RS Word Censors - Lighten up or tighten down?

Featured Replies

Lots of people don't mind the word censors in runescape while they play right? But what if you get that on the street noob and you say "crap" in that sentence and its censored out and the noob reports you.

Annoying right?

Is Jagex killing the mature group of players to thinking this game is just full of little kids?

When truely the game is becoming full of little kids because of the "GREAT" language censors protecting that little tyke from any bad words.

What are your thoughts? Lighten up on the word censor or keep it the same?

*NOTE: I am NOT saying take it off so people can cuss and use profanity - that is not part of the debate - it's about loosening up so we can actually have a conversation

Being able to say 'bad' words doesn't make you more mature. Jagex is not off putting 'mature' audience with their word censor, they're actually just annoying 12 year olds who can not come up with original insults; but that's okay, 12 year olds love one clicking for everything so they won't leave because of the ease RS presents in terms of game play. That is the true reason RS is full of 'noobs' that love to use the word noob.

Don't care if they change the filter or not, not going to change anything.

Agreed. It's easier to construct a sentence without profanity. Considering for you to type any form of profanity you need your brain to send a message to your hands there is plenty of time to think over what your saying. There is no excuse for "letting it slip" you know the rules and should think about what your saying before you do.

I admit that censoring crap, butt and shoot is a bit silly, as they're generally not officially considered 'swear words' in most cases, and I pity anyone who feels offended by them. But (man I hate conforming to the censor here) r*tard is probably going to be used in an insulting context, so they should probably keep that censored.

I don't see how you can get an offence for getting reported for saying 4 asterisks which may not stand for the swear the person who reported you assumed it to be when you mean somthing else. Really.

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.

Erm... It's annoying how sometimes you can't do some smiley face, or mistype a word. I can't do the emote ' =S ' much at all.

I think they should try to make it more complex.

I dont need a siggy no moar.

what they should do is fix it so that it doesn't interfere with normal words that people type.

i'm guessing most people that want it removed outright want to just curse their brains out.

sad to see that swear-words in sentences are now a form of immaturity, when they used to be something for 'mature audiences'

I think Jagex should lighten up on the word filters so it stops censoring arbitrary words. I'm all for blocking out offensive slurs, insults, and curses, but there are some innocent words that should not be censored.

I've killed over 20,000 dust devils while training to 99 attack and have still not gotten a dragon chain.

Lighten Up for gods sake! If Runescape is supposed to be 13 and up, why are crap and damna dn such censored? If little 8 year olds are offended, GOOD! We don't want them! What 13 year old is offended by half of the words, seriouly.

38% of Tip.Iters put stupid made up statistics in their sigs. If you are one of the 62% that don't, put this in your sig.

Sure, I cuss a little, but I always try to have a clean mouth for the most part. However, there are some people that think that cursing makes them cool. It only makes them look stupid. I mostly use cursing rarely in a friendly conversation.

We should euthanize anyone who lacks the capability to contribute to society in any way.

Please don't elect this man for president in 2012

I'm generally against censoriship, so I just want Jagex to remove it...

But, at the very least they could downgrade their censor so it doesn't block parts of words.

"The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is."

siggy3s.jpg

Jagex certainly need to remove the majority of world from there filter. They game is "designed" for 13 year olds. At 13 most of the words that are blocked are being said at the school yard every day and they arent even offensive. This is from a nother thread but are Jagex forcing up to use bad grammar? They blocked out the ' in "it's". Why? Maybe Mod Andrew knows?

Linking it all together Jagex are trying to "protect" the little tykes that fake their age, when the majority of the audience is in-fact 15 year olds

My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.

They will be used in the wrong context and be classified as profanity. Thus it is better if they remain censored.

You can't even say 'Shaz' in game without it being censored. But i learnt to get over it.

Jagex should let us take it off if we have all security things.

(Little kids probably wont know what to do about the security things)

I say keep the word censor the same and keep adding onto it. I'm not one for profanity and do not appreciate it when others are.

Considering that the RuneScape players have managed to find ways to avoid the censor on about every single word there is, I think we don't deserve to have that freedom - we abused it.

Well the censoring did get silly 8 tenths of the time, like typing libum, "bum" part is censored or fubar "fu" is censored but not "funk"- now say "funk you" lol...

They do need to soften up a little...

Leave them and no its not this thats getting them. It's parents not watching what young 10 yr olds do on the Internet.

keep the sensor as it is.

i'd agree with you there. the last thing the runescape population deserves is a lighter censor. it's only as bad as it is now because they have to go block every possible variation of the words, regardless of whether or not it is a normal, non-curse word. we really brought it on ourselves in that sense, and even if it's just a few, they ruined it for everyone

For the most part I like the censor. Very rarely do I get any asterisks popping up when I don't put them in myself. The only thing I don't like is when it blocks out 'eh?'.

Personally what I would like to see happen is a way of turning the filter off/down on the main site based on your individual account. So JagEx can keep their super strict filter for the kiddies, but for older players they can have a converstation with out worrying about giving out things like site names email/instant messaging and things like that. I have seen this work very well on other games and web sites, and I think it would work well for RS as well.

I wouldn't be opposed to this, except they would need a better way to determine your age. And only if you were above a certain age could you tone it down. However, I would leave it up pretty high for the most part, anyway.

I dont think there really is a better way to determine your age, and anything they could put in place could easily be faked. They would simply warn you about turning down the filter, state that any site you went to or any language you were offended by was not their fault when you agreed to turn it down, and then when you whine about it they point out you had fair warning.
