you just mentioned where the only bands that made music in that period of 20 years. Don't you think there would be another let's say 10 bands trying to sound like let's say The Beatles? But they just didn't survive time, because they weren't good enough. Same goes for modern day music; there's a ton of bands trying to sound like Coldplay, but how many of them do you think will be listened to in 20 years time? Exactly.

Ok. Why ask "Or do you think those twelve (? maybe thriteen) bands you just mentioned where the only bands that made music in that period of 20 years." that question? I didn't say that was what I thought, nor did I make any comment that would lead anyone to believe that that is what I thought. Of course I don't think they were the only ones making music, I was just stating that the difference in the sound of their music is tremendous...

And a band trying to sound like the Beatles but weren't good enough? HA, the Beatles may've written some good songs, but they weren't the world's best musicians. They came along at the right time, with the right sound.

I mean, the whole point of my post was to say that if you were to look at some random teenage kid's playlist on Itunes right now, it would have either/or a mix of this: mainstream rap/hip-hop and mainstream punk rock (i.e. Greenday, Fall Out Boy, and other stuff that sounds exactly the same). I won't say that there's no good modern rock, I'm just saying that thorughout the 60's and 70's, there was alot more difference in the sound of it, because they weren't afraid to do something different.

It is because you said that everything now sounds the same. And I wondered if you thought that there weren't any other bands in that period than those you mentioned that might sound the same as the ones you mentioned. It really isn't that hard to name a few handfull of modern day bands that don't sound the same. Maybe you haven't heard enough modern day bands/solo artists.

And yes, a band trying to sound like the Beatles but weren't goot enough. They came at the right time with the right sound, they basically 'invented' the sound. Now you wouldn't think that there were a few bands trying to imitate them for succes? But they just couldn't pull it off? Just like you've got bands trying to imitate other music nowadays. You could always change the Beatles for another band of course. It was just an example.

Classic rock is the only rock mate. My desktop is a picture of Jim Morrison, all the bands in my library are classic rock, I have posters of Pink Floyd , Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin, I'm wearing a pinkfloyd shirt as I'm typing this. I'm a classic rock nut.

Wheres LP when you need him, I think he has over 20 hours of pink floyd?

You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "(bleep) you" right under your nose. Try it sometime. I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetery, and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say "Holden Caulfield" on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say "(bleep) you."

Probably about a half of my Ipod is classic rock. It's good music and it's pretty much what I grew up listening to (mainly Beatles).

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

Since when is there a need for LP?

The best advice in life is to take your time and don't live too fast.

What a silly question, its the only music I listen to.

My parents got me into it when I was a kid, thank them. I hate mainstream music since the 90's [except a few bands]. All this new stuff is really [cabbage] in my opinion.

I go through their old LP's in my basement all the time. Its great being able to enjoy the music your parents lived through.

Im with you really also. I got a Buddy Holly CD and become hooked due to my Dad being a fan. I recently got out a 40 yr old Dynatron (record player) and a load of 45s and listen to them. Theres something about records which sound more natural I think.

I also like classic rock because it was written by the musicians themselves, and they actually play instruments too. And they are very good.

I know that metal and others do that, but with songwriters for rap, r&b, etc. there is no talent there. Just singing. Not even, actually.

Classic rock sounds very good, but it is quite complex too sometimes. It can be simple too (the Beatles' early stuff)

The lyrics are also deep/simple and about various things, none of them being about pimped rides, shorties, demoralized women, bling, etc.

Classic rock will always be good. It will never fade away. 8-) \'

Classic rock, to me, is something revered as standing the test of time, as it's been a couple decades and we still know the names/lyrics. I don't have much if any in my collection, true, but I have friends and family who do, plus a few radio stations when I for some reason listen to such a device, to keep me with a bare minimum knowledge of the era. It's good because it's not PRETENTIOUS or not nearly enough to make me mad. The feelings expressed were generally positive and generally not whiny whatsoever. It seems to me just good, fun music.

panicpantsim9.jpg

What we call classic rock was pretty much the peak of musical talent. There's always exceptions, but the rock style music today is just too average and whiney.....not really any GREAT bands that I will ever remember forever.

Some of my favorites to listen to...

Lynyrd Skynyrd

CCR

Rolling Stones

Allman Brothers Band

Steve Miller Band

Doobie Brothers

Bob Segar

Grateful Dead

The Band

Molly Hatchet

That's what I love. It's not like, "Oh here's this great song that we can dance too! I don't know who does it or whatever...but its great! And next week a new song takes it place!"

Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are two of my favourite bands, evar.

Other than that, I have a lot of classic rock in my library as well as a lot of other stuff. It's great, I love a lot of it, there's a lot of fun to be had listening to the swaggering rock songs of the 60's and 70's

Interestingly, my "heaviness" tolerance level is definitely changing. This thread got me thinking about how a year or two ago i'd think The Who was heavy for me, and most of Led Zeppelin's stuff but now they're just lightish rock (although Zeppelin's stuff is definitely more bluesy).

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Simple Man' gets me every time.

Why can't people write that good of music anymore?

I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.

Remember, 'hit song' is not synonymous with 'good song'.

And also, the current climate of our nation is not as..."lovin'"

:( I only wish music this good could be written again.

Classic Rock? What's classic? When's classic? See it is almost like you guys are confining yourself in an era of music, and won't let anything else into it if it wasn't released by 1979. WAKE UP! Thank you. In my opinion here is what is classic-

Joy Division- Ian Curtis and Co. created a whole new genre- post-punk- and inspired The Killers, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, and to a lesser extent- U2.

New Order- After Ian Curtis killed himself, the three remaining members

formed New Order. New Order continued the post punk trend with their debut album, but quickly changed directions and with the help of Blue Monday (the best selling 12" of all time) and Bizarre Love Triangle, became one of the best bands of the 80's and definitively became the best band ever to incorporate dance/electonica into rock.

and the bands that are classic but I dont feel like writing a short summary of-

R.E.M.- The band that carried music from post punk into alternative rock.

Muse (you may flame me for it (keep it nice), but these guys will be remembered later on)

U2

And there you have it.

Hi.

Classic rock is definatly one of my favourite types of music.

I like bands such as Oasis (which is more rock and roll), The Beatles (if you count then as rock), ACDC (which are like classic rock), etc...

Classic rock is the only way to go.

And...thrash metal. But that's beside the point.

I somewhat agree...But Hardcore/ death metal too... and some times punk, the bands u listed are what i usaly listen to daily, latly the Led lepplin, The cream, and brian addams. i cant live with just 1 genres.

Think nostalgic. Franz, Interpol, etc. are still in the market to release albums, while most classic rock bands are not. I guess classic rock defines the bands, music, and style of the 60's and 70's, and maybe early 80's. Things started to change then...
