Triforceelf
I have a secreet for you: almost any add on the internets contains some sort of spyware or cookie in it. I wouldnt say all of course, but a hell of alot of them. Some are malicious, others are not. Run frequent through virus scans to destroy any you do pick up. aznmidget448
I personally use firefox while playing and it contains a feature that pretty much just deletes the ads. It is very useful and I love it But if you are not so lucky, don't click their ads. They only post these ads to support their own company and make money. What I would suggest is just clicking the restore button and then align it so you do not see the ads. This will not only prevent "accidental clicks", but it will also free up some RAM on your computer, consequentially allowing your computer to perform faster and more efficiently, aka less lag. Just for the record though I did not click an ad, it used a browser exploit and opened that page on it's own. fgfuyfyuiuy0
If you're really worried about keyloggers or other trojans/viruses, do the smart thing and switch to Linux :P What people need to understand is that there aren't as many viruses/trojans for Linux because there is a small percentage of people who use it. If you made an Ad, that when executed, installed a trojan on a system, which Operating System would you attack? Linux? Probably not. You'd probably go for Windows based Operating Systems. The simple fact of the matter is, way more than half of the world's computer owners use a Windows based Operating System. Simple fact. Now, programmers attack the most used Operating System. So, if more people switched to Linux and surpassed the population, who uses Windows, most programmers would then attack Linux, causing it to be the "Most-attacked-virus/trojan-based Operating System". Simple fact. Now, I'm not saying not to switch to Linux. I am just saying that it can easily be fixed with more viruses than Windows. It's just strategy. You'll get more suckers with Windows based viruses than you will with Linux based ones. OT: Sucks about the malicious Ad. I don't think it is against the rules to have your FireFox Ad-Blocker program on. I've had it on, so when I switch over to F2P to merchant, it doesn't refresh every 10 seconds with a new add and I accidentally hit the backspace button. I <3 Gears of War 2. Rcty
I really don't get how they let this happen - You would think that they would check all ads and have them in a secluded, un-accessable location. Also, they spelled "encripted" wrong, it should be "encrypted". (Already mentioned, I know.) I can guarantee you that no legit virus scanner would do that, or really make scans from an Internet webpage. You typically have to install a program. ~Rcty Rcty
jscinoz
fgfuyfyuiuy0, I'll agree that its smaller market share is a contributing factor to the near non-existence of Linux viruses, but also the very nature of the operating system inhibits virus damage and propagation, you'd have to specifically execute a virus as root, and enter your password for it to do any real damage. Makoto_the_Phoenix
Off-topic: fgfuyfyuiuy0, here's the drill. There are less Linux-based viruses not only because of the smaller market share, but because it is easily fifty to one hundred times more difficult to propagate them, or get them to really infect. Also, since Linux doesn't let any single user have true Administrative powers, the damage done to the OS is limited to that user account. Files, programs, and the like aren't affected since they'd have the same permissions as the user that ran them anyway. (That means, if I can't access a file in /dev or in /etc, then I can't do harm to it as a normal user.) Since I'm an avid Linux user, have been for about four years now, let me condense an overview that would take literally an hour to tell someone else into maybe a half a paragraph. With Windows, you have to be an admin to do literally half of the things you would do on a daily basis. With Linux, you aren't an admin to do 95% of the things you would do on a daily basis. The 5% includes patches, updates to programs, installing/uninstalling features, and changing system-wide settings, such as the clock. In Linux, being an administrator means you're only there for a second. In Windows, being an administrator means you're probably one right now. That's why Windows is so vulnerable -- admins aren't restricted to what they can run on their machine. [if you want to learn more about this, please - feel free to PM me. I like to share this kind of knowledge.] On-topic: I saw the ad today. If anything, it's only a scare tactic, and if your machine is secure then you shouldn't run into any problems. Send those screenshots into Jagex anyway; this sort of thing would give a novice user a heart attack. dolomite129
Well, Jagex get's paid by the ad companies to display their ads on RuneScape's site and client. Jagex doesn't have control over what ads come up, the ad company decides that. So it's probably not on Jagex's end, but either way, just stick to the internet version. That's why I like RuneScape, it's run from your browser and it absolutely CANNOT give you a virus of any kind. (Java applets aren't permitted to. :P) It's dolomite, baby!Dark matter - Each pound of which weighs over ten thousand pounds.
