What Brick & What Window?

I'm sure by now many of you would have heard of the following story:

"Cambridge, UK - A 14-year-old teen was arrested in Cambridge on Tuesday morning for throwing several bricks through office windows. The teen, who was not identified by police, was charged for property destruction and will be due to appear in court on December 14th. According to police, the office belonged to Jagex Ltd., a company that specializes in Java computer games"

Its been posted on the Jagex forums and on fan sites and guild sites and been mentioned in game by anyone with a passing interest in the way things are at the moment. Its a wonderful story for all those who are frustrated with the recent changes, showing someone taking the sort of action that they would love to take themselves due to their anger at the updates.

Only slight problem with it - it didn't happen.

Or at least if it did the source of the story is incredibly elusive.

I've checked the cambridge media (Cambridge Evening News, BBC Cambridge sites, local uni paper, all the local radio station sites, even a couple of free papers like the town crier) and found nothing relating even slightly to this story.

Cambridge is a small town, from the looks of it nothing ever really happens around there. I think a story like this would actually make the news as at least a passing mention.

"Major MMO Company Gets Brice Through Window!!"

Nope

"Fans Show Disgust At Game Changes"

Not a thing

nada, nothing, zip all.

Only people reporting it are RuneScape fans.

Specifically the ones peved off with the updates.

And the reported facts?

'Property destruction' isn't a crime in the UK, its called 'criminal damage'. So the wordings wrong unless its a US reporter (who picked up on a story even the local news missed)

4 days to go to court in the UK for juvenile criminal damage? yeah right! Takes a month *AT BEST* for someone that young to go to court over something that minor in the UK. He put a brick through a window, he didn't kill anyone. UK courts don't work that fast.

"was not identified by the police" - more like can't be, and something that is always stated as such by the uk media. might have been an off day

So we have

*no proven source

*no findable source

*incorrect wording of the crime and curious wording as to not being able to ID the kid

*The fastest court proceedings for a bricking in which noone was hurt in UK history

Sorry, but unless someone can find a decent credible source on this one I think we can safely call it a myth 8-)

EDIT: plus the person who wrote it says its fake http://forum.tip.it/viewtopic.php?t=723801

And I should have searched here rather than on google #-o

Oh em gee I already knew it was fake after the creator of the "article" mentioned it was fake.

Well erm have fun while looking for actual evidence of this story which never happend

I hadn't seen that bit... Yes, I do feel very silly now

Then again the amount of people calling it true was just driving me mental so I guess those 20 minutes were worth it (kinda)

If nothing else I now know how incredibly dull a place cambridge is

I think you proved you intelligence when you said "Cambridge seems like a small town"

Yeah one of the major cities in uk noted for having one of the top two universities in the uk and top 5 in the world at which many notable buisness men, sports stars and writers have studied, clearly a small place

Its about 5 miles by 4 miles across and has a population of about 110k, that isn't that big either in size or people by UK standards. yes it has a university, but that doesn't make the place itself interesting or have anything exciting going on.

happily agree that I mucked it by not knowing the guy who had started the rumour had posted up calling it nonsense but still very happy that the place is both small and uneventful (but with a couple of universities which people of note have come from)

That's about the size of a medium sized family in some countries.

It is small, it's tiny. It's one of the 'nicest' places in england by far, i went there once and it was like a film, everybody from the local schools had little hats on and stuff, and people were taking boat rides.

In leicester people just fight a lot really.

Ya well look at Yale in New Haven Coneticate. Aside from the university which is resonably safe (less so at night), the entire town would seem to be composed of all the criminals who would live in the bronx (of New York) if there were more space (New Haven being about 2 hours from New York).

Just to be clear when i define a town as big or small I do not just account for size.

It's to do with what it has there and status.

I mean "a small town where nothing happens" makes Cambridge sound rubbish

It's a small city with a huge reputation and alot of amazing things.

Why on earth are you all discussing Cambridge? can't we all just agree that Cambridge isn't what everyone thinks and it dependsd on point of view, and that the story was fake?

Jeez tipiters can make an arguement out of anything...

[hide=]

tip it would pay me $500.00 to keep my clothes ON :(
But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

Apparently a lot of people say it. I own.

it was hardly an "arguement"

It was a polite discussion that is relivant to the thread as it mentions Cambridge. I don't know whether you've had a conversation or discussion in real life, but general when the main aim (in this case the story)is resolved (eg provedfake) it wanders onto a close topic (in this case cambridge).

To be fair to people who believed this: Only on the internet will people praise someone for (lying) and making up a story and mock people for believing it.

On Cambridge: Its very small, it a lovely place (not as nice as Oxford) and everyone is posh. It could be described as idyllic.

Leicester - England's duel arena...

Cambridge is nice but its got it's bad spots like most places.

Point of fact:

Leicester is also a city, NOT a county. It is the county seat of Leicestershire, not Cambridgeshire ;)

Yes, they are somewhat close, but that's like me going to the States and them all asking me if I know the Queen personally. :wall:

All places have "good" and "bad" parts to them, it just so happens that the UK is smaller than quite a few American states, so they're all cramped together a lot closer than they would be in other parts of the world.

Of those who say nothing, few are silent -=Thomas Neil =-
