Your Phobias

I didn't seem to find a topic like this, and certainly not an active one, so I decided to make one.

I seem to have to tell my parents and friends near every day that I have Lilapsophobia (fear of tornados and hurricanes), and it's quite severe. Every time I hear thunder, I flip between news channels and the weather channel to check the radar and warnings, if I'm online and not busy, I'll check a few sites, and I'll always keep an eye on the clouds for any sign of rotation or any increase in severity and closeness of lightning strikes, especially since I live in Florida and storms come often here. (Story about a girl with it, not as bad as me, but still http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=547011)

I also have:

~aviophobia (fear of flying...or rather fear of crashing in my case, although I don't mind helicopters for some reason). I've lost some vacation opportunities because of this.

~Altophobia, but not really. It's not so much being high, as fear of the structure collapsing, such as at amusement parks, I check for bracing and if anything is leaking (water parks) or rattling badly, and how long the ride has been there. I will ask about the most recent repairs done on it too if I can get the information.

~Arachnophobia - Fear of Spiders...I'm getting over it, I can at least kill most of them by myself now, but if one were to crawl on me...*shudders*. To get an idea of how bad I was, even if a little one, or a baby one (no bigger than a dime) were to even crawl in my line of sight, I would run screaming and get someone else to kill it....and I still can't look at pictures of them, if in a magazine, i won't even look at the page, or touch where the spider was, as if it would come out and eat me... :ohnoes:

If you want, you could take a look at http://phobialist.com/, a great website I found awhile ago (I have all mine memorized, but there's something like 14 pages worth of phobias). Some are quite funny (arachibutyrophobia (I think that's how it's spelled anyways), which is the fear of peanut butter getting stuck to the roof of your mouth). Just hit Ctrl+F and type in something to find the name for it. You don't have to give an official name though.

If you are going to name them from phobialist or somewhere else, please give a description (copy and paste if you have to).

I have the same instance of arachnophobia as you. Freaky they are! Im actually pretty much scared of a lot of bugs and stuff, even frogs when i have to take it out of the skimmer basket of my pool i'll make my brother do it.

Im also scared of the plane crashing and such but not hugely, i wont refuse to fly or anything.

Coulrophobia, Pediophobia, Pupaphobia, and Venustraphobia

Venustraphobia, really? I think people really had that...just seems weird and unjustified..but then again, Arachibutyrophobia is the same way (and I know quite a few people who have it)...Interesting...This should be a fun (but maybe short-lived) thread.

Also, if you do copy from phobia list, give a short description (the ones they post on there are fine), so we don't have to go searching. Just makes life easier.

JeremyM - I'm not afraid of other animals/insects, save maybe cockroaches, but I'm not really afraid of them, I just hate them.

Errdoth - feel free to come up with one.

pyromancer - I put that in my first post after fgf's post. His were Clowns, Dolls, Puppets, and Beautiful Women. I would just classify your fear as hemophobia (fear a blood). Dealing with it is sicker than thinking about it <.< =;

timmay929 - hatred =/= fear.

That something, somewhere, is watching me, studying my every move, my every thought. Especially strong when I'm around ducks...have you ever seen the little buggers? The way they stare....creepy. Other than that, nothing I can think of.

Heh. Lenin scared of ducks. Never thought he would have a weakness...

I have way too many fears, and some of them are quite abnormal so I doubt there are official terms for them. And I can't be bothered to check up official names, and I don't want to make people look up what I'm afraid of...So...

-Fear of death. Some people say it's irrational, some people find it perfectly normal. Most of my fears come down to the fear to death, so I'd say it's my biggest fear.

-Fear of bugs. In general. Just can't stand them.

-Fear of fire. Not a pyromaniac...

-Fear of vehicular accidents. Car crashes, hijacked airplanes, train bombings, crashes in general.

-Fear of heights/falling. I remember reading something about it actually being the fear of falling that most people have, rather than the fear of heights. I don't really know which one I have, maybe both.

-Fear of sickness/disease. Need I explain?

-Fear of dogs. One of the weirdest ones I have... :?

-Fear of glitter. I've gotten over it a bit, and I guess it's more of a hate. :|

-Fear of loss. Of anything, anyone...

...And the list goes on. I'm pretty paranoid...

Triskaphobia. Fear of the number three. To call it "fear" would be an overstatement though; I just don't like the number at all. I basically do a (small) mental shudder when I see it.

Kinda sucks though, since it's basically the perfect number. Two is usually too little; four is usually too much.

As I've been forced to explain to several hundred people already, it's not the ducks themselves. Like a duck with no eyes, I can handle, and it's not like I'll scream like a little girl if one approaches me. I just feel very uneasy because of those piercing eyes....

Really Lenin? Because just a few hours ago I saw a duck outside and wanted to grab him and call him my own ducky. I love ducks, especially the cute little baby ducks...*quack quack quack*. How can you hate they eyes of a duck? They aren't piercing, ducks are happy creatures (especially the small red-headed ones).

penguin is in the lead for most paranoid person on TIF so far, lol. Although I don't get how someone fears glitter...

I'm the exact opposite of you, I looooooooooooove storms. We go amateur storm-chasing.

I'm a bit of a homophobe, and a little scared of most engines. Dunno the word for it.

And Lenin, I guess the base for the rebellion against you will be in the Peabody, in Memphis.

