I don't think that they should be banned, as they have not really done anything wrong (except make a few spam threads). Now I'm not saying they arn't annoying, and that having to scowl the internet for a translater isn't frustrating, but they still havn't done much to get them banned IMHO. Stealing threads just gives us another topic to discuss, making us think the opposite of what we had in the previous thread. They are helping our OT forum, just they are a bit annoying. I say mods should hand out more bans. Come on, if we give JB/TheChamp anymore lenience they'll abuse it, I say ban them now to avoid any further conflicts with them. EDIT: And the mods have to babysit those two, just look at the "what are your flaws thread" Lion had rewrite the entire thread. Well, people like Shadowfax and Bubsa, their positive contributions to OT outweigh the things they said that got them them banned. But people like Jb and TheChamp, have not contributed one positive to Tipit, and should be banned, regular trolls, they are. I disagree completely. If what they did was so bad that they were permanently banned (as opposed to a temporary ban), then they shouldn't allowed back. It's as simple as. Even Bubsa himself recognised that his contributions to the forums shouldn't make him an exceptional case. I've actually checked his profile. It says he's logged on since the forum rollback, but he hasn't posted anything. Full respect to the guy for taking responsibility for his actions. The fact is you cannot ban someone for making threads you aren't personally interested in. For two reasons: A) You can just *shock* avoid the thread; and B) If we did, Tip.It would become a community of about 1,000 active users with the same, or similar, personalities. That doesn't make for a vibrant healthy and diverse community at all. It just increases hostility towards those who are different. I don't actually mind the more shallow, chitty-chatty threads. If half of this board is going to become full of political threads where flaming is naturally higher, your average person seriously isn't going to be interested. As for grammar and spelling, all it requires is a polite notice in a reply to ask them to improve or at least put it through some sort of spell-checker, not backseat moderating, flames, petty insults and requests for such people to be banned. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
Turtlefemm
While there are always going to be annoying posters, and people who spam, flame, break rules in all areas of the forum, overall Offtopic HAS become a much nicer forum. It is sometimes human nature to pick out only the worst of something, and I'm sure we could pick through any forum and make statements that the forums suck because of those things. There will never be perfection. It doesn't exist. I personally have found many interesting topics and posts and discussions here that were difficult to find or not there at all before project offtopic got underway. Perfect spelling is not a requirement on our forums. Coherency... that is sometimes an issue, and it is interesting how the very people who complain about it, bash and slam the ones who are struggling to make themselves understood. I find it much more unacceptable when I see a member of our forums insulting someone for his imperfect grammar and spelling. Many folks are using English as a second or even third language. Many others are still learning how to speak via typing. There is no reason to make them feel bad when they try to communicate. It is possible to ask someone to try to type more clearly without being nasty and hateful about it. ~Turtle No one needs to get their ass on their shoulders about this--the_tallest1"Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see."-- Arthur SchopenhauerMy deviantart gallery --- Turtlequirks Zazzle

Though remembered by many people. :| Anyway, just saying, I'm pretty sure I remember there being mass un-bannings before. Meaning the admins gave second chances to a lot of people. Why not give second chances to people that were banned before the rollback as well? (It depends on why people were un-banned before, I guess. I don't know if it was a technical reason or if the admins just felt like it) And Turtlefemm...While I agree that perfect English is not needed, and that there have been a lot of people who have English as a second/third/fourth/etc. language (I guess you could say I'm one of them...), I'm 90% sure that these guys are purposely typing like idiots. Ginger_Warrior
I'm 90% sure that these guys are purposely typing like idiots. This is EXACTLY what I mean. Before I go on, I realise this is an announcement and my staff rank may be seen as an official Tip.It view. I want to say that is definitely NOT the case, and this is my personal opinion. But so what if they are? I agree with you when you say it's horrible to read. I too usually type in full prose, even on an IM service. It just seems natural to me. However, you have to realise most people don't attempt to write in perfect grammar while they're on the Internet. txt-speak has, whether you like it or not, become the social norm in how people communicate using the written word, and I'm not going to sit on my high horse and criticise others because they've missed out capital letters or punctuation when it's actually me in the minority who write in perfect grammar. All I ask is they attempt to put enough grammar to make the thread readable, and if people do genuinely have trouble reading what they're saying, that they go back and rewrite it instead of relying on a mod to clear up the mess, or replying with flames. If anything, I've found talking in txt-speak is actually more relaxing, which reduces tension, although obviously I'd still prefer to read good English. We've got to make Forum.Tip.It a generally more welcoming experience though, and flaming others for not using grammar is just a show of needless hostility, and could possibly even cause personal offence if the person in question suffers from dyslexia, or another learning disability. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
