Did you know 1 molecule can make a big difference?

Im'm sure that you've read about the cheez whiz being 1 molecule away from being plastic?

did you also know that the human body is one molecule away from being hydrogen Peroxide? (I think its peroxide) which is toxic?

Do you know any more?

omg, a lemon!

No, water is one atom away from being hydrogen peroxide, or H202.

Though, I forget how that works out. Can oxygen have an oxidation number of -1?

1 atom in a molecule is right, and 1 atom, from what I know, isn't that little. I think it's something like, corret me if I'm wrong, rolling a dice. A 5 isn't really any closer to a 6 then a 3 is, people just think it is.

I don't think that me taking a can/jar/whatever they pack that in, and adding ONE molecule of something will change it's structure to a plastic. For one, one molecule really won't do anything in a big tub of cheese whiz. 2, cheese whiz does not have it's own molecule, and neither do plastics. They are both compounds. There is no "cheese whiz molecule."

Correct me if I'm wrong, that's just what you'd think.

Theres 37 liters of water in the body, thats 1250 ounces of water. For every 8 ounces of water there are 7.5E24 molecules of water. So in order for your theory to work, you would need 1.17E27 ATOMS of OXYGEN to be added to all the H2O in your body, inorder to make "your body" H2O2, hydrogen peroxide.

That doesn't sound very likely. You would die from the large amounts of oxygen before you even came close. Not to mention the chemistry wouldnt just happen.

Now if you took just one molecule of H2O, your right its only one Oxygen atom away from being H2O2, but its not like this is a spontaneous reaction.

We're one atom away from hydrogen peroxide... per molecule. So in reality, trillions of atoms make a big difference. And we already know that.

Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

Lots of molecular formulas are one atom away from becoming something completely different. Heck, some molecules just need to be mirrored to be something completely different.

Also, there are molecules called "free radicals" that will react with molecules in your body if you inhale them, which doesn't completely transform you but will cause some effect on your health.

Hell yes,

Atom + split = boom.

Pound of radiactive substance + a hell of a lot of splitting = bomb.

Obviously. It's unstable though.

That reminds me. You can also have oxygen with oxidation number of zero.

I think recalling my professor in inorganic chemistry said that some vitamins catch free radicals. (Also i think mostly these free radicals are oxygen atoms.)

well, of cource it depends... just as a 5 is actually closer to a 6 than 3 is on my dice... the 3 is just one the opposite side of the dice :P

ah well... but one atom away in every molecyle, eh well... it does add up, right? :P

On a dice 5 and 3 are equally distant from 6. Pick a number on a dice, and there are 4 equally adjacent to that number and 1 on the opposite side. The opposite sides always add up to 7. So 1 is opposite from 6. 2, 3, 4, 5 are all equally distant from 6.

No. Even if you had that extra atom of Oxygen, you'd still need catalase to convert it from water to hydrogen peroxide, plus the conditions, such as pH, temperature and pressure, to be right for the chemical reaction to take place.

So, no, we're not all one molecule away from being turned into bleach (which is actually one use of Hydrogen Peroxide).

Above all else, we'd die long before we'd get turned into Hydrogen Peroxide anyway, considering it's toxic...

I am shocked that nobody has said anything about Carbon Monoxide, which is one atom of oxygen away from being something we prduce naturally and can breath a little and won;t be affected (CO2) to something that will kill us (CO). And as for the Cheez Whiz thing; i believe it is the same with Splenda.

Yep, in peroxides.

That reminds me. You can also have oxygen with oxidation number of zero.

Yep. When it's part of an oxygen/ozone molecule.