Oh yeah, of course fear of zombies. I'm not too horribly scared of anything else. Well, maybe electricity, like power surges.

I seem to have to tell my parents and friends near every day that I have Lilapsophobia (fear of tornados and hurricanes

You, sir, should not visit Iowa nor spend long periods of time with me. When I see those dark (almost black) clouds rolling in, those crazy gusts of wind picking up, and the rain/hail pouring down so hard it hurts.. I open up the doors and keep my eyes peeled for that amazing sight. I've managed to catch glimses of funnel clouds and a tornado beginning to drop but, unfortunately, never a tornado in destruction mode :(

On topid:

I have my little fears, but I don't really have any phobias. I'm basically scared of:

-Some bugs: Mostly things with stingers, venom, or a 8+ legs.

-Hieghts: I can handle them, I just don't enjoy it -but I do love to fly.

-What's hiding in the dark: Don't get me wrong, I love the dark but when I'm sitting there alone my imagination tends to get the best of me. Imagine looking over every inch of your room trying to find a place to hide your stash, then imagine the weirdest/scariest things you've ever seen. Now imagine that scary [cabbage] hiding in all those places you've discovered..

-Getting caught w/ weed: Been caught once so I can't do it for quite a while. But when I start again, no idiots will be allowed anywhere near my stuff.

-Death by suffocation: I would go out of my mind before I would die.. I just wouldn't be able to handle that. When I die I want it to be quick.

-The things I see out of the corner of my eye: The guy standing in my brother's room, or the dog that was hiding behind a door, the guy watching me from the top of the stairs.. Of course, I only see them in my house.. Scares the [cabbage] out of me sometimes.

I don't know if it's a phobia, but I do have a fear of doing things that might embarrass myself or end with me failing.

This has held me back from doing things that looking back on I probably should have.

You should spend February-September in the Texas Panhandle, in the area of Amarillo if you don't want to stay in one of the tiny towns. Storms are often an everyday occurrence, and tornadoes are completely common. At my old home, we were hit by a small one, hardly any damage.

Heh, my parents told me as a kid not to kill spiders, because it brings bad luck. I never was really superstitious but the habit stayed, I just let them be. And it's not like the smaller variety of spiders can hurt you..

Anyways, I don't think I'm scared of anything. I try to be as rational as possible and discard mythological/non-fact based beliefs swiftly.

But... Sometimes I just grow paranoid and think I'm cursed by some outside force. Especially in competitive situations of any kind (like card games, picking numbers, or anything involving money/odds), the worst possible outcome keeps happening to me year after year. Multiple times. I try to tell myself it's just a statistical distortion and will fix itself in the long run.. But it just keeps happening :?

God forbid I bid on sports.. Just during the European championships, I made 4 bets on the better team & they suddenly lose.. Made a single bet on a tight game to have less than 5 goals.. You guessed right,, on the '93rd minute it gets the 5th goal. Heck, I bet on Boston Red Sox to win over Cincinnati (which was at the time the worst team in the entire league) and Sox lost by like 10 runs. My thoughts were just pure 'what the heck'

Haha I'm no stranger to rambling. I would honestly love to go spend some time down there during tornado season for a while. Maybe once I'm out of college I'll save up then take some time off work and head down there ;)

To Lenticular_J: I'm deathly scared of storms and getting hit by a tornado, but for some odd reason, I would love to go storm chasing. Just because I'm afraid doesn't mean I don't like looking at them. I love to watch shows like on the weather channel, because they're so powerful, and they look neat, but if I heard of one was coming for my house, I would lose it....unless the TIV (Tornado Intercept Vehicle, from Discovery Stormchasesrs google it) was available, then maybe I would let it come without fear.

Boo homophobia *waits in a dark part of the thread to scare you*

Also, forget Texas and Iowa. Oaklahoma is the tornado capital of the states/north america/world (can't remember which).

I've seen a tornado destroy a house down the street...it was small, but I made a fort out of my bed. My uncle also had one come and shoot rocks at 2 of his vehicles, and tear out some trees...thankfully neither the house, him and his wife and my cousin, nor the horses were harmed.

To Alex and Abyssal, get the hell off of my thread with your spam.

superson, your fear is Atychiphobia, the fear of failure, and Agoraphobia, which is fear of embarrassment, or being in crowded, public places/leaving a safe place.

Dizzle is close to me in fears, save chlaustrophobia.

I just remembered something funny too - my friend's father is a pilot, but he is afrad of heights...I've been trying to figure out how that works...

Nah, I'm not that scared of gays. Just the really manly, are you going to kick my [wagon] lesbians; and gay guys who want to hit on me. That's just too wierd. I also hate situations that are little overly gay. :s

Oklahoma just gets hit harder. Most of our tornadoes hit empty fields, and go up before long. It's good that you'd like to face your fear by storm-chasing, by the way.

I think I have agoraphobia and cynophobia (or whatever "fear of dogs" would be-- can't be bothered checking).

My cynophobia can be problematic. If I see an unsupervised dog, I'll immediately walk the opposite direction (or at least try to avoid it when absolutely necessary) regardless of where I was supposed to be going. Another problem is that dogs (usually the larger ones) sometimes smell my fear and as a result they begin to follow/chase me. I've been chased by dogs on numerous occasions... it's actually kind of funny when I think about it, but to me the experience can be very frightening.
