navyplaya
If I understand what they said on the announcements the other day...: The Texas State Legislature passed a law giving high school seniors and juniors the right to state their opinions to the class on the topic that the teacher is teaching, as long as it is relevant and school appropriate. So basically, if the teacher is giving a lecture on something, you can just stand up and give a speech on your opinions to the class and the teacher can't stop you as long as its relevant and school appropriate. This is an extremely liberal law for a mostly conservative state. But I also think that one of the main reasons they passed this was to give pro-creationists the ability to voice their opinion when evolution is discussed in class, so this law basically makes everyone happy. It's a liberal law, so it makes liberals happy, and I bet the main reason for the law was what I mentioned above, so it makes conservatives happy as well. Your thoughts? UPDATE Alright, I had this more clearly explained to me. Kids who wish to voice their opinion must first sign up in order to do it, I believe either with the teacher, or AP or something. So its not that they can just stand up in the middle of class and state their opinions, they must have it planned out with the teacher, prior to the speech. -All sigs by me.[My Gallery]
sour_tacos
Oh gosh if they had this at my school, we wouldn't get anything done, we'd just have a bunch of idiots trying to be "gangstas" (we have alot of them...) rambling on about crap that's just relevent enough to keep them from getting in trouble. wild_goat_14
Hell no. Please Tennessee, do NOT do this! :ohnoes: :uhh: I shall take my flock underneath my own wing, and kick them right the [bleep] out of the tree. If they were meant to fly, they won't break their necks on the concrete. So, what is 1.111... equal to?10/9. Please don't continue.
Pan_Nx
Lol, we have people in my class that try to do this anyway, thinking they are "cool", teacher always makes them be quite. I wonder how our class would be if they didnt have to be quiet.
Tbfgraphx14
I like that idea. Anytime I have an opinion on a topic in class the teacher yells at me Tbfgraphx14Happy to find I'm not the only one who eats glass.

runescapeloser22
That would be awesome if we had that in our school, but only if it was in effect for a day or two, because then we would never get anything done o_O Anyone here from Texas? Zonorhc
This should already have been a given to begin with. Why do you need a law for students to voice their opinions? Barihawk
I am a Texas native. Your theory is flawed because by Texas Law neither Creationism or Darwinism is taught in public schools. Both are mentioned, but no detail is given. Any evolution is strictly biological adaptation, not man-from-monkey. hellbellz
I'm not sure if I like it or not. The kids can have a relevent opinion to the topic, and making a good discussion, or the kids can have a huge lecture the entire class so they don't have anything done without any of the teachers' objections. Orpheus
Hell no. Please Tennessee, do NOT do this! :ohnoes: :uhh: +1! +1!!!! I agree, knowing we both live in the EXACT same state, just different parts... I would not like some stupid idiot to rant on about how the class is stupid... Lionheart_0
I would not like some stupid idiot to rant on about how the class is stupid... But they can't. The law states it has to be relevant to the class/lesson. Personally this is a good idea and should be put anywhere. But a question: With freedom of speech, isn't it already legal to do this? splatmster24
i honestly applaud them for trying, but i know that it wont work. there are far to many "cool" kids talking already. would love the opportunity to argue creationism with a athiest teachher but i think i can live without. Hi9im8Here7
It's good that this is happening. We're one day closer to removing people like Al Gore from the classroom. :D I also think it's good that students will have some freedom of opinion in public schools instead of getting mindlessly fed propaganda. indy500fan
Personally this is a good idea and should be put anywhere. But a question: With freedom of speech, isn't it already legal to do this? Kids don't have free speech on school grounds. They give up some of their rights as soon as they get onto the property. Same thing goes for private property also, if the owner decides to do it. Movie theaters for example have the right to throw you out if you are talking during a movie. You have free speech outside the theater but not on the theaters property.

And of course they wouldn't teach man from monkey because in the theory of evolution, man didn't evolve from monkeys. Educate your self. Please. It's common practice for students to be able to interrupt the teacher whenever they want in such a way that the teacher has no power to stop them :-s ? That's completely different. No law has been passed to let student's interrupt - no law ever would, that would be chaos. Tigra00
It's not a liberal law at all. It's a conservative law. I'm sure it was passed by mostly conservative politicians because they felt student should be able to stand up in Biology class and state that they believe the world was created by God etc etc etc, not through chance and Evolution. The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me!

Its still an extremely liberal law even though its probably pointed towards conservative thinkers.
