I think it's just a square with a malfunctioning 'lighting'. I get it sometimes too, the square flashes between normal colour (as in disengaged lighting effects) and colour affected by lighting effects if you move the camera around. Due to my epic stats, I have now started WGS (but I still hate spoilers).
