yaff2
If there is one thing that makes me MAD over everything els is when a group of people at a concert, start using the corna with bands that are rock, or slow rock, or anything other than metal for that matter The corna, also known as the Devil horns, metal horns, Was brought to metal by Ronnie James Dio, way before anyone. Back in the old days, the corna was a superstition. If you felt someone was evil, you yould give them the horns, to ware the devil away, or, you could do it to someone, if you felt like giving the "evil eye" you would point the "horns" at them. Ronnie James Dio Brought it to metal! he was the first one to do it infront of a crowed, although Gene Simmons climes he was! This is a lie, James was the first to bring it to metal The "devil horns" are, as you may of guessed... are belived to be associated with evil spirits, the devil, and thing bad spirited. which i imagine why it was brought to metal! I will copy and paste from Wikipedia: Superstition: When confronted with unfortunate events, or just when these are mentioned or suggested, a person wanting to avoid that fate could resort to the corna to ward off bad luck.Such gestures are typically used when a black cat crosses one's path, when seeing a hearse (whether or not it is loaded), or when encountering any situation, object or person believed to bring about bad luck. It was once thought to prevent or distract the effects of the Evil Eye, that is of intentional or directed curses. Historically the gesture was pointed at people suspected of being witches. Definition: The corna (Italian for horns, also mano cornuta, horned hand and fare le corna, to make the horns) is a gesture with a vulgar meaning in Mediterranean countries and a variety of meanings and uses in other cultures. Its origins can be traced to Ancient Greece. It is realized by extending the index and little fingers while holding the middle and ring fingers down with the thumb. The corna is not to be confused as the sign for "I love you" in American Sign Language, which is made by also extending the thumb, or the shaka sign used in Hawaii, which is made by extending just the thumb and little finger. While the "Hook 'em Horns" sign used by fans of University of Texas athletics is the same sign visually, it is used in different context and should not be confused with either. It is identical to the Karana mudra of Eastern religions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corna#Terminology) now, to continue, when you see videos of rock, or slow rock, anything close to that genre, you will see this symbol come up.. Why? i DONT KNOW! the symbol was created (in metal terms) for metal! not rock! I am, as you can tell, a metal head, so maybe this only makes me so mad because i cant stand any other music, i dont know, but the corna, is used for metal, it was introduced in metal, not rock, METAL Why people have to go ruin it, i dont know If anyone knows the song "its all the same" - sick puppies That is a SLOW song, its in no way evil, nor bad, but, of corse, watch the video, and what is there in the crowed, but \m/ the corna! Why? i dont know! but it is, people feel they need to do it i guess, even though they are using it in the wrong genre.. Another thing about this symbol, is when people do it for NO reason, for pictures, or on Webcam, or what ever, just randomly use it because they see it on tv, if they are metal heads or not, they have to use it. Why? i dont know. it makes me mad, The \m/ should be ̢̢̮ââ¬Ã¾Ãââ to Metal music, nothing makes me more mad really, its a symbol for metal, it should stay in metal i dont know why, but people think its the "cool" thing to do, which, brings me to another thing i hate, being your own person, but im not going to get started on that! Peope dont seem to understand that its for metal, its not for rock, or pop, or any other genre, and i know some people will disagree, but all the facts are here, so, dont even bother trying to prove me wrong though i know for a fact people will, and there will be people who agree, for sure, but im going to wrap this up with a Metal is for life \m/ 1980 Berlinetta with a 350, bored, mild cam, intake carb, headers, exhaust

warri0r45
I absolutely agree with you. It's becoming too cliche for me and it's sad because it's such a classically metal symbol. Pop stars doing it make me want to vomit in thier designer jeans and punch them in the nose. I can never not think "what an absolute and utter tool, you couldn't be more of a moronic hack if you tried" whenever I see someone of no relevance to metal doing it. So yes, safe to say it's a pet hate of mine. Horns up \m/ \m/

Mercifull
Hand signals mean different things to different cultures. Showing the palm of your hand in Greece is an offensive gesture equivalent to giving the finger. The OK symbol with your fingers in Brazil and Germany is considered to be a reference to the anus and thus very offensive. It can also used to represent the slang saying "bita vag" which refers to a vagina. The horns are commonly reffered to in texas at the Hook 'em Horns and has nothing to do with the meaning of the Corna horns. It is meant to represent the head and horns of the mascot for The University of Texas at Austin, a Texas longhorn. It's been used since the 1950's long before Ronnie James Dio pupularised it in metal. Someones meaning for using the devil horns doesn't need to match your own ideal, you aren't the ruler of the world and your job isn't to define what hand gestures mean. Lateralus
There's a parody article about this from somewhere, maybe The Onion. It's about how the Metal Council is in distress at the metal horns being used for as small a thing as a celebration when someone starts their lawnmower first time. La lune ne garde aucune rancune. Futurama
Last december I took my girlfriend to see McFly, and a few girls (obviously in the 'just getting into guitarey music' stage) were giving the horns. I've seen it everywhere at gigs, including bands like reel big fish and the automatic. Ooh, satanic...

Thread failure You're right, hand signs will mean different things depending on where you are and no one brand of people owns any hand gesture. Tell me, though, that you don't want to slap any given pop star in the face because they think doing the horns makes them cool, hard or rebellious akin to thier perception of heavy metal being these things. deloriagod
I love how it's so hard for many people to realise things change over time. That sign is no longer just for metal, it's used with a lot of different styles. Don't like that, start something new. But you're just gonna lose it again.. pfilc23
ROFL...I think you're about 25 years late on being bothered by this. It became popular and overused in the early 80's. Plus, as much as it may pain you to hear...it is now often used to make fun of metalheads (mainly, old big hair, butt-rock-style metal).

Intriguing
Meh, I've never liked the symbol myself. It's overused even in the metal scene. In a perfect world, it would only be used if the musician on stage did something insanely awesome, not every time they let out a chugga-chugga riff, but that's just me. But on another side, the fact that so many 13-year-old girls take "myspace" photos of themselves and their freinds doing it probably doesn't help cure my distaste of it. Cool. Barihawk
I think it's fair to warn you: The University of Texas has been using that handsign for more than a hundred years, it was first used at football games in 1896. And it's cow horns. And I hate UT. My heart is broken by the terrible loss I have sustained in my old friends and companions and my poor soldiers. Ragen
I've got no problem with it. Then again, I've only ever seen it done as metal concerts or as a joke from one metal head to another.
